We've seen the photos and brief glimpses of the season finale and we know there will be a cyber-presence coming soon. So this week we're returning to 1981 and one of the most dramatic adventures featuring the Cybermen: Earthshock.
As well as featuring the surprise return of the not-so-jolly giants at the close of episode one, the story delivered a high impact ending with the death of a companion. A young lad called Adric had travelled with the Fourth Doctor and Fifth Doctor, facing foes like the Master, Terileptils and Cybermen. But his story came to a shocking close in episode four of Earthshock, first broadcast 16 March, 1981.
Apparently alone and trapped on a craft hurtling towards Earth, Adric tried desperately to unlock the ship's controls and avert the crash. And just as it looked like he might be able to do that, a Cyberman appeared behind him...
