Excerpts from Gen. Douglas MacArthur's Thayer Award acceptance speech at West Point, May 12, 1962.
The U.S. Military Academy at West Point's mission is "to educate, train, and inspire the Corps of Cadets so that each graduate is a commissioned leader of character committed to the values of Duty, Honor, Country and prepared for a career of professional excellence and service to the Nation as an officer in the United States Army."

As the son of an Indian soldier let me say this: There is a nobility in the call to arms, a call which unites soldiers no matter what land they belong to or flag they fly. The General's speech embodies that timeless pull.

One of the greatest patriotic speeches in American history. He was a great general, a controversial but inspired leader. He was not always right, but he was never dishonest or disloyal. He is one of a handful of men, including Nimitz, Halsey and Spruance who saw us through that part of WW2. Strangely, as fate had it, he spent but little of his life here in the States, but he was a great American. I was privileged, in the euphoric months after the war, to stand along lower Broadway and watch him pass.

Such poetic and profound thoughts from one of our greatest soldiers. Young students ought to spend a day reflecting on the meaning of these words: "The soldier above all others prays for peace, for it is the soldier who must suffer and bear the deepest wounds and scars of war." I was a 10-year-old girl living at West Point when Gen. MacArthur came to West Point to give this speech and do one more review of the cadets - riding around the parade ground standing in a jeep. My parents were there with the movie camera taking movies that I still have. I was down the street riding my bike. I saw the government limousines approaching and got off my bike and stood at attention, as we were taught to do. The limousines passed by me and I saw the general sitting in the back seat of one of them. I was surprised at how old and frail he looked, and dressed in a civilian suit. He looked at me and I looked at him. He looked sad and I felt like his eyes were conveying to me that no matter how high you rise up in life… in the end you are old and frail like everyone else. That realization influenced me throughout my entire life and helped me make decisions.

I was commissioned through Army ROTC , and graduated from college as a Distinguished Military Graduate and entered the Regular Army in January of 1986. I receive a copy of The Army Officers Guide, I believe it was the 42rd edition, I don't remember. But what I do remember is that this West Point speech by General MacArthur was at the beginning sort of like the prologue of that book. There was no you tube back then or a way to hear it in his own words, but I read it to myself more than once and it was an emotional experience but also a reminder of the weight of leadership. When I finally heard his words many years ago, WOW! If I were one of those young cadets in the audience at West Point in 1962, it would have been an experience I would have remembered for the rest of my life. I am sure many of then drew on that experience and everything else when 3 years later they found themselves in the Vietnam War!

His speech is truly an inspiration to me. My grandfather served under him in Korea, he served in Korea after MacArthur was relieved and Ridgeway took his place. He remained in Korea till the cease fire, and when I was kid all the way up until he passed, he always talked about McArthur his tactics and what he did in Korea and of course his speech. This one along with his return to the Philippines and the surrender of the Japanese aboard the USS Missouri. In fact... he and I listened to this very speech for the last time before he passed, I can tell you he really did felt the Sense of Duty Honor and Country. I always play this to remember him and MacArthur. I still salute him to this very day and I always honor my grandfather with the oath of Duty Honor Country. ⚔️🎩

A moving tribute to General MacArthur. Here is the unedited version of what the General said about Duty, Honor, Country: "The unbelievers will say they are but words, but a slogan, but a flamboyant phrase. Every pedant, every demagogue, every cynic, every hypocrite, every troublemaker, and I am sorry to say, some others of an entirely different character, will try to downgrade them even to the extent of mockery and ridicule." Given the General's repeated emphasis on the core values of Duty, Honor and Country, and -- above all -- his prophesy regarding the "unbelievers," it would be disappointing if West Point removed those words from its Mission Statement.

On this October day, 15 days after terrorists began a second holocaust against the free and democratic Jewish people of Israel, General of the Army MacArthur's Duty, Honor Country speech echoes true for not only the men and women of our armed forces, but for the courageous young men and when who are, as I write this, once again in human history fighting evil. I can not help but think how deeply disturbed must be the spirits of the soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines of the Allied nations who fought so valiantly against evil during the Second World War. How, when that unprecedented slaughter of millions to wipe evil from the earth finished, the men and women of the free countries of this world pledged that never again would we allow such evil to be tolerated. Yet here we are, evil never ends, it is only beaten back for a time. And we are in such a time now when evil is rising again, and the forces of good, justice, and freedom must beat down the minions on evil. Israel is one such battleground, and how the free world cries out for leaders like MacArthur, Patton, Bradley, Nimitz, Halsey, Harmon (Norwich), Cunningham, Tedder, Montgomery, and countless more. But I have always believed, as General MacArthur so eloquently puts it, in the spirit, courage and devotion of the American man at arms. While I pray fervently that this war will not expand, that the free world will dominate the forces of evil by other means, I know in my heart that the men and women of America's armed forces will fight and once again beat back this growing evil. God Speed to all our forces and God bless this nation.

MacArthur's loyalties leading up to WW2 were to the President of the Philippines. MacArthur delayed a proper defense of the islands even after the Japanese had attacked repeatedly. He did this because of the fear of the Philippine President that any aggression by the U.S. forces would lead to an occupation. By the time MacArthur acted to implement the U.S. defensive plan (WPO-3) it was too little too late, and with no time to stock arms nor provisions for those retreating to Corregidor & the Battan peninsula. To make matters worse, MacArthur fled the islands (ostensibly under orders, though no commander would be faulted for refusing such orders when the force was actively engaged in battle and desperately in need of leadership). About the time the remnants of MacArthur's command surrendered and began 3+ years of torture and abuse at the hands of the Japanese, MacArthur was being awarded the Medal of Honor for what amounts to horrible leadership and abandoning his command to their fate. Between this, and MacArthur's orders to fire upon the Bonus Army (Veterans of WW1) in 1932, I can see no reason whatsoever to "honor" Douglas MacArthur. He was a self-serving, self-promoting pompous man, who refused to ever accept any responsibility for his part in the thousands of deaths of those who were unlucky enough to serve under him.

When I was a youngster of 11 my English teacher convinced me to enter a catholic school oratory contest. She selected this speech and we practiced every day for weeks. Committed the speech to memory and completed with other 11 year olds in the state. Didn't win but I'm 67 now and remember like it was yesterday.

"Duty, Honor, Country"... . West Point impressed that upon its cadets. How is it then that Mike Pompeo, West Point Class 0f 1986, graduated first in his class and utterly disregarded the academy's honor code and the oath he took to serve the Nation and protect the Constitution. As US Secretary of State, he served at the pleasure of Donald Trump, facilitating the trashing of that same Constitution and all that is held honorable. How did it happen that none of West Point's hopeful and demanding Honor Code was internalized by an officer, first in his class, who revealed his utter corruption.

As a young man, I swore an oath to protect and defend the Constitution. I understood that it was time to stand for something. The motto of the Army is,”This We’ll Defend”. This nation, its people, and the Constitution. Those who have turned their backs on their sworn oath are without honor. They are not worthy of the heritage they may claim. That they have made common cause with a coward, bully, and a moral failure is disgraceful. Strike their names from the rolls!

General MacArthur was involved in Asian land wars in WW2 and Korea, which ended in 1945 and 1953 respectively with a Japanese defeat and South Korea kept out of the hands of the Kim dynasty. One wonders how MacArthur "violated his own advice" in the 1940s and 1950s when he didn't offer it to President Kennedy until 1961.
