DESCRIPTION//
A tribute to the films of Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy.
FILMS USED;
Naughty Marietta (1935)
Rose Marie (1936)
Maytime (1937)
The Girl of the Golden West (1938)
Sweethearts (1938)
New Moon (1940)
Bitter Sweet (1940)
I Married an Angel (1941)
"They get more out of a look than I get out of the whole sex act"- Spencer Tracy (on Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald's infamous on-screen chemistry).
MACEDDY!!!!!!!!!!!!! MY BABIES. Seriously, my love for these two cannot be put into words. In short, during the last few months, they have RUINED me. I watched "Naughty Marietta" for the first time (and LOVED IT) over a year ago but never got around to watching their other films. Then about a month back, I watched "Rose Marie" and thus a grand obsession was born. I absolutely adore everything about them and their films and wanted to make this video- not only because I love them- but because I want everyone on RU-vid to love them too. I realise this is an unrealistic goal but, if I can turn even one person into a MacEddy fan, I will consider this a successful video. Considering they were MGM's Top Box Office earners in the 1930's, they are criminally under-appreciated today and I wish more people were aware of just how spectacular they were. While not all their films are masterpieces, their chemistry more than makes up for it.
To explain the quote at the beginning of the video to non-MacEddy fans (the diehards will no doubt have heard and cried over it many a time, as I unashamedly have)- Nelson Eddy gave an interview the day after Jeanette MacDonald died and was asked to speak about his first impressions of his former singing partner. His emotional response is the quote at the beginning of the video. What their fans (and the public alike) didn't know at the time was that Nelson and Jeanette had been on-again, off-again lovers for almost 30 years, carrying on their relationship while they were both supposedly happily married to other people. Their story is one of the most fascinating in Hollywood history and presents the studio system at it's absolute life-ruining worst. Louis B. Mayer's tampering in thier relationship resulted in both stars suffering nervous breakdowns and years of unhappiness- all because Mayer felt that if they ever divorced, his box office dominating duo would end their on-screen partnership as well. If you want to have your heart ripped into a million pieces, read "Sweethearts" by Sharon Rich and learn all about their soul destroying 30 year love affair. I'm currently half way through and it is SO good. I mean, it's mentally destroying me and my heart but SOOOOO GOOD.
Whether you believe Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald were a couple in real-life or not (some people don't, even though the proof is beyond irrefutable at this point), their films are truly something special and worth experiencing at least once. My personal favourite is "Maytime". I also highly recommend "Naughty Marietta", "Rose Marie" and "New Moon". To be honest, they're all great (with perhaps the exception of "I Married an Angel", which is my least favourite). I hope you enjoy watching this video as much as I did making it :)
As I mentioned earlier, Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy, unfortunately, aren't very well known today. In fact, it took nearly two years into my classic film watching journey for me to even recognise Nelson Eddy (who despite being one of the biggest concert artists of his time, is mostly forgotten today). This video changed all that for me; • Jeanette MacDonald & N... If it weren't for this incredible tribute, I probably never would've discovered the MacEddy filmography and, as a result, this video holds a very special place in my heart.
If you want to learn about these two incredible film stars, the greatest online resource for all things MacEddy is the wonderful maceddy.com. This website was a tremendous resource for me during the editing process of "Dust to Dust" and I am eternally grateful for the wealth of information contained throughout the pages of this site. I also strongly recommend that you purchase Sharon Rich's biography "Sweethearts"- it's a romantic, emotional, heart-wrenching read that will leave you captivated from start to finish.

from a Nelson interview given in 1958: "Beauty comes from the soul. The body is just a cover. Sure, it ages and gets worn. But, it`s the person himself who radiates beauty, or doesn`t. That`s why I`ll care for Miss MacDonald till the day I die. I know her and what she is to me can never be marred by age." Thank you for sharing this beautiful video of Nelson and Jeanette-Twin souls for Eternity.

I am 63, and I have been a MacEddy fan since I was 8 yrs old. My parents had the album with Jeanette in that beautiful pink gown looking stunningly gorgeous with Nels arm embracing her. I played that album to death over n over in my room never having seen a film of theirs til years later. I used to stare at the album cover while the record played. I'm a fanatic over them and felt every raw nerve and emotion in your description above. It's hard to relay what's in your heart anoutcthem to other people. My biggest sadness anout them was the remorse that Nels wasntvby her side in the hospital as she was dying. She knew he wouldn't be able to handle it and told her sister to look out for him, that he wouldnt do well without her. He spiraled down after she passed and went on to die not long after. If you see the last photograph of him, it's the saddestvthing. Without Jeanette in his world his life was meaningless. Louis B. Mayer was a tyrant for separating them. All the miscarriages that sweet lady had was heartbreaking. Gene Raymond was worthless to her. I wish Nels hadn't been touring before she died. It's the most bittersweet love story I've ever heard of. Most of my life I've followed them and kept the spirit of their love alive in my heart.

"You make a grown man cry"...... And thank you. One only wonders if they would have been able to sustain their love had they lived together. I would like to think that they would have. I've never seen two people express such intimacy in such wide ranges of feeling and emotion and playfulness. Truly an inspiration to bring this level of love and playfulness into our intimate relationships. As a man, I can see her as a role-model to women of her generation, and a powerful force in the empowerment of women to have their individuality and retain a femininity that was ground-breaking for her time at the very beginning of sound pictures. And he sent a loud message to men that a man could embrace his deep vulnerability and have his masculinity as well. Again, thank you so much for putting together these clips in such a tasteful, skillful and immensely touching manner. God bless their precious souls...

Beautiful. I've been a fan of theirs since I was a child. Watched all their movies many times over the years and will continue to watch them again any time they are televised. I hope to find some on DVD. This tribute was stunning - you could really see the love they had for each other. Their looks were so full of love and adoration. A beautiful tribute - thank you for sharing.

Thank you for putting it all together...now I own all 8 films, and know exactly where each clip is...having watched them NUMEROUS time. Nelson is my COVID CONSOLATION! He had an incredible talent...and I keep discovering new videos of his huge repertoire which included classics. Jeanette is also wonderful, but male baritones of Nelson's quality are rare.

Thank you for making this . It is magnificent. My favorite film of theirs was Maytime also. I remember telling my brother " John Barrymore killed Nelson Eddy". He couldn't believe it. Of course it was just in the film. When they sing Will You Remember I always tear up. The Czaritza scene is my favorite. To quote John Barrymore " It was a living emotion". They were a living emotion on screen. No one has ever matched their film chemistry. It is obvious that they truly love each other. There can never be another Mac and Eddy duo again. She was "stunningly beautiful" with a voice to match. He was extremely handsome with a voice to match. Bravissimo Laura, your tribute is pure gold !

Agree. I'm Swedish, I don't know anyone else in my country who knows or like them and their movies....Many years ago Eleanor Knowles Dugan sent me a copy of Maytime, I hadn't watched it since I was o child. I cried my way through the film 🥲

Beautiful, beautiful work, sharp clear images, very well done. And yes, they were in love IRL, complicated relationship, but they loved each other for over 30 years and that is the truth. Your lovely video captures it.

This video collage is a beautiful tribute that intuitively captures a once in a lifetime chemistry between Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy. Good on you Shoopdancer for piecing together the moments that highlight the incredible love these two fragile, flawed and amazingly passionate people had for one another; AND, as you say, you have only discovered MacEddy recently. Thank you for keeping their flame burning!

I love these two, and this is one of my favorite posts. You really have captured the essence of their love for each other; it's all in the look. No other couple expressed more than they did with just a look.

This is an adorable video and had me really emotional. I've known about their supposed IRl relationship for a while and if true it really upsets me that two people so suited for each other couldn't be together :/ I've only seen 'Rose Marie' but I really want to see more of theirs-- the final scene and their overall chemistry just gave me goosebumps and I've seen few couples with such perfect chemistry. Thanks for making this and making more people aware of them, it's a really amazing tribute :)

Thank you so much for this. It made my day :) I think the beauty of their on-screen chemistry is that neither were really acting. If you read "Sweethearts", half the time when they filmed their sweeping romantic scenes, it took them 10+ takes (which was abnormal for the time) because neither could keep their composure. In fact, in "The Girl of the Golden West", one of Jeanette's solos had to be cut because she couldn't get through it without breaking down completely. Also, if you watch them, in several of their big emotional numbers, one or both of them are crying (out of character, I might add). Like, when you read what was going on in their personal lives when they filmed these movies, it's incredible they actually got through it at all. And now I've started rambling...I can't help it, their story is unbelievable. Thank you for taking the time to say such nice things :) I'm so glad you enjoyed it.

Their profound need for one another became increasingly evident to them both until I believe they finally realized how foolish they had been in ever thinking they could be happy with anyone else.. I had always loved her but have become much more aware of Nelson's intense love for this beauty and his outrageously powerful voice. Just whew!

Thank you so much for making this video Laura, what a beautiful tribute ✨Everything you say on the description box is absolutely fantastic and I am so grateful to have "bumped" into this video. I have been quite interested in Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald for quite a while now after seeing them in a "Rose Marie" clip in "That's Entertainment". I also learnt about their off-screen relationship and love for each other, something that I could see from other clips of their work. I am hooked and I want to learn more so all your suggestions and explanation was very helpful. I did a video a while ago with classic couples with best chemistry and I didn't include them. A crass mistake that I am planning to correct soon, thus searching for more on them. I know you published this video a while ago but it is still making an impact and turning viewers into MacEddy fans. You can count me in!

I've seen this before but stupidly did not comment. However, after seeing the lovely and loving responses to this video, I had to say something. You have captured the special relationship between Jeanette and Nelson so beautifully and accurately--Congratulations! They were beautiful people inside and outside and their love was especially expressed through their music. For those of us who are still avid fans, we always hope they are sharing their love openly in heaven as they were unable to do so here on earth. Fortunately their films are all on dvd and can be purchased on amazon, but most importantly their music is also available on cd's on amazon. For those who would like to read their biographies,Sweethearts by Sharon Rich is also available on amazon and is a terrific read. You won't be bored!

This is such a magnificent tribute to, like what you said, a very underrated and borderline forgotten screen duo. Before watching this, I must admit that I've never seen any of their films, so this was such an eye opener for me :) I guess it can also be said that you've given justice to their relationship, regardless of who watches, and stayed true to the essence of their chemistry on screen (while I've never watched anything of theirs, the love they had for each other just jumps from the screen). This video definitely makes me want to know more about them now! 💝

Congratulations, Laura. This is absolutely the most beautiful tribute to movie stars I've ever seen anywhere on the web. It's so tasty, so delicate and especially so adroit in the way the clips are sequenced that it becomes obvious it was done out of someone's love for two stars who did their work long before the author of the video was even born. It's very moving to observe how far the magic of movie stars can reach.

We used to go to an old cinema in Pretoria West; my mom, my aunt and us four girls plus nieces... guess it were our chick flicks... my mom and her sister saw it when they were young and so it was passed on. I've never forgotten how sad I felt when what happened happened in "Maytime". We also saw "Rosemary" and "Girl of the Golden West".

One of my fav movie couples. Grareful thanks for this well put together video of their movies & beautiful voices. Who Is singing the intro song? Very nice. This video brings back many treasured memories. Actually saw J. McDonald, in person at my late husband's college graduation. A very pleasant experience! In my younger days I was a lyric soprano & sang Will You Remember (Sweetheart) from Maytime, which is a lovely song. I hope I did it justice.Still have the sheet music. Was also named Rose Marie after the movie, but found out after years that it's Rose Mary on my birth certificate. Many names were mixed up at that time. I'll be watching the other vid's of them. Thanks, again.

Laura chose Dust to Dust since the music shows that the magic of Mac and Eddy is timeless. What they had on screen is " a living emotion". The song Dust to Dust ties that " living emotion" to today's generation. The connection works! She is trying to reach out to the younger ones. She already has the Baby Boomers.

That awful modern music just does not fit. It spoils the whole atmosphere of a world long gone. I watch Nelson and Jeanette’s films to get away from all that.
