Hey guys, I put this video together to share how I mixed using some of the setup suggestions from Durston and a couple of my own to help against bad weather such as high winds and rain. I hope they help and can be used weather you have the pro version (DCF) or the Sil Nylon.
I hope you enjoy this video and please consider subscribing, liking and if you would like to help support my adventure there are ways below. Thanks for following along!

I do the same thing with the Ridgeline. I didn’t know it was supposed to be any other way. It just made the most sense in the area physics. And I did that in some 30 mile an hour winds and it was rocksolid.

Hey Marmalade! Thanks so much for demonstrating your mods! I recently got a Durston X-mid 2 and have also been trying to figure out the best way to add extra guy lines in case of windy/bad weather. This video has been super helpful. Thanks again. 😊👍

Yup, tensioning the ridge line sure added a lot of stability to the whole setup, as I expected. The other adjustment option you have available for removing the last bits of slack from the walls is the trekking pole length. The two poles may end up being different lengths to compensate for unevenness in the ground. I think if you can get the rectangle shape as we discussed (looked really good in the video), and then work with the pole length to get it all pretty tight, and then tension the ridge line, the whole thing should be more taut. Then do the side guy-outs last.

Thank you and yeah I agree. Get the corners square, good pole height, stake out the ridge line and I agree the outer side pull outs are not weight bearing stakes but purely to pull the sides out to create more room and lack of condensation on me inside

@@MarmaladeOutdoors No problem, it’s interesting to work out the bugs. As we discovered in experimenting with the setup, the rectangle shape being accurate is critical with this tent. It might be worth a video to show how you as a tall guy get the rectangle shape to be perfect and talk about how shorter people could do it using the Pythagorean theorem method that we discussed. Also, I think the sandy ground you often camp on in your area can allow the trekking poles to work their way deeper into the ground as the wind shakes the tent, so you might have to at some point slack the ridgeline guy outs, extend the poles a bit, then re-tension. I know it’s adding more mass to your kit, but I think it might be worth considering carrying the little rubber tips that come with your CMT poles. If you put them on the poles when you pitch the tent in loose dirt or sand, they won’t dig in as much. Or maybe you could find some flat rocks to put underneath the poles.

Yes please. Trying to get this square is the thing I’m still working on. I would love a video on that

👏. Good explanation. I’m still (slowly) figuring out how to best draw out the head/foot sides of my Duplex w/o using sticks under those guy lines. Re ur Durston, imho, the more vertical side walls are a huge selling point.

You need to pitch that tent a lot more taut than it currently is in that video. That's why you're having problems.

What is the shoe situation for this season? I had a pair of Topo Pursuits for my road trip, and I'm not going back to Altras.

The 1-person looks so much smaller than the 2-person. Really interesting to see the space difference and your experience with it. I hope the 2-person will do okay for me and the dogs, but I'll definitely take some of your hacks into consideration as I prep for my two-week trip coming up, just as a precaution. Thanks for the video.

I do not have the pro 2p version but the regular. I think the pro might be a couple inches smaller. But Ive hiked with the 2p version with a dog and had plenty of space with a 50lb dog

@@pootinplays Good to know. Thanks for the reply. I've only spent two nights in mine with both dogs (50# and 70#) at this point, and it was fine even in high winds (was surprised by how little the walls moved, actually). I'm interested to see how it does with heavy rain added to the mix.

It looks like your technique with the ridgeline is better, but I guess it needs to be tested in real, blustery wind. I think the Durston is a great tent, but I wouldn't want the 1 person for the reasons you mentioned, I just don't like the narrow head room with or without wind. I used to have an MSR Hubba 1P which I loved. During covid I didn't do any camping, then when I pulled it out to go to the Sierra and set it up and got inside, I wondered why I ever loved that tent previously. Thereafter I bought a Big Agnes Copper Spur UL2 and I love all the extra room, including head space. However, admittedly it's much heavier than a cubin fiber tent, so that's a downside. Anyway, I hope your next test in big wind works out well for you.

Nice video. I'm wondering where you saw Dan Durston recommend staking the ridge guylines over the Durston logo. His storm setup video on his website says to stake out the ridge guylines inline with the ridgeline like you did in the last part of the video.

What does the extra clips, guide lines, and stakes weigh? 3 or 4 ounces?

Don’t have the tent anymore but yes, somewhere between 2-4 ounces

I don't understand why Durston recommended guying out across the company logos. As you noted, that induced a torquing motion--something you wouldn't want. Tensioning the ridgeline makes much more sense. That said, I smiled when you were lying in the tent and extending your arm to show the tent wall being nearly three feet away--but that was only on one side! At that moment, even without much wind, the other tent wall nearly touched your shoulder. I don't see how touching there will be avoidable in a high wind, given that the sleeping position is set diagonally. Your posterior will be well removed from the walls, but your head and feet always will be near them. (One advantage of your Triplex is that you sleep smack dab in the center, with the side walls equally distant from all parts of your body.) The present guy-out points on the sides of the Xmid don't seem to expand the area near your head and feet but the area near your middle, where you least need the walls to be tensioned out. Your extra lines may help, compared to what you first experienced on trail, but it's hard to see how they will be enough to keep the walls away from your face if the wind is high.

They don’t recommend guying over the logos. There’s a recent video from Durston showing the guy out point being in line with the ridge.

If you had bought the 2P you wouldn't have the sides blowing in on you. Only 3 ounces heavier.
@MarmaladeOutdoors
@MarmaladeOutdoors Год назад
I didn’t buy the 2p because it was too close to the weight of my current zpacks tent. My intent is to go lighter not get another tent almost the same weight
@jimlong7480
@jimlong7480 Год назад
@@MarmaladeOutdoors I see your point. It's only 21 once for a 2P tent. That's not bad. And you have some room to move around. As tall as you are I would think that's a good thing.
@HalfwayHikes
@HalfwayHikes Год назад
@@jimlong7480 - I also purposely chose the xmid pro 1. I understand what you're saying about just a few more ounces and more room. However, some of us have had "larger" ultralight tents and purposely want to go smaller/lighter. We're not camping, we're sleeping. Many of us fall in this weird range where we're too tall for the smaller tents. So this tent satisfies the wall angle issue that many of us tall-ish hikers are looking for while also being a 1 person tent. Also being able to fit in my backpack horizontally is key too. I'm a 6'1" guy and preferred my Zpack SolPlex (no longer made) - except for my quilt footbox rubbing on the tent wall. I've tried going the other way - Zpacks DupleXL. It's a great tent and it satisfied the footbox/length issue, but was just too much tent and didn't fit horizontally.
@jimlong7480
@jimlong7480 Год назад
@@HalfwayHikes I see your point. But Mike is 6' 3". A 1p tent doesn't seem big enough. My next tent might be a Duplex XL. I sleep wide and I also bring my pack inside.
