I am sick and just very, very tired of this demonising of the sick and disabled. Apart from anything else, more and more jobs are going to be disappearing to automation and AI and we should be planning for that rather than trying to shoe-horn people into bullshit jobs. All the jobs that are available are either high-end graduate or time intensive zero hours jobs such as delivery drivers etc. Neither of which are suitable for people with health problems.

Agreed. It's the same finger pointing those politicians in the pocket of very wealthy people perform when they demonise immigrants. It's used as a wedge issue and a way to mis-direct the attention of the gullible away from the fact the economic issues we have are due to the behaviour of very rich individuals, politicians and corporations enjoying obscene profits in a psychopathically Machiavellian and unsustainable manner, and instead are due to a small group of very poor people arriving in our country. Wealthy property-owning individuals, investment companies, landlords are to blame as well as government failure to build houses. If immigration were 0%, we'd still have just as bad a housing crisis.

@@DynamicDuoUKthat was my thought, that they would introduce AI. Actually I think disabled people might benefit from that. I rather would been assessed by an objective robot, than a corrupt assessor, who lie their hearts out! Apparently AI better to spotting problems on scan images, then human. Still need a doctor to check and sign, but we have better chance for an early diagnosis. I believe they could easier check our medical records, what DWP until now regularly failed. Probably AI could understand more complex conditions and the impact on a person life. I hope they target the inactive ones who doesn’t have disabilities. You talked about the 900.000 young person who is inactive and that DWP should preferably to look at them. I think that’s another way to jump on the bandwagon. Young people can be seriously ill as well. So just because someone young we shouldn’t assume that they are just lazy. I believe IF they try to solve the root cause, that’s a good approach. Personally I had many health issues from young age, but most of the time I was able and keen to work. Unfortunately in the last few years (started before the pandemic) my condition wasn’t monitored and treated, so I went downhill. Also if they invest in economy and start to build as they said, then likely there will be more job opportunities and not just for the highly educated. Road work, buildings, green technologies need less qualified workers in big numbers. So I think people who was for example stressed over finances, or other job related issues (which we all know effects our family and social life and our health) maybe actually would be happy to go back to work, especially if wages were raised. About DWP layoffs… my mum was a civil servant over twenty years. True, not in England, but she as on the bottom level never needed to worry about that she loose her job. Usually the middle level managers were the ones who were changed. The top level probably survives or fall upwards, so they are safe. About NHS… I worked for the NHS and the level of corruption and wasting money was shocking for me! So there is plenty of money there, they just need to check where it’s going!

Activities such as businesses myopically operating under the discredited concept of shareholder primacy causing stagnant wages and out-of-control wealth inequality, companies driving inflation due to a profit price spiral, aggressively marketed tax avoidance schemes that do not follow the spirit of tax law with offshore trickery such as shell company tricks, 14 years of no investment in infrastructure or services, politicians like Truss trying to gas-light the population into thinking trickle-down economics isn't the ridiculous and intellectually dishonest notion it is. That's just a small list. Also, if Labour starts to go ahead with any austerity measures, we should all treat them with contempt until they read 'Austerity: History of a Bad Idea' by Mark Blythe and change their ill-informed minds.
@dazecm

Also, do any economic inactivity figures filter out people who have entered full-time education, or are groups like this bundled into one figure in order to make it look worse than is claimed by politicians?

Whether, or not wr disagree. They will just bully people and the system will fail, because, getting a job doesn't mean that the individual will keep it, if too ill to work. This will be demonstrated within their work role, and the employer will be forced to get rid of that person, that assuming at all that the employer employs the person in the first place.

A very considerable number of disabled people would actually like to work. Unfortunately the current system often makes it difficult for to do so. For example, even if you have lost a leg, you can till be a productive computer programmer. I have known several deaf factory workers. But they still need a decent wage, and may need help with other costs that the have and others don't. Threatening them with massive penalties if a new start fails is not helpful.

This is why I personally think there needs to be a distinction between disabled and chronically sick. As you pointed out, some disabilities wouldn’t prevent someone from enjoying a career of some sort - but actually feeling sick as a dog every day means you literally can’t do anything. And yet The Powers That Be lump us all in together as if a “One Size Fits All” approach will work.

I think young people are aware that their parents and generations before have given the best part of their lives to working and only just got by. Young people are questioning this and rightly so in my opinion. I think it is appalling how disabled people are treated. Applying for PIP is soul- destroying. It's appalling how can they expect disabled people to work if we can't get out of bed somdays. I do work I'm self employed low income tax credits gone migrated to universal credit Was treated appalling by the woman at the job center I reported her to DWP they changed to someone else she was much better more professional. I can't do more than what I'm doing now infact I want to stop working I think if the government make people who have disabilitys there will be alot of tribunal reporting and solicitors involved and that right there will cost more that what they will be trying to save . Also it is cruel and inhumane to assume all disabled people can hold down a job So what happened to stopping the work assessment isn't that needed to asses capability so he's already going against what he said to get people's votes

If we taxed income from no work via capital gains, at the same rates as wages from hard work, it would raise £14 billion a year. Minimum. More than enough to avoid any cuts to welfare, and more than enough to scrap the two child benefit cap 6 times over. If we raised corporation taxes to what they were in 2009 and added an extra £80 a week to £500 a week tax on incomes of £125,000 to £500,000 + it raises £48 billion a year. A stock market financial transaction tax of 0.025 pence per transaction raises at least another 3 billion per year.

So are the government forcing people who definitely can’t work, due to long term disability back to work? Or just the ones that want to work? And what about the Green Paper,is this still going ahead?
@DynamicDuoUK
@DynamicDuoUK Месяц назад
The green paper ends at the end of July and then it has to go through an assessment period. Labour will then decide if they want to use this or not as this was a Tory policy and they will also then decide what if anything to change, what impact it has and how long it would take to make these changes. They could completely blow it out of the water and say no. It's not what they want and it doesn't meet their criteria. Previous governments wanted the long-term and disabled back into work. However, it has also been proven recently that the labour government also would like those on long-term sickness and disability back into the workforce. There has been proof of this lately, they are now keeping a quiet ear on this but expect future announcements within the next 30 days or just after the budget.

The Tories are an extreme example of this, with members drawn disproportionately from over-privileged families with a public-school education, which are basically trauma factories. Little wonder working class people view the country as a playground for the wealthy when those who make up the government are those very same wealthy individuals. Most if not all of our industry has either been sold off or moved abroad, to create jobs you have to create businesses, with the amount of tax that businesses have to pay they won't be able to afford wages. Look around your towns and see the amount of closed stores, starmer has already put 8k out of a job by closing the north sea drilling! It's common sense that you need businesses to thrive to be able to employ. Disabled people should not have to worry about working, my daughter is a full time 24hr carer for her daughter who is severely disabled and it would be impossible for her to work, not her choice of course, but there are thousands like her too. If we stopped taking care of the rest of world then we might be able to concentrate on our own people who really need the help.

In 2017 which I can recall off my head in detail, Facebook paid no UK tax but HMRC did pay them £25,000 to advertise on there to tell people to pay their taxes. Vodaphone owed the UK 10 billion in tax. It was cut to 2 billion over a dinner with HMRC's executives at the time. If I use my business to buy a £1 million painting, and sell it in 18 months for £1.1 million, I have £100,000 profit and owe £20,000 in tax. If I am self employed and go out and WORK MY BALLS OFF to earn £100,000 I pay 40% in tax, at least. -.- If I earn £50,000 a year I pay circa 9% of my income in national insurance. If I earn £1 million a year I pay 2.5% of my income in national insurance. The top 1000 richest people in the UK saw their personal wealth go from 700 billion £ to 1.5 trillion between 2019 and 2024, while the rest of us were demolished by covid and inflation. How much more thriving do you want... This country does not have a growth problem, it has a wealth distribution problem, that is built into capitalism by default. As for getting new business and productivity going, why in gods name would I ever invest in better production or start a business or move a business to a nation whose people cannot afford to buy more of the crap I produce year over year and are in fact declining in the amount of crap they can buy year over year and having been for decades due to the rewards and incentives of capitalism itself over time.

What are the figures , for those claiming PIP that already work , either part time , or full time , the problems are , the government needs to beef up , protections within the workplace . Because , many major employers , still trying to force those with disabilities out of the workplace , being bullied , harrrassed even into taking more examinations , more meetings , pressure to take ill health retirement , even though some disabled need to continue working due to financial personal situations , like rent . Debts , normal bills , mortgages , vehicle running costs , because some disabled , are on lower end of PIP even though they perhaps cannot walk with our aids so need transport , cannot even access public transport , facilities or be cause of timetables , for work unsuitable , more employees rights for disabled need beefing up , people even with ,entail health issues even continually chased out or they are relocated adding to costs very unreasonable actions by some employers. Skirting around the equality act ,but saying they made reasonable adjustments when clearly have not done , it's still indirect and possible direct discrimination process, harassment and even possible failures of duty of care. Even causing further additional harm on top of pre existing conditions , again clear breach but it corporations etc. Do not care , , even , throwing disabled people into situations which could lead to possible homelessness , for whole families. , more protections. Are needed from doctors , specialised teams involved in workplace. Situations and ,pre help , for union representation stinger safeguards for disabled employees who maybe placed under constant pressures , even like verbal comments by management. Not backed up by written statements but still causing further stress and harm. , and worst is disabled still have to deal with all this on top of discomfort or pain with their disability flavour really need to think about this very seriously protecting more disabled rights within the workplace , , some employers and management only pay lip services to equality act provisions. , not keeping disabled safe at all but puking on more harrasment,
