What do the Dutch eat on King's Day (Koningsdag): tompouce!
But how do you eat a tompouce?
Even Dutch people can't agree on this. It's subject to debate and everybody has his/her own way of eating 'tompouce' (also spelled 'tompoes'); which is the Dutch version of the Napoleon cake.
A tompouce can be very tasty, but if you don't have a strategy on how to eat it, you might end up with a mess.

It's actually not that hard. Take the top of turn it around and put it at the bottom. That way you have the tasteful glace on the bottom where your taste buds are and you don't make a mess eating it because you can't squeeze it.

It is a challenge, everytime you get served one. When you are all sitting in a circle with a tompouce, other people are spying on you which tactic you use 😂

As a Dutch person, I think I can give some good advice eating a tompouce. Start by eating the top part (aka the pink/orange cookie thing), and then I eat the rest.

No, you seperate the parts, but then put the top part under the rest of the tompouce. That way you can eat all of it at once without making a mess. ;)

Ok, i just have to share... You use a fork to slice the middle of the cream in halve (slide it through on both sides), then you take off the top and eat it, then you take the bottom and eat it (or the other way around). And you want to do it like this (imo) because the cookie side tastes best with the cream on.

I have been eating tompouces professionaly for most of my life, this is how I do it! Take the top of and take a small bite from the upper and lower part. This way you still get to eat the whole thing together and not make a mess.

Going Dutch, split the bill ie send a Tikkie so I split my tompouce as well. Sure the reconstruction version works out too but I like to split the tompouce and scoop pastry / custard cream with some wipped cream all in one go. And it's time to eat one this kingsday indeed

"You just eat and suffer" sums it up :) Can't think of any way to eat this, without making a major mess of it. But... they sell this in mini format too sometimes: small bites that go in your mouth as a whole. Oh my, just learned two new techniques: verbouwen / reconstruct and in tweeën delen / divide into two halves. But you had these in pink only and everywhere, long before they made them in orange for koningsdag.

usually i split or kantel. also when i have them at home i keep them in the freezer and eat them when they're still partly frozen so the custard in the middle is a bit harder and won't make a mess. i have to try the verbouwing though!

The trick is to scoop the sides of the cream in the middle with your fork, eat that and leave thin layer of cream in the middle. Then squish the top layer on the bottom layer, and the 3 cm of cream is now 1 cm. Now it fits in your mouth and just bite off pieces, while holding it in your hands. No knife needed, just a napkin to clean your hands after.

I take the top off and stick it to the bottom upside down. Less messy and you get every flavour with every bite 😅 Edit: commented too early. I'm a 'verbouwer' indeed 😁

It's really easy to eat once you know how. First bite keep it at an angle so you only bite the bottom layer (with some cream), second bite change the angle or turn it upside down so you only bite the top layer. Repeat this.

The way i would eat a tompouce is by splitting the tompouce apart by using my fork to cut through the cream and have 2 halves with equal amount of cream on both sides (yes i am Dutch)

i mostly Lick the cream from every side, when it is still in the paper, that makes it easier to take of the top without getting your fingers very dirty. Then take to top off, put the bothem down and dip the top in the cream. the last part can be done with a fork but i mostly do it pizza style. O that was so dutch, you can pack it in some alu foli or plastic bakje.

If have to correct eating tompouces only on Koningsdag because their is a white glacé version that you can get at a bakery, i even got the white ones in belgium so it’s not a Koningsday specialty anymore.

The filling is called banketbakkersroom . its quite easy to make ,this is an old 1950s recipe making it from scratch Ingredienst are 2.5 dL ,Milk 2 egg yolks . vanilla stick . 50 gram sugar 25 gram flower salt. Boil the milk , with salt and vanilla . leave it to absorb the flavours and flower is cooked . Mix the egg yolks , Flower and sugar with a spoon till its smooth ad to the hotmilk and stir while putting it back on the fire till its boils . remove the vanila stick. and let it cool. with some stiring from time to time preveniting the forming of a skin . And done.

Everyone says they eat the top first, then scoop the pudding and then eat the bottem piece. But I don't care, I just eat the whole thing at once. My whole face will be a mess, but I want to taste all the pieces at once. It's part the experience. 😁😋

I attack mine... I mean, I hold my fork horizontally and the teeth vertically. This way I can glide my fork all the way in on the top part of the tompouce. When I turn my fork, a piece of the top breaks off. Now it's ready to eat, or break a little further

To be fair, as a Dutch person, I sometimes still eat a tompouce like a sandwich or by cutting into it, even though I know how to eat it properly. I suppose I like a challenge. Anyway, personally I don't care too much for tompouces (they're still nice to eat with King's Day as a tradition) and think the wafer is actually the best part about it. May I suggest the mini tompouces which you can eat all at once? Also, no insane amounts of cream which makes for a better balance between cream and wafer if you ask me. You can probably guess I'm also not too much of a fan of Bossche Bollen. Cream overkill! Give me all the oliebollen.

There are Chocolate / Bossche Bollen in various sizes, but those from Den Bosch are absolutely the biggest. 1 per person counts as lunch.

@@feliciagaffney1998 Well, let me rephrase that. There is not one proper "official" way to eat it, only various 'techniques', if you will. To my knowledge De Verbouwer, or Omgekeerde Daklichter is proven to be the most efficient, and the most favoured technique. Lift the upper layer up and put the rest of the tompouce on top of the upper layer. Cream won't come bursting out whilst eating. Some like to place the entire tompouce on its side, at which point it will become easier for fork users to cut it up. There's another technique where I lift the upper layer off, and use it as a scoop for the cream, instead of placing it under the rest of the tompouce. The reason they are not already packaged with the upper layer lifted off and placed under the tompouce is that it probably would mean the cream would not be kept in place while it is packaged. It also wouldn''t look as pretty.

How to eat a tompouce: Take the top off. Flip the top and use some of the whip cream and other sugary goodness, smear it on top of the top part. Eat the top part. Eat it with your hands. Rinse and repeat, eat the bottom part with your hands too! Take a couple of napkins, it WILL be a bit messy, but still very delicious!

I’m a splitter and eat tompouces whenever I want. They are always available in the AH supermarket. On Kingsday they change the top color from pink to orange. BTW doggy bags are NOT Dutch!

You pick up the tompoes and you turn it around and pick up the bottem and put IT on the top so the Orange side is covered by the old bottem.

I take the top of and cut the top into 5 pieces and the rest into 5 pieces than I replce the top pieces on the rest pieces and eat the 5 pieces by hand

If you want to eat it all at once and on the proper manner, there is only one good way. Seperate the roof from the rest with the pink on top. Then put the rest on top of that roof. And voila you can eat it all at once without spilling :) . im not 40+ and only know this for a short time

My engineering brain still doesn't understand how this was designed to eat. Just give me a puddingbroodje instead. Far more practical. And yes, that's with soft dough, but that suits the "cream" better. Anyhow, happy King's day in advance! 5:59... 'curd'.. yeah, pudding... Not like porridge, but yeah. This is why I call it my engineering brain: think not how to use it, but how it is designed - or barely designed in this case... :)

Like always in the middle ? Translation with google says it’s custard, crème pâtissière is a better description I think ... You’re saying it’s yellow cream instead? I would think custard is a better description but don’t know Bart could clarify that. 😅 It’s the budget version should he buy it at a bakery? crème pâtissière, yellow cream or custard the icing it’s to sweet for me if I can I’m choosing something else.

@@H1SCOTTY its called banketbakkersroom because is solely made by a banketbakker. With fresh and the right ingredients. Not the factory HEMA meuk. And yeah, your translation makes more sense. I was too lazy to find the real translation. And i want the non or less well Dutch speakers to recognise the Dutch word for it. (Sorry I'm spoiled, i had a relationship with a patissiere for 6 years. It was so tasty)

Dat verbouwen ziet er echt zo ordinair uit, mijn voorkeur gaat uit naar de top tussen twee tanden van je vork te zetten, en dan de vork een klein stukje te draaien. Hierdoor breekt de toplaag waar jij je vork gezet hebt en kan je die opeten. Vervolgens snijd je op gelijke afstand de onderkant met de room en eet je die ook op. Volgorde kan ook andersom.

I as dutch just take the top of , eat that and then lick the cream then eat the bottom, there is no way you can eat this normally. But than again dutch are not normally

I absolutely hate the tompouce and I believe it was invented as a joke. People who actualy like to buy tomouce are heartless masochists who were only provided to humanity by evolution to give us adversaries. It is a well known fact that people only like cream because they were taught it is good, in the same way people only like strawberries because they are red, when in fact, they are generally (Store bought) not extremely tasty or interesting to eat. Nobody likes puff pastry because it tastes like cardboard and the way it is used in a tompouce, when combined with sugar glazing, it creates a hard to chew substance that is just not pleasant. 0/7 would avoid at all cost. Death to the tompouce. It is a rotten and sodden thing.
