I used the propane regulator that came with my duel fuel generator . I changed the fill valves that came with the 100 lb tank so that I could have a propane co come to fill my tank. It worked great and ran more than 36 hrs during hurricane IAN here in Florida . It was a champion duel fuel gen 9000kwh.

Well thought through. You saved me so much research time. I am setting up this same generator to power my house in case of a major power outage, don't think that i would've even known that this kind of setup could've been done. It is quick and efficient and will work perfectly for me as I am setting up 2 100 lb tanks. With this setup I can easily switch between tanks without any issues, so I basically bought 2 of everything. I also like that I can check the gauge for gas levels. Thank you so much for sharing the information.

I'll use a Nash regulator attached to a gas line stub with shutoff and screw on a Nash regulator. Can use same hose and quick disconnect setup as you and should be able to run tri-fuel. Thank you for saying something about the propane tape. I did not know there was a difference between the white and the yellow. You saved me from making a big mistake. This is the first time I got a generator with dual fuel and a friend recommended me to use the LP instead of gasoline. I plan on using both. Shortly I will be making a video on the Duromax I have.

The white and the yellow tape are both teflon, but the yellow tape is twice as thick. You can use the white tape, but then you have to do 6 full wraps around the threads in order to meet code, whereas you only need 3 wraps for the yellow tape. And the regulator needs to have the vent facing down.

The white and the yellow tape are both teflon, but the yellow tape is twice as thick. They are made of the same stuff, and both will prevent corrosion and seal. You can use the white tape, but then you have to do 6 full wraps around the threads in order to meet code, whereas you only need 3 wraps for the yellow tape. And the regulator needs to have the vent facing down. Also with 2 regulators you are likely to starve it of propane at high load. I'm not sure about the regulator on the generator but it is probably enough, and you might not need any other regulator. Also with propane those gauges will only start showing that it's low, when there's no liquid propane left in the tank, so they don't work very well. The best thing to do is to pour a cup of boiling water down the side of the tank and then start at the bottom and slide your hand up that side of the tank. When you start feeling the tank get warm, then you know that the propane level is just below that point.

@@offgridgarageUSA By chance, did you complete your setup and did it work? I ask because I, too, bought this generator on Prime Day along with the parts linked to the video. Unfortunately, the generator wouldn't start up once attached. I don't know if the regulator I received requires some kind of adjustment, if it is defective or if DuraMax changed something in the design that may have caused this regulator to be incompatible (in use with a 100lbs tank as shown in the video). All I know is that I had to take everything but the 3/8" gas connector off in order to hook up the regulator that shipped with the generator before I could get it to start. Is it even necessary given that t ships with a regulator to buy the two-stage one shown here?
@VermontPrepper
@VermontPrepper Год назад
Mine worked with no issues. I didn't try the regulator it came with on the 100lb tank since the connection is not compatible. I only use that stock one for a 20 lb tank, so that's why I bought the 2 stage

Nice setup. I been thinking about getting a 100 gallon propane tank. But I decided to use just the 20 gallon tanks because in a long term grid down power outage I think it's a good idea to stop the generator and let it cool off or rest every 12 hrs. Its just a theri of mine tho. I'm not an expert on generators or propane LOL. But I do know why I went with a propane generator. I can store it for 30 yrs without treating it like ya do gasoline.

Thanks for the great video you made. I have the exact generator you have which I purchased in December of 2021 but never set it up or tried to start. Until now, I needed to get this generator out of my garage for much needed room. I did have trouble starting but it finally started with help from duromax, however my regulator was freezing up. I see in your video that you have a longer hose, so I went to purchase a 10’ earlier today. Now the rep from duromax said since the regulator froze up, the long hose as well as my 20lb propane tank might be the issue, so there sending out a new regulator with the shorter hose. I’m still going to buy that regulator you have and try that with the 20 lb tank. Don’t have room for a 100lb.

Wanted to add my thanks for a great video and apologies for rude replies. I plan to create a similar setup, perhaps with some simplifications. Reading up on gauges, I see the dial-types are not very helpful as they measure gas pressure, not liquid level. Found that there are ultrasonic monitors on the market that are quite accurate. Stick on bottom of tank, calibrate for tank size and monitor with smartphone or dedicated little monitor. The "The Mopeka Check XL" monitor (Amazon $38) is right size for your 100# setup. I'm not affiliated - just think these are a cool option. Or pour hot water on your tank and feel the level. Voila :-)

Nice video. I repair gensets as a business. Propane is a good way to go as the carbs on these Chinese gensets don’t like ethanol based fuel, especially if you let it sit for awhile without use. The metal alloy used is much less forgiving than the alloys used on a Honda, Yamaha etc. Second, make sure you break in engine properly....run at varying light loads for at least 4 hours or so, then change oil. Use decent quality synthetic 10W30 in winter and 30W in summer. Exercise under load for 15 mins monthly. You do this and you will increase longevity significantly.

Honda and B&S don't like it either. But all the China stuff is an exact copy of Honda. The trick to using gasoline is to use the shutoff valve to shut down the generator. Do this any you can let it sit unused for 3+ years and it'll still start on the first pull/crank. It'll spit n sputter due to the old gas, but it'll start.. But his has a bowel drain as well that he should use. Because any gasoline, especially ethanol, will cause the in bowel fuel shutoff solenoid to stick closed.
@ralphmowery2898
@ralphmowery2898 5 лет назад
@@MatHelm While probably overboard, on all my small engines that are not used very much, I use the ethanol free gas. Then put in stabil. When I let the engine sit for a while I drain all the gas or let it run empty. If I drain the gas, I then start it back up and let it run all the gas out of the carburetor. So far the engines on the generator and my garden tiller will start with one or two pulls when I want to use them as I put in fresh gas.

Since I will only be using propane I removed the gas tank which I believe will help with air circulation around the motor. It was very simple to do, 4 bolts and 2 hoses. It can be put back on in minutes if you need to switch to gasoline.

Thanks for the great video. I'm thinking of purchasing the XP15000EH and this comes with 2 built in regulators in the generator. Can anyone answer if, using a 100lb LP tank, there would be a need for a 3rd regulator attached to the LP tank? Thanks in advance.

I just revisited this video as I was looking for information on sizing a regulator for a Duro Max XP10000EH that I recently rebuilt, the manufacturer told me that it’s BTU consumption is 152,000, I’m waiting on the secondary regulator that’s mounted on the frame to arrive from Duro Max and in the meantime I need the proper sized regulator for a 100 pound tank. I called Marshall excelsior and spoke with a guy about it and he said don’t even use the regulator on the generator frame because you don’t need it, it won’t work because both are 11”, plug in right into the carburetor he said. Anyway I don’t know much but that doesn’t sound right so I ordered a Flameking regulator from Amazon rated at 160000 btu (close enough) for $17 dollars, I see you used the regulator on your 12000 Duro Max. I have been using the Marshall excelsior MEGR 291 rated at 175000 btu on my Duro Max 13000EH since 2021 thanks to your help and was I grateful during hurricane Ian no power for 2 weeks! When I get the new regulator for the 10,000 I’m going to install it and I’m going to run it with the flame king regulator then I am going to try it with the Marshall Excelcior 291 and see.

I'll throw this into the mix. I was talking to my Propane Provider about adding a propane generator to my home here in the Country (currently running a worn out gas generator.) and he said we would need a different regulator at the tank. According to him, the house line regulator does not have enough pressure to handle a generator flow. Said he would be happy to "Y" a fitting at the 250 gallon propane tank just for the generator. Then install a second "Red" Regulator just for running the generator off of. But I would still need the original regulator it has now. (Either green or Yellow, can't remember which and mine is not painted) And here's the kicker, I can run two regulated lines into the house, (at different pressures) but cannot legally run a high pressure line in to the house, then split it off to run the generator and add the lower pressure regulator for the house. Basically, both regulators must be at the tank!

I just got the same generator after about 6 power outages recently! Going to use propane as well, but my propane tank has gauge on it already, can you please recommend how I would bypass that step to still be able to set up a quick connect? Thanks for all of this info and time you put into this video.

Extremely helpful thank you. I just got a 2 stage changeover regulator to join 2 tanks so when one is empty the other kicks in. I don't know what kind of pigtails to buy for this or even how to hook it up without issues, but I'll give it a try.

Great video VP - this was *so* helpful. I have been struggling a bit - but I'm trying to connect a 120 gallon propane tank provided by the local propane company - and use it as my source - so not quite apple to apples. I'm sure I still need to add a 2nd regulator in-line with the first regulator - still reading on how to do that. But I also wanted to do exactly what you are doing - so that info is great. One comment in case you did not know. As you said you WANT the carb choke to be OFF. The reason for that - at least I on my generator - (I used a converter kit) there is a diapham switch that is connected in-line with the propane. As the generator cranks there is a small suction created - that suction will open up that diapham switch - which allows propane to flow into the carb. It a safety feature - if the generator is not running - creating that suction - the diapham switch will "turn off" - blocking propane flow. If you turn the carb choke to the CHOKE position you reduce the suction pressue - and propane may not flow at all.

My propane company will not refill on site if not connected to generator all the time, which won’t work for me. So I prefer the quick disconnect you did, but, when the tank runs low and I have to take the tank in for refill, will the quick disconnect be a problem? Or will that have to be removed to refill? Thanks. Great video.

Very nice... You have a (2 stage) double regulator setup. 1st is high pressure and 2nd is low pressure. The 2nd one has the vent that you have pointed to the side. You should have that pointed straight down cause if you get water or debris in time it could cause a problem with the regulator

@@highball7347 propane coming off a 500 gallon tank is 200psi roughly when full. High pressure ( 1st stage regulator) cuts it down to 10-15 psi to keep pressure up in small volume pipe like 1/2" if you have long run. Also keeps from freezing cause propane has a lot of moisture in it. At the home or appliance it's cut down again ( 2nd stage regulator) to 13" of w.c. or about 1/2 psi. I live in the northeast where this is very common install cause of the cold. Also I do commercial and residential HVAC for a living.

@@highball7347 I recently installed this generator have two regulators on my line. I have around 150ft of 1/2" ips underground gas line running from my tanks to my generator house. It works awesome. No issues. Definitely worth the money.

Thank you so much for sharing this information freely. It was easy to follow, I was able to get all the parts for my generator and 100 lb propane tank except for the two step regulator, the exact same one was not available but a similar one Camco 59323 Horizontal Two Stage Propane Regulator 160,000 btu/hr my generator is a 9000 peak propane, is dual but will use propane. The Camco has 1/4 inch fnpt and the 3/8 in fnpt so should be the same. All parts fit same, but looking for a little feedback before I finalize with tape etc. Any comments on the Camco?

Hello! Thanks so much for your hours of research figuring this out, it has been tremendously helpful! Do you have an updated link for the regulator? The one in your description goes to 'page not found'. I tried searching for the same model number on Amazon and did not find it quickly. I'm sure you'd want to update the link regardless so that folks that watch this video in the future can use your amazon associates affiliate link. I look forward to your reply, thanks again!
