True story: When the Kickstarter first launched, Dwellings of Eldervale had been costed out as a 3 box solution. And, it was presented as such on the campaign page. The base game was set to have all the Standard edition components. A Deluxe box was set to hold the component upgrades at that pledge level (like the Deluxe Upgrade box for Rise of Tribes). And finally, a box for the Legendary components. There are certainly lots of benefits to that approach. BUT, KICKSTARTER is what made this game possible for you to own. And, Kickstarter overwhelmingly voted with their wallets for a single box Legendary edition. It was not possible to offer both solutions and meet the budget of the project. "The more you know." There are certainly discussions about a smaller box retail version for the future - and a good deal of interest - but nothing is actually in the works on that.

Hi Shea, thought I'd mention this here as well as in the Runthrough comments: I think the fact that players can always perform the actions on a given realm even if they end up losing the unit (or units) to combat is a real selling point for those who are conflict averse or feel that having combat affect whether or not you get to actually perform an action is too much randomness. Again -- great video!

That's a very good point! I do think that combat is still a big factor, but I agree that those who are less competitive won't be as put off by how it works here.

I love the blend of hybrid euro and Ameri-thrash elements. Always being able to take your resources when you land on a spot is great! Dice combat is fun, and yet not to punishing.

Fantastic game. Plays smooth and simple to learn. Love it

Regarding the monster abilities. I think the 'chain' abilities are always in play and affect everyone. It's when the monster is dominated that the effect only benefits its new owner.

Ah, you're quite right. The rulebook is a little unclear, but looking online the designer agrees with what you said. Well, that just makes the game even better then :D

100% agree on the size of games. The boxes and that game on the table are getting bigger but our tables and homes aren’t. And here in the UK our homes and tables are even smaller

I thought the Game Trayz were a great addition. I feel more confident that it will reach the table due to the shortened setup time.

Absolutely agree. The Game Trayz in this case are a “Game Changer” taking this game to the next level.

7:54 - Correction: There is no "Domination specific" Monster abilities. All Monster abilities are active when they are in Eldervale. The chain symbol that tricked Shea into thinking there are "Domination specific" abilities is a fancy asterisk that means "go look in the Appendix to see how this ability plays differently when this Monster is Dominated and now a Unit under the control of a player." Adding this correction simply to combat the misunderstanding shared by others out there. There is a post in the BGG forums with updated rulebook language to help. Apologies for not catching this misunderstanding on Shea's part when first reviewing this video years ago.

I have the base game as well and completely agree on the use of one box for all three versions. This could've been a $40-$50 base game, but instead $99 with Game Trayz and big box. With that said, I do love the Game Trayz but, in comparison, I don't feel they are as crucial as the Game Trayz in Eclipse 2nd edition. I like the game, but without all the deluxe stuff, would prefer a smaller box. Great review!

It occurred to me that if you had been a bit more succinct instead of belaboring a few points (especially about the box size), the video could have been about a third shorter. I could have gotten the same info while using a third less of my time to watch it. 😁

Agree with all of your points, great game, shame about the box size, but it's worth it for me in this case. The battle system was used in Spartacus: A Game of Blood and Treachery. I believe that's getting a reprint soon, you should check it out! The dice are used only in the Colosseum phase and can make for some pretty dramatic swings in battle, which is a lot of fun since everyone not participating is betting on the outcome. :D

100% agree about the OP of monster domination. It does not feel balanced at all. I was considering just taking domination out of my plays of it. I have non-issue with the direct combat and aggressive player interaction. Because you always get the reward on the space before the combat, it does not seem very punishing, you always get something. And even the underworld in some cases gives you things when your units go there. I also agree that the box is ridiculous. I have a finite amount of space for games, and this behemoth took a good chunk out of it. I am tempted to cut the box and shrink it down (as I do not have the minis either) wasting that space just hurts.

About the Monster Domination ... Yes it is pretty Strong and yes one might say OP.. But it is also a risk to send that monster into combat because if your enemy wins he still can choose to go up a element for essentially no action. This actually won me a game because i got like 10 points out of it. I did not focus on fire but he took the fire monster because he thought it was funny to force your opponents to discard ressources , well i won the combat went up in fire and started building in the double fire spot that same turn and bought a fire tableu card suddenly i had more fire than the fire player and shut down his door card also. 10 points for 1 combat where i did not even start it. Sign me up for that :)

I totally agree to your assessment of the game. For me this is a highly interactive hybrid game that has lots of strategic and (mostly) tactical decision and is great for two (and also solo). 9/10 on BGG. However, even though I personally love deluxe components, this really feels like an unnecessarily bloated Kickstarter. Why have 8 player colors in a 4 player game??? Why have 8 different monsters, when they are almost the same anyway (unless they are dominated, which rarely happens). Just throwing in 7 generic meeple monsters without special skills would not only have streamlined gameplay, but also reduced costs and laser-printed monster meeples would be aesthetically more in sync with the rest.

I feel like the cap on scoring adventure cards with dwellings feels weirdly high in a competitive setting. Everyone is going to make 3+ dwellings anyway and probably 4-6 realistically. Who is going to play more than 12 adventure cards? The tiles will run out at 7 trips to the dungeon so that means if one person went to the dungeon all 7 times they only collect 14 cards max and everyone else 0. I may be in the minority but I feel like it should have been a cap on the element type of cards themselves in order to make people more selective with balancing where to dwell vs which cards to get instead of just (I need a purple card so I'll keep getting purple element for my highest elemental powervs what's on the card).

First - I think this is an amazing game, but I agree on the box choice for the standard edition. It's terrible. I specifically got the standard edition just so it wouldn't take up so much space, and now I get the worst of both worlds. I don't have all the stuff, but it still takes up all the space. This is the first time I've considered throwing away the original box (and getting something smaller) and most of the inserts, just so it'd be more likely to hit the table instead of being off in the "too big a box" section of my collection.

It was good enough, but for me there was not enough game in the box for the size of it. Everdell feels like it has more game in it, in a box a fraction of the size - I have the base game of Everdell, and all the expansions, stored in the base box, and one of the expansion boxes, which take up less space than Dwellings had. Using the excuse of “Kickstarter backers [of which I was one] voted for the single box storage” is just shifting blame for a fundamentally bad decision to backers. Don’t get me wrong, Dwellings is a good game. But it’s a game that takes three times the space of a standard box games, and there is not three games’ worth of game in its box. A retail edition in a proper-sized box might be one I would want to own - sold my pledge on because it just took up too much space 😅

Biggest disappointment of 2020. The battle dice system is awful. So many cards with special cases, anything can happen. This game is pure chaos.
@TylerDeLisle
@TylerDeLisle 3 года назад
It's interactive yes, that degree of tactical reacting and adjusting your plan from turn to turn is not for everyone. It's far from pure chaos (though I haven't played at 5). The battle system is excellent when you get used to it, it was specifically chosen to always create a sense of risk and discourage too much combat. If you know you can always lose, maybe you shouldn't pick so many fights. Speaking in general, not to you specifically. There really aren't that many cards with special cases, not sure what you're referring to there. There are maybe 4-6 cards in the whole spell deck that directly affect battle outcomes. The nice thing is you always get the action, you always get something, and you can always withdraw and get your people back and trigger some cards. Not every game is for everyone though of course. This was my favorite game of 2020. I'll admit that I was really underwhelmed my first play, but it has gradually gotten better and better each time I've played it.

@@TylerDeLisle Indeed it feels fantastic when you roll all your dice, your opponent rolls one, and he wins... At least sold it for a good profit.
@mikevanderveen4092
@mikevanderveen4092 3 года назад
@@dddmmm21 This battle outcome was 100% part of the plan by designer Luke Laurie. Dwellings of Eldervale should never be sold to anyone that is not able to abide with such a result. And, losing a single battle - or multiple - will not decide the outcome for those that know how to play. The stratagy goes deeper than needing to have guaranteed wins.
@dddmmm21

@@mikevanderveen4092 Totally agree this game should not be sold. And thanks for explaining the game was made bad intentionally. I thought it was an accident, what a relief. But at least it has monster bases with sound, and we all know that is what makes a great board game.
