Exactly. Precisely the same situation. Her glittering eyes and that smiling acceptance while she reports he denies it ever happened is a pretty glorious, if idealized, picture of health and balance. And on television. Of course it sounds good to be able to shine a light on someone’s questionable action, and more importantly, their denial of it- but she has to be at ease with the possibility of being disbelieved by the audience in order to do so in such a humane way. Anyway. Love Meryl, and appreciate your well-placed spot-on reference here. The ego on an actor to think he’s in a position to make that kind of decision. The mind reels

I don't know what to say about Dustin. Dustin said the movie Tootsie changed the way he thinks about women. But this attitude with a partner in the scene is unacceptable. If, after that movie, he really has not changed, it is sad because he will always be a rude person.

@@zeusros man, those interviews about tootsie are a harder second watch than first, and they just get worse on subsequent viewings. If you don’t let them sink in too much, it sounds like he got some insight into the experience of older women and really let it change his worldview. If you break it down though, he says he *completely ignored* and *never made eye contact with* all women he wasn’t sexually attracted to, and then he implies that’s the standard issue male setting- which is complicated footwork to avoid taking any responsibility for the way he’s just admitted he organized his world for his entire adult life to that point- and then he treats his realization (…) that older women “are human beings” as if it’s a spiritual conversion, rather than a weird lack of empathy and connection he never should’ve spoken out loud about, much less expected praise for. I always liked him fine, and initially loved one of those interviews. Took a minute to realize what it really was - I relate him to the well-written characters I’ve seen him play over the years. And he still has the baby face, to boot. Anyway he’s the worst

Famously, on the set of Marathon Man, Laurence Olivier said to Dustin Hoffman, who was literally passing out during shoots after depriving himself of sleep for several days to get into character: "My dear boy, why don't you just try acting?" By the way, Marathon Man is a fantastic movie, if you haven't seen it. One of the best Thrillers ever made, with Olivier and Hoffman giving tour de force performances, no matter how different their means to get into character were, lol.

@@PhantomFilmAustralia lol 😆. She had to navigate back to good acting, away from closing up and shutting down, as a lesser actor and many very seasoned actors would’ve done. Slapping her impeded the process. It didn’t create her response, it set up an odd, egomaniacal, chaotic barrier to her response. She had the chops, the muscle memory and discipline, to dismantle enough of it to be present and open in the scene. He added unnecessary strain. Not the narrative strain that leads to complexity and deeper experiences of emotion. The much more boring, irritating strain of having no sense of your scene partner’s psychological stability, and the unavoidable awareness that he believes this entire process- if it isn’t explicitly *about* him- does at least hinge around him. Also he finds himself insightful, and daring, and isn’t going to worry about what effect his delusions have on the film, much less their effect on anyone present. It’s the behavior of a buffoon. So is lying about it. He’s not a genius who knew what he was doing, he’s just a guy who was bleedingly desperate to be important and famous and surprising and clever so his parents would love him finally or whatever - point is, nothing to do with acting, nothing to do with film. Decisive action is not impressive on its own. If you’d replaced the toddler on set with a grown man, she might not’ve needed the whole 10 minutes. Oscar in 5 to 7. Who knows. I love this film exactly as it is, but the next level idiocy of crediting her performance to his inability to read what room he’s in does have me recasting him in my head for fun. It’s petty dominance dressed up as toughness. She recovered very well. And he knows it too - best believe if he thought he created the emotion she puts across on film in that scene, he would’ve been bragging about it all this time, rather than lying about it like the embarrassing moment of ignorance it was.

“He denies it ever happened by the way” So who do we believe? A character assassination years after the event. Yet another man on the gallows of public opinion with precious little chance of being able to now clear the smear of such allegations. (Amber anyone?) Well, we have her story. And only hers. I’m a fan. Always admired her. But the trouble is she can’t make up her mind whether it was a hard slap during a ‘previous take’ (which she says repeatedly) - which some put down to method acting (for which Hoffman and Streep are both famous). In which case there maybe footage which still survives Or (perhaps realising the footage issue ) should we now believe the pivot at the end to when she says it took place “off camera” Major inconsistency right there in her story. A jury wouldn’t buy it. If it’s something altogether different and sinister
