Singer and 1930s movie star Jeanette MacDonald discusses with Tony Thomas the frustrations of her final attempt to write an autobiography. The project was dropped in 1960 due to her ill health. (By the way, she made 8 films with Nelson Eddy.) In 2004 the unfinished, typed manuscript was finally published, with Jeanette's handwritten notes, corrections and cross-outs on nearly every page. The book is titled "Jeanette MacDonald Autobiography: The Lost Manuscript", available at Amazon and also at this website, where you can read an excerpt at this link: maceddy.com/jeanette-macdonal...

If Jeannette felt they were scraping the bottom of the barrel in 1959, one can only imagine what she would think of the absolute trash passing for entertainment now.

Yep. In a way, I’m glad Jeanette’s generation isn’t around today to see the likes of WAP or the Kardashians.

I’ve read Jeanette’s autobiography and was sad to find that it’s mostly made up of the image she’s been used to presenting to the world along with some sweet stories and no small amount of sself-depreciation. The interview seems to reflect the difficulty she’s been having trying to balance honesty with preserving her image. I’m glad it was preserved and grateful that you’ve shared it.

Thank you, Susan. You're very perceptive and your comments on the mark. Sometimes it's more about what Jeanette doesn't say that is revealing. Although it's surprising she admitted a history of marital problems with Gene. No wonder he didn't want it published.

@@maceddy My mother adored the MacEddy movies, but I didn’t appreciate their wonderful dynamic until she had passed. Mom would have loved knowing that they were in love and shared a secret bond until they were both gone from the earth. I like to picture them as singing angels free to express their love openly for all eternity. Thank you for helping to keep their incredible talents and unique story alive for future generations to discover and enjoy.

@@maceddy I find it ironic, though, that people downplay Nelson's own bad behavior towards Jeannette. I think Jeannette would have been wise to have not further involved herself with either Gene or Nelson, but she was apparently the best thing that happened to both of those men and its a shame neither treated her fully as she deserves to be treated - although with that said, Jeannette was no saint either. Honestly, if she had her sincere doubts about Nelson, she should have cut him clean and done the same also with Gene. In the end, she chose to marry Gene and continue to involve herself with Nelson and ended up with a whole slew of additional woes that she could have avoided had she been wiser. It is really sad for everyone involved - that Gene didn't love his wife and treat his wife as she deserved to be treated, that Nelson didn't treat Jeannette better as she deserved to be treated, and to be fair to them both - Jeannette should have been the mature one that once she spotted both of them respond badly to move on from both - but for her own reasons, she chose not to. In the end, Jeannette had at least enough honour to never divorce Gene, as that would have made things far worse for herself and everyone involved. Either way, you can look at their lives - admire their beautiful voices, you can admire their acting, you can appreciate their humility (or attempts at humility), and you can learn that if you are in a relationship - 1) If you are married, do not cheat or divorce; 2) If you sense something off in an unmarried relationship, be brave to confront or move on, and 3) Don't commit adultery or homosexuality - it will backfire completely and ruin oneself as well as others in the process. Such is the case with these three.

@@sheilahballard1039 Well I’m not here to just tell people what they want to hear. I prefer telling the truth, even if it means people choose to ignore that, but that is their problem to deal with. I was like them - it’s never easy to face the truth, but God never tells a lie. I try to tell the truth now like He does. I hope one can learn from the faults of these three, and May God have mercy and bless you.

She’s right - as a voice student, writing is a chore to me as well. I’m always happier and glad when I don’t have to write and as a singer, she is 1000 % correct about how difficult singing is and how the concert stage and opera stage have their own difficulties but equal enjoyment. It is quite inspiring to hear her [and Nelson] speak on music.

Это точно музыка вернее любовь к музыке их обьединила . Впечптлнние страсть к друг другу была как будто тот и другой были сама музыка т.к. их внешняя гармоничность перекликались с музыкальными переливами.

I've heard that Robert Wise wanted Jeanette for "The Sound of Music" to play Mother Superior. If that's true - what a shame it didn't happen. Would have been a glorious cap to her career.

Does anyone know what she meant when she said she pushed herself - professionally - was she working long hours for the camera or training in arias that demanded a lot of time or both of those and other things too?
@maceddy

She does not elaborate further in either written or verbal letters or interviews. However, one might gain clarity by reading the biography "Sweethearts" and understanding some of the challenges she faced in getting ahead with her career and, in particular, her challenges with Louie B. Mayer at MGM, which severely affected her personal life. The book link is here: amzn.com/dp/0990323005/

@@maceddy Thank you - I was a teen, singing under contract in NY when I decided I would not pursue a career as a singer - I enjoyed the professional opera training - for decades - and performed from England to Hawaii - while pursuing other interests - so I was curious what she meant by "pushing" for her career.
