They reuse it.

The amalgam gets heated and boiled in a very controlled way, and they distill off pure Mercury and leave behind pure Gold, similar to distilling alcohol and leaving behind water. The Mercury is reused over and over, and isn't really lost at a measurable level.

But so is steam, and with the chance of fungus forming in the lungs as a result of inhaling steam over the course of the same amount of hours, I'll take the Mercury. Both will see you in the hospital, and Mercury will see you in a significantly worse situation, however it's so incredibly unlikely a situation to be in that it's definitely not a worry. At least, not for most people. These folks, sure, but they're in contact with the Mercury in such small amounts, for a very limited time, with likely no appreciable damage to the people doing it. Want to see a guy stand on Mercury? Flush Gold down a toilet using Mercury (and then reach into the Mercury to retrieve said Gold)? What about squirt Mercury out between his teeth? All ending in him going and getting a blood test to show that he's well within the normal category? Go check out Cody'sLab. The use of Science and proper understanding of the elements is what keeps him alive, even doing "dangerous" things. The worst injury he got was from tripping over a stool onto a wet floor. Or maybe when he punched a rock while using a diamond chainsaw to dig into a mountain in Nevada.

It's actually a really old technique. They're running old tailings with ultra *old* technology to catch every flake. Mercury extraction was one of the first ways of extracting gold, before it was discovered the technology to crush rocks to get the gold out in Australias case, and just dig to get it in the North American case.

Well yeah

The point is to have it easily divisible as they said in the video the entire time they were doing it. 30% here, 40% there, 5% over there, ect. Then they can melt it into bars if they want, however it won't add or diminish the price, as gold is gold, and will be re-melted either way. This is probably the most desirable gold as well (apart from Cyanide extraction) due to its' purity.

Almost definitely flux, which is water soluble (Borax). It adds basically nothing to the final weight (although not negligible obviously), and doesn't taint the quality of gold. This is almost as pure gold as you can get, even nuggets from the ground won't be as pure as this method.
