Somebody on RU-vid said she had a weak small voice..Are you Kidding??. Here she is at almost 50 and hitting all the notes with power... This woman was a powerhouse. This is not an easy song to sing. But this is the Great Dusty Springfield, almost without peer, so versatile, with her smoky melodic voice. And a charismatic performer. Her smile lights up any room...simply superb.
Yea, very good but in this example she didn't hit all the notes with power. When she'd sing, "You started something...." she showed weakness during the word started.
@@lazurm considering her health and lifestyle, its a miracle her vocals where as good as they were! Really they were good the song just needed lowering a bit more and perhaps have some convenient longer instrumentals (delay and reverb would have helped to).
Well said jjs499 . Powerful woman for decades...unmatched musical icon. A shame about her mental illness issues but may have been catastrophically misdiagnosed or underdiagnosed. Of course mostly from early childhood family of origin stuff. Ie.Crappy early childhood !!. What it took to triumph over that. No small feat Thats not all ,.Also triumphed over addictions from trying to self treat , self medicate. Her doctors and therapists etc.failed her for years especially at the beginning. All the time, she's performing on live stage or TV To thousands, millions and having to deal with the nonsense from recording company's misogynists in trying to produce albums that would sell. Not many pop rock artists survived this era. She was truly a magnificent ,courageous fighter to survive it all. Dusty is a great role model for many reasons. For such a quiet, shy convent school girl what an incredible life albeit unmercifully shortened much too early. Thankfully, we have so many performances, interviews and documentaries preserved on youtube to continue to enjoy and keep her alive. FOREVER DUSTY !!!
How 19 people could vote thumbs down is besides me. Dusty had that sexy sultry voice that set her apart from the others. Loved her music then and still do. Rest in Peace Dusty with Ritchie Valens Whitney Houston,Elvis and way to many to list.Micheline Kribs. Rolla,MO Oh she wan't feeling well when she did this performance and died from cancer.
A great, great song that never stops making you feel good. The background vocalists are awesome and Dusty turning around to acknowledge them is a nice touch. Most amazing, some of the background musicians weren't even born when this tune hit the charts. Not everyone has the talent to bridge generations. Rest in peace fine lady.
Especially after she had gone through years of wilderness musically, mental illness and stopped singing/creating for so long... I‘m reading her book Dancing With Demons. It’s heartbreaking, but makes this comeback all the sweeter
This one, her first hit, never seems to get old! Love how she takes note of the brass & strings sections & then acknowledges those awesome backup singers. Looks like she did something we couldn't see while the strings were soaring to make the pianist & back up singers smile. Personality, grace & talent beyond measure.
Now how many singers can sing a hit they had almost 30 years prior and sound so great? Not many. Wonderful job by Dusty, who I'm sure would have preferred to sing one of her more recent hits. But being a sport, gave the song requested of her, her first solo hit. A perfectly charming performance with great backing vocals, that pleased her!
@Gazzara5 yes, I noticed. but it was not the illness. She was always second guessing and doubting herself and trying to correct or cancel what she thought was wrong. It's sad, because it sounds so perfect to us now. In recordings, that led to a lot of really great songs that were not released or rediscovered until many years later because she would not allow it or fired the producer. Live performances like this were a real trauma for her. So when she does not hit the note, she clutches her throat instinctively in an effort to fix it.
@@pbscraze what are you talkin about? Sjtom said gone too soon as in when she died, she was only 60 which is a tad young to die even in the 90s. Your response has nothing to do with the honor he gave in his comment.
The greatest, Dusty, if only she had understood how much her public loved her during the days when she was tired and feeling low. Still loved and admired as Britain's greatest ever 'sou'l voice to this day. God bless Dusty- rest in peace.
Listen, all ye who halfway functioning ears. I was knocked out by this live performance! She sang this song at the same level of power and intensity as her original performance. I first was trying to watch her lips to try to figure out if the song was mimed. The backup and instrumentalists also nailed the original version to the letter. Just incredible!
Mary Isobel Catherine Bernedette O'brien came up with it. Only joking. Think Mary was tagged by someone as a child with the nick name "Dusty" as she played sports outside and got dusty at times. Years later, The Springfields singing group came up with the name Springfield for their 3 piece band after singing in a field on a spring day. Or so the story goes.
Cannot love her enough. From her early days in the Springfields to her debut single to her final single "Roll away" Dusty will always be a cut above the rest
She was still fabulous, with the cancer on hold. She did an album in the early nineties, then got sick again and died in 1999. Dusty was one of a kind. Such a presence up on the stage with her soulful voice.
Beautiful performance!Love those background vocals!Just a perfect song! Even though other artists have recorded this song no one can touch Dusty’s version.
I recall a taxi driver taking a passenger to the Cliffs of Mohir ???in Ireland. He mentions his passenger appeared to be somewhat upset even though he never spoke. The passenger was Tom Springfield carrying out his sister's last wish to have her ashes scattered over her favourite place.
This happens to be my favorite Dusty Springfield song I only want to be with you I was very young when the song came out I think it was only about 12:13 years old
LOVE her flair and drama, the way she moves. If you look at the 60's performances, she danced during her fast songs like she was really having a good time. Soo talented. What an entertainer.... she lights up the stage, where ever she is. For all her insecurities she was ballsy. Waaaaaaaaay ahead of her time.
Love her music to this very day. Love the iconic girl groups. I am so glad their music is still available today. Not like the music of today. I love country music and the songs of the 50's and 60's
You don't hear many covers of Dusty's hits , because not many could sing them, her range, voice , phrasing was just too good. Here she is here at 49 singing her first hit. Still hitting mostly all the notes. After abusing her voice with alcohol, coke, cigarettes. She did quit drinking in 83 I believe it was. too bad she didn't know how good she was. But she was a little more content i think in her final 5 years or so looking back at her body of work and performances. Gosh i miss her.
i think its because she is always putting her soul in the performance....looking to express dome part of her with the song! She was a great singer and performer
What a beautiful voice this beautiful lady had! And not only that she was so elegant knew how to dress well and had her hair well done and nice to see. Real talent cannot be faked, Dusty had it and all her songs prove it.
Always loved that song, even when I first heard it in the 60's. Well written, great Melody, and the absolute best vocalist singing it!! God Bless Dusty Springfield!! 🎵💖
What a fabulous voice and fabulous personality! I'd give an arm and a leg to have been there and met her!! Did the audience realise just what a treat they were in for? I'm jealous. She's a diamond lady!
The late great Dusty Springfield ,I saw her perform this sond on the Ed Sullivan Show. She has thatzexy, sultry voice that set her apart from the others. How 19 people could vote thums down is besides me. Just think you can actually understand the lyrics, perhaps its becasue ther is no cursing, Abnother one of our greats taken way to soon in lifeshe died from breast cancer.Rest in Peace Dusty with Whitney Houston,Elvis,Johhny and June Carter Cash and way to many others to list. M.Kribs
Led Zeppelin's manager Peter Grant flew to New York City in October, 1968 & met with Atlantic Records owner & founder Ahmet Ertegun and his business partner Jerry Wexler. Unbeknownst to Grant, Dusty Springfield had already put in a good word for the group to Wexler while recording her album "Dusty in Memphis" the previous month. Springfield was a friend of bassist John Paul Jones who had been a member of her touring band. An impressed Ahmet Ertegun offered Grant and the group a five year deal, with a $200,000 advance, an unheard of amount of money from a group that no one had even heard yet.
Just an amazing song by an amazing singer. As well as the Bay City Rollers Samantha Fox did a version too. They all sound brilliant but have such a contrast in style, but its the kind of song that's versatile & sounds good which ever way its sung.
