At the age of just 7 years old, Joe escaped Uzbekistan as a Jewish refugee with his family. His Father and Grandfather were exiled for entrepreneurship practices which were deeply illegal in the fascist state, but clearly a strong bloodline in the Spector family.
He spent nearly a year in Europe refugee camps, where his family lived in poverty on food stamps. Coming to the US, Joe was overwhelmed by the extreme levels of freedom as he had little understanding of the possibilities available in the US due to his confined upbringing.
After attending college and truly bringing himself up by the bootstraps, Joe ultimately left a job at JP Morgan to attend Wharton where he found his place for the first time in his life, discovering the dream of starting a company.
Back in Uzbekistan Joe's grandfather ran a black market dentistry which is important to highlight when you see that Joe’s career has been centered on creating accessible healthcare-first for humans with Hims and now for pets with Dutch.
