Hi, welcome to the channel, where we specialize in filming boardgame runthrough and preview videos that show, rather than tell, what a game really feels like to play.
Great job on this one. I hate when I get surprised like that. I really appreciate how you recognize and respect the design. So much praise even though it isn't for you. This is often how I feel.
Rahdo please explain because for some reason I'm not getting "it"....about the vote...what's the purpose of it both thematically and what do you want to achieve during it/ gain?
as you place your spaceship/workers, you're claiming "power" on different hexes. by the end of the round ,you might have 3 blue power, 1 yellow power, and no red or yellow power let's say. Since you've got a lot of blue power, you want to it to come out on top in the vote, because if blue wins, then every power blue power that you've got is worth 3vp or 4vp. if other players have a lot of blue power, then they want blue to win as well and will probably vote with you. players who have more power with other factions will probably want blue to lose and their preferred faction color to win. theproblem is i think "power" is a terrible term thematically. you should be earning "influence" with the different factions, and whatever faction wins the vote is the most "powerful" and if you've got a lot of influence over a powerful faction, that translates to points. but they call influence power, resources influence, and power they don't have a term. so it makes things thematically confusing a bit :(
IV Studios is in my Top 3 board game developers/producers, and all of their games are basically insta-back for me. I have yet to be let down by any of them, and their component quality is unmatched in the industry other than Stonemaier & Awaken Realms (also in my top 3). Thanks for covering the game and giving your honest thoughts!
@21:00 Komek home world grants 2 power! Not sure if you'll fix this later or not. (All home worlds give 2 power, you can tell by the double line around the edge) Edit: fixed it 2 min later with subtitles
Thanks for the video. This game is not for me, but I’m sure plenty of other people will enjoy it! I think that’s generally true for IV Studios’ games. I guess there is a co-op expansion for Moonrakers, but the barrier to entry is too steep.
The blind bidding at the end of the round sounds very similar to dune imperium. You don’t get your stuff back in dune though, I think you just get reduced rewards unless you come in last.
It does. I’ve had a copy on my shelf for ages that I hope to play one day. Looking forward to watching the rest of your Blink coverage! I started here and I’m only 10 mins in.
Please don't misunderstand me, but I think they should set a higher discount rate to be able to sell these games faster. One of the most criticized aspects of this company has been the high prices of their released games compared to the market. Perhaps it's because the quality of their products is high, I don't know. But ultimately, even with a 25% discount, the prices are still high. I hope other companies in the market won't face these kinds of issues in the future.
Please never stop supporting others who do not have the same privileges and are constantly subjected to injustices. I struggle to understand peoples attitudes.
Bringing any extra message to hobby is a sure way to ruin experience. You're promoting your political or social message on the behalf of the people you're playing with. You may feel yourself righteous while promoting any message but it's pretty fair you lose audience this way.
i can't say i regret taking actions on my channel that cause me to lose viewers who turn a blind eye to the suffering of others and don't like being reminded of it
Thank you for doing this for us :) You were an amazing partner to work with! I think I had tears in my eyes when I watched the final thoughts of Oak for the first (and second) time :)
I love your enthusiasm for a nature theme game. And that chicken cup is adorable! (where did you get it please?) You've just inspired me to have a go at playing Meadow solo, learn it well, and teach it to my husband.
I think the asymmetrical conversation is more applicable to pvp games. Because I think Twilight Imperium and Adrenaline (with its incredibly pertinent expansion) are such that even a small nudge is a big enough difference that you will likely win the better you are at working with that particular play style. In specifics I had many thoughts about the adrenaline expansion because it changed the entire feel for the game. You no longer were just running around picking up random guns and using them to replace with new different guns. Instead you were trying to best utilize your personal unique gun and mechanics (which weren't strictly actually balanced)
I'll never understand the price argument. It would cost us $80 for the 4 of us to go see a movie and that was well before covid. That's for 2 hours of entertainment. $80 for endless hours of entertainment for a boardgame is NOTHING. That's a good deal!
It's so hard to be specialised in expert games... I fully agree with all this, especially on the fact that Delta was a phenomenal game, I was sent the all in box a bit by mistake... Components are amazing, all magnetic boxes are superb, the game itself is so much fun, fluid and brain burning at the same time, I've introduced it to many players and no one ever disliked it ! It's in my top 5.
Its not a big deck of cards at all, but Palm Laboratory has what is essentially a tutorial order for their initial deck. Unwrap and go, pretty neat (especially since palm Island has a horrible default order lol)
Ach well, Vasel’s law will kick in. Every good game gets reprinted as I assume that the developers will get their game back in order for them to sell it to another publisher. And if it doesn’t get reprinted it wasn’t good after all.
i do agree with the first point... for instance it's been a few years since tasty minstrel games sadly closed down, and now you're starting to see some of their greats getting reprints (gold west & yokohama). oh and someone else picked up zhanguo now that whats your game is gone. So given enough time, games do come back around. But i STRONGLY disagree with the 2nd point. so many fantastic games have come and gone that will never see the light of day. glory to rome, hawaii, tournay, merkator, pergamon, olympos, milestones... i could keep listing more, but you get the idea, and i can't complain too much because i've still got them! i'm so lucky i got into boardgaming when i did! :)
@Rahdo, thank you. Yes, fire sale is there to avoid loss to bank. But Us (42 private investors), who make GameBrewer happen DAY1 have lost our stake. WE investors also paid for GB games keep our business healthy. Corvid insane shipping increase with 3 games stranded in China was first nail in coffin, from which we never really recovered. So plz get our games to we can end on a net-Zer0 and keep our pride circulated in the real world instead of a bank reclaim and move to landfill.
Sadly, costs are so high now for everything, and shipping is even worse. There are a few kickstarters I backed which will never deliver because costs went up like crazy. Both covid and the war are ruining so many small companies :/
i guess there's a little more competition for locations and biproducts, but honestly as we played i didn't feel like i was missing out on anything at only 2
RU-vid just recommended me latest Mr Beast video. I watched it and thought to myself -> Didn't Rahdo and Jen watched and enjoyed Survivor TV show (or other somewhat comparable reality TV shows with challenges)? Maybe I am misremembering. Most of Mr Beasst videos are converted to YT format reality TV challenges... There is a difference between "not for me" and "sounds like garbage" .
mr beast has a net worth of 500 millions, so he's just a rich guy doing gimmicks to get more rich. survivor is normal every day people making real human connections and playing to change their lives while often growing as people as they overcome huge obstacles. i'd say they're not really very much alike :)
Im not convinced the solo 'Rival' looks very strong. Im sure he can have some strong turns, not needing cards/money, but in this type of game, he's too easily outsmarted. My first impression. Im curious if theres more to it however.
As an educator, community organizer, and person of color who is deep in the hobby, I appreciate that you do take a stand in an industry that like any other is still inundated with its own systemic issues including race, gender, etc. with who is at the table, who profits, and the political messaging produced in games (looks at original Puerto Rico... yikes). Awareness is a step in the right direction and I've seen so many game designers, content creators, etc. try to make invisible the uncomfortable truths of our realities in the hobby and beyond. I get that it can be a haven to decompress, but some of us don't get to turn that off for any moment of our lives because of the institutions and systems that literally make our lives harder; like, I don't get to walk around without people making assumptions of me based on my race. So yeah, be unapologetic about naming what is Rahdo, because if folks don't want to face the music well then that's not a society I want to live and exist in (nor can I safely, for that matter). None of us are free till all of us are free! Palestine, Congo, Sudan, Haiti, America, and beyond! Everything is political folks, including games.
I know this video is 11 years old old but man, it was EXTREMELY helpful. I'm an avid board gamer and have played my fair share of heavy games but I was just lost with this game, even after watching so many how-to videos. Finally, after finding this gem of a video, I have a great understanding of what to do and why we are doing it. Thank you!!!
every q&a is an excerpt from my monthly podcast, and ep 108 of the podcast was the final one, so it's over and there's only 2 more q&a's to go after this
The problem with this one is that it was manufactured to gather money, it was not engineered from a place of love. If I look at War for Arrakis, I get a wholly different vibe.
