I grew up in the Milwaukee area and raised on the AWA. Bockwinkle was truly greatness. Style, charisma, and great on the mic. The original Heenen Family: Bockwinkle, The Crippler Ray Stevens and manager Bobby Heenen. I would advise you at the very least look up some of their interviews from the AWA. Very entertaining and for the time cutting edge.

Howdy neighbor. I'm from St Paul. Nick was terrific in and out of the ring.

Nick Bockwinkel is criminally underrated today. He was literally one of the top 5 wrestlers in the history of the industry...!

Loved Nick Bockwinkel. I grew up on the AWA. He was an excellent heel. Bockwinkel and Heenan were absolutely fantastic!

Nick Bockwinkel is one of very best of all-time IMO. I am talking Mount-Rushmore-level greatness. He could work against the big guys or the high-flying guys. He was great on the mic. His in-ring style and psychology was believable. Just the fact that the guy went as "Nick Bockwinkel" without some stupid Vince-McMahon-inspired gimmick says a lot. One of the greatest tag teams ever was Bockwinkel and Ray Stevens with Bobby Heenan as manager. What an amazing combination of talent!

Agreed. AWA didn't get enough attention for him to be at the Flair level of instant recognition, but Nick could do it all.

I like Nick Botwinkel with Masa Saito Tag Team.... Of course IMO Saito is underappreciated for being as legit as he was

Bockwinkel had an incredible run in Georgia also right before the Georgia Wrestling Wars started in 1973. It was when Dutch started there I believe. His dad Warren Bockwinkel was a great in ring talent as well.

hey guys i dont know if this im just saying would be stupid ,but personally i love watch and rewatch the mighty battles bockwinckel had during the years but what made me build a super respect for the guy was the run hw had in the awa in the 80s,when iirc he was in his 50s those matches against curt hennig were stellars,

Great on the mic. Great in the ring. A tough SOB ( you had to be back then ) and carried himself like a champion but with dignity. He had a family, you never heard a story of him dancing naked on a bar or running around with ring rats. If you wanted a true professional wrestler back then it was bockwinkle and sammartino.

I always enjoyed the AWA champion defending the title in Memphis. It increased the talent pool pursuing the AWA title beyond just the wrestlers based out of Minneapolis and made the AWA seem much bigger than they were.

bockwinkel maybe the most underrated wrestler of all time. which is amazing because he should be in everyones' top 10

I know he's in my top 3. Up there with Harley Race and Ric Flair. Bockwinkel turned a vanity promotions belt into a legit world title because of how good he was and because he'd defend the belt in Texas, Tennessee, Japan, wherever he could get booked. When Bockwinkel had the AWA belt it mattered and was only behind the NWA belt in importance.

I lived in a Canadian province where we got got Stampeded Wrestling from the West and AWA show from the east in Winnipeg. Both "styles" were a lot different. Had my heroes for Calgary Bret Hart,Bruce Hart, Davy Boy Smith and from Winnipeg my heroes were Hulk Hogan,Verne Gagne and Ric Martell. Thats being said Nick Bockwinkle was the best wrestler i had ever seen (sorry Bret you were still green) up to that point. Nick Bockwinkle,Bret Hart,Johnny Saint, Lou Thesz are my pro wrestling mount rushmore. Saint and Thesz are recent additions (last 20 yrs or so ) when I decided to check out wrestling from years past.

Growing up on Memphis rassling, Bockwinkel was so easy to hate. Smug, arrogant, well dressed, well spoken, came off as educated. Many of the things most of us fans were not. Seeing Lawler do an actual wrestling move was like seeing a shooting star. It did not happen often. And we were all like, "Lawler can actually wrestle, who knew?". Because 99% of the time it was wild brawls. Dutch didn't do a bunch of chain wrestling either. Dundee carried that load when a Charles or Robinson came to town. People would have gotten bored of it week after week but having Bockwinkel in ever once in a while was entertaining. Bockwinkel would always point out that he was a wrestler and Lawler was just a brawler. That bastard. People would cheer when Lawler would drop kick, sunset flip, or reverse a hold because it was so rare to see. Dutch was so popular in the territory because he was so easy to relate to. We didn't know any "kings'" or "superstars". But a hot tempered red neck that would slap the taste out of your mouth if you crossed him? Most of us had more than one of those in our own families.

I didn't find Bock boring at all. Just well paced. He had holds but he was nefarious. I love when he would jump off the second rope onto a dudes back. His leg scissors from the corner after a snapmare, and how he would hold onto an arm drag and reverse it 8nto an arm bar.

As far as matches shown on TV from the Mid-South Coliseum between Bockwinkel and Lawler Lance Russell’s mic work can’t be overlooked. That on top of them controlling the the crowd made those matches seem super big league.

Bockwinkel was "world champion" , the fans expected him to wrestle . Thats why it got over .

I'm not sure Dutch is giving those matches Lawler had with Nick enough credit. Only one match where Lawler was supposed to get fined for every punch he threw did they actually wrestle. Most of the others, I saw a different Bockwinkle than his "outside of Memphis" style. I have to admit, when he first came to Memphis with that big AWA "inmate" belt, I was mesmerized. He was a class act champion, but he could brawl with Lawler too.

I remember Nick being manhandled in the early 70s by Billy Robinson. He also threw him around in the AWA movie "The Wrestler" in 1974. But later in the 70s and into the 80s Nick started to get bigger and stronger as Billy started to accumulate injuries and get older.
