Played with Dutch both with his original band on harmonica when Rick ( Dutchy's harp player ) left to start his own band and as a guest singer while we were on tour and ended up in the same city playing and dropped in...Dutchy was great...invited our whole band to hang out...watch the show and jam! One of the greatest honors of my career was to tour with him on harp...we knew every single one of his songs so i'd start singing a song and Dutch would jump in...shake his head at me as we would just love to get him to do songs like "Hi Ho Silver" and scat!....our band "Traffic Jam" also played blues...He was our hero coming up! Rick Jeffreys on Harp backstage at many shows taught me some pretty cool licks!...r.i.p Dutch!
Props to Big Ben Richardson ( member of "Traffic Jam on guitar! ) Really put serious time and effort bringing back Dutch...producing some fine recordings...thanks Ben...if not for you i might never have had the chance to do that last tour on harp and vocals with Dutch!...also before Dutch got the Gout as he explained to us why he had to stop playing guitar...His Guitar playing was simply ever so tasteful and really totally his own style. I played with B.B King...He told me that in his opinion Dutch Mason was...."The King of the Blues"! Lastly the very first our band had a night off down east on tour...his band blew us away ...it was kick ass electric blues like we had never heard before...or since!
Here is an example of the blues at its best; most of the blues, with notable excaptions; is just reused, reclyed Derivative tunes; like this song sounds alot like the Doors jam "cars pass by my window" witch was deffinatly derivative of other blues tunes 100s of years earlier; THAT BEING SAID NO ONE DOES IT BETTER THEN DUTCH! so much more soul and feeling, like the james brown of the blues, a master composer of synphonic greatness
