DuroMax XP12000EH start up test. Will it start my 3 ton AC...and power rest of house???

This was the biggest generator I was planning to buy (Also the biggest portable that supports propane). And could only hope it would work to start my central AC, and it did! It probably helps that my AC unit is only a year old. New AC units are more efficient on startup.
All ready for hurricane season 2020!
DuroMax Portable Dual Fuel Generator - 12,000 Surge Watts, 9500 Rated Watts, Electric Start, CARB Compliant, Model# XP12000EH
Surge Protector Shown is Eton CHSPT2ULTRA

Reliance CAT. NO. PB50, 50 Amps 125/250V AC, Type 3R enclosure.
Conntek 1450SS2-15 50 Amp Temp Power Generator Cord, 15 Feet, Black
The cost of installation was about $1000. The cost of the the surge protector was about $475. So my total cost of installation was just under $1500.

People like this is why I have such a massive respect for people that provide a service. I don't have the bandwidth to deal with people with no common sense. I am a little concerned that he didn't know that Generator is more than big enough to supply that entire house with no problem. And if it did load the Generator a soft start kit would handle that much cheaper than a windows unit.

Word of advice from an AC tech. Try turning your thermostat to OFF and turn on the indoor fan to FAN ON first. Let the generator get used to that load from the indoor fan, then turn the thermostat to COOL. Fan motors and compressors take a lot of amperage to start. You have a fan inside, fan outside, and compressor outside. Allowing the indoor fan to pull its extra amperage on start up and then turn on the outdoor fan and compressor will spread out that initial high amperage draw. - great video though! Considering getting the same generator for my house. How do you like it so far?
@HeyJudeTampa
@HeyJudeTampa 4 года назад
Thanks, that is great advice, makes a lot of sense. I will make a note of it in my startup steps!
@billw1044
@billw1044 4 года назад
That sounds great but then what do you do once the AC is running and now relying on the thermostat for its normal on/off operation? Unless you plan to pull a chair up next to your thermostat and manually control it 24/7, what's the point. Are you suggesting leaving the air handler fan running all the time? If you are going to all this trouble and expense, why not just get a generator that can handle the load.
@philipmorris6782
@philipmorris6782 4 года назад
Bill W the answer to your question is partially within my initial comment. Set the fan to FAN ON. Leave the indoor fan running constantly. The thermostat will cycle the compressor and outdoor fan on/off as needed. Every bit of amperage draw that can be avoided is worth it so leaving the fan on instead of start/stopping will make a big difference. Your second question, why not get a generator that can handle it. Answer, the cost difference between this generator in the video and the next step up (a stand by large kw auto transfer switch system) is MASSIVE. For instance a friend of mine owns his own small electrical company. He works with a generac rep and installs stand by 22kw generacs with auto transfer switches and auto run schedules for weekly exercise. That set up I just described costs around $10,000 and drinks about 2 gallons of gas per hr unless you use propane or natural gas. Versus the set up shown in this video can be done for $2,000-3,000 but you have to do small adjustments to make the amp draw on the generator manageable.
@HeyJudeTampa
@HeyJudeTampa 4 года назад
@@billw1044 Yep you got it. For me going to keep the thermostat low enough so the AC will not stop. In FL hot weather that is AC usually runs non stop through summer. Another thing to note. This is the Biggest generator portable generator I can find that runs on propane. The next size up would a Generac, twice the cost and only runs on gasoline. Gasoline can become hard to get when a hurricane is coming.

@guyfroml

First, thanks for the very informative video. Okay, I purcahsed the Duromax XP13000EH, which I run/will run on propane during a power outage. I hired an electrician to install a transfer switch. Like you, I have a 3 ton central unit for a home just shy of 1,300 s.f. of interior living area. Once everything was installed, we did a test. I had already turned off the central A/C system. We started the generator and it was running at full proper capacity. I first turn on the fan. It was easy to hear the generator feel that added load. After a minute of running the fan I then started the AC compressor. You could immediately hear the generator stressing. The air current coming out of the vents was no more than half the normal blow. You could easily tell both the generator and central AC system were straining to run. My electrician said it was not good for the generator nor the AC system to run like this. Plus, he explained I would be burning a tremendous amount of propane. He estimated a gallon per hour. Here's what he suggested and I took him up on it. I already had a 5,000 BTU window unit that still worked great from a few years back when my central AC system died. I acquired another one off Craigs List that worked perfectly PLUS purchased a 12,000 BTU windwo unit to be used in the main living room. This would keep cool most of the house, especially in the areas we frequent. I can keep them stored in my workshop which is climate controlled. I ran a test running with all three units running and it presented no load issues for the generator. The generator ran strong. Even though I had to put out a few more dollars to acquire the additional AC window units and a few 100 lb propane tanks (since I don't have natural gas where I live, buying this particular generator was the way to go. My total investment for everything, including hiring the electrician and a small shed I purchased to house everything next to the house, was less than $5K. Going with a Generac whole house with a huge propane tank installed (250-300 gallon) would have run me no less than $14K for everything. Also, my electrician estimates with the window units and running only what I need I should cut the propane use down to about 14-16 gallon a day compared to trying to run the central AC system and burning 24 gallons per day.

The Duramax manual recommends against useing the economy mode while plugged into a home - From Duromax - The automatic idle control feature is mainly used for jobsites to help lower the RPM and conserve fuel while the generator isn't drawing a load, and once a load is demanded the generator will return to the normal RPM and fuel consumption rate. Please note we don't recommend using the idle control feature with direct home connections due to low wattage appliances with constant power needs. It does have a break-in period From Duromax - During the first 6 to 8 hours of use with our generators we recommend using conventional oil and keeping the generator load under 50% of its rated capacity to assist with the break in period; then after the break in period is complete, we'd recommend changing the oil with either synthetic or conventional oil. If necessary the load break in requirement can be disregarded in an emergency situation. And you would benefit from a soft start kit for your AC (like others mentioned).

I appreciate this video. We live at the opposite corner of the country and snow is the main cause of our outages, but the result is the same. We have a strange electrical set-up, with the well (we’re deep in the Pacific Northwest woods) on a completely different circuit from the house. That required two generators and I got the XP5500HP for the well and the XP1300EH for the house. Got the smaller one a while back and the larger is being delivered next week, coinciding with the electrician coming out to set things up for both circuits. (I don’t know if circuit is the right term, but you get the point.) So finding your video was fortunate. I’ll bookmark this for reference. Stay cool.

I think that have to be our set up also. We have a separate panel box outside for water well, aerobic septic and pool equipment. So I think we would need to get 2 medium sized generators. Still it would be 1/3 of the price of a whole home generator.

Good information spoken here. I would ask the tech to put power shedding devices on that monitors the hot water heater and the air conditioning these devices shed or share the power. You put a priority on the what needs power and when. When the guy installed my 20 KWH Generac I asked him if I needed a surge protector he said no you don't need one. Something killed my magnetos, took out the control board and he had to order some of these parts so if something would have happened we would be without power. Run the A/C because in Florida in the summer its miserably hot. Glad to see you were able to get your A/C running. And I appreciate you asking all the questions you did. I had those same questions and finally feel comfortable with the setup after watching this video. My only questions for you are whether you've tried running the AC with gas vs. propane (I've heard that gas gives you a higher wattage that should be able to handle the larger draw from the AC), how long you're getting the generator to run on a 20lb propane tank, and if you've gotten the tank freezing up.

If you install a soft start on the compressor it will start up lot easier no need a large generator. They make SoftStarthome version up to 6 tons. Softstart is different than a hardstart cap which only shortens the time to start the compressor by adding a short jolt of voltage. Softstart ramps up the voltage slowly to get the compressor going also helps with keeping the windings cooler.

Nice! Look at the videos I posted of my Champion 8000. I have since added a natural gas regulator and can now run it off the gas meter, gasoline or propane. This means I'll have power indefinitely. For propane I would get at least 5 tanks. I wouldn't even mess with gasoline unless it's a last resort. You may want to get a hard start kit for your AC, it will start better. In all honesty you don't need to turn every breaker off, just those that will bog it down like the AC and fridge. Don't switch it to the generator till it's been allowed to run for about a minute though.

Well they made one huge mistake and that's to never plug the cord into the generator with it running. This energizes the open house end of the cord with 220V and if touched will electrocute you. Proper sequence is to turn off main, plug cord into both gen and house then start gen. Turn on gen breaker and begin switching on loads with the highest such as AC first followed by remaining breakers.

I'm not five minutes in to this video and I already noticed some mistakes. At 3:00 in to the video about the Teflon tape. You don't use Teflon tape on any connection that has a flared fitting. Also, you're supposed to use the primer button on the propane regulator when you're starting the generator on propane.
@MIARACING

I laughed about the Teflon part too as a plumber. And I have the same unit and noticed not all of them have the primer on the regulator. I believe they’re newer unit doesn’t have it. The older did and it have them a problem if I remember correctly t

@@HeyJudeTampa We just tried starting our new Duromax 10000 this morning, first attempt and new propane tank. Followed instr. in manual and our's would not start either...sounded like your's. Manual said "open choke all the way".... when the electrician came to put in elect. box, he went over and started it immediately and informed us he comes across this all the time, the Duromax requires a "half choke" then immed. turn it back off after it starts..it worked perfectly.. the manual is wrong. Informative video! I wasn't familiar with DuroMax before this. Also am interested in the tri-fuel conversion to also allow natural gas. Would be convenient in cases (like we seem to have in the Northeast a lot) where the electricity is off, but gas is still on.
@HeyJudeTampa
@HeyJudeTampa 4 года назад
Hey Bill, good to hear from you! Yeah that would be my first choice, natural gas. However we do not have natural gas service in our area so propane is the only option but a good one. Yes I have seen other videos on RU-vid which show this generator with natural gas conversion. So it is very possible.
@prestonthomas9406
@prestonthomas9406 2 года назад
I have the same generator here in Texas and to run natural gas you do have to have a fairly large hose (1-1/4 x 100’, $600 for gas rated quick dis-connect fittings and hose) at least here with the low pressure. Maybe in your area you may have higher pressures. I also broke the engine in by running gasoline in it for 5 hours (it’s in the manual to use gas first).

I run my 3-ton AC off of a 8,000 watt continuous so that 12,000 should have absolutely no problem my 3-ton in particular only draws 15.4 amps (after its running) on each leg plus the blower motor, micro air makes a soft start for under $500 that will cut the start amperage of your AC in half their design for RV to be able to run AC on a extension cord and they do a good job just something you might want to think about this year I will be getting a bigger generator but I don't see why running the 3 ton AC along with everything else would be a problem especially if you had a soft start installed

Good video. 18:36 Please listen to this advice, don't let the hot exhaust air hit the grass as it will kill it and leave you with a brown spot. I always use an extra piece of plywood to protect my lawn. I have the same generator and wish I could install a 50 amp interlock kit like yours, but my breaker-box is much older and requires me upgrade the entire box. So I ended up installing a automatic transfer switch to my meter rated at 30 amp . This Generator also runs my AC and entire house. I have owned this generator for 3 years here are some tips: -Get a digital hour running meter installed (They are cheap and easy to install) This helps you keep track of how long you have run this generator -Remember to change your oil on this generator at a minimum once every year or 50 hours of use (which ever comes 1st) -If you use Gasoline, always use stabilizer in your fuel and run the carburetor dry by shutting off the fuel line

I picked up the DuroMax XP5500 Dual Fuel on a big sale at Amazon for a measly $515. Not quite as big as this 12,000 volt monster, but still gets 5,000 volts. Best five hundred I ever spent. Why dual-fuel? It's safer and easier to store 40 gallons of propane than storing 40 gallons of gasoline at your house.
