🎞 STORY: A new science was introduced to me by a unique group of guys. DXing is their life long passion and it involved some laptops, pocket size radio receivers, and very long wires (500 meters) in two directions. For six days, they used Tranquility (our Airstream travel trailer) as the communication lab to pursue their passion of finding distant radio stations.
DXing is the art and science of listening to distant stations (D=distance X=xmitter or transmitter)

You fellas really sum the hobby up very nicely and the explanation about DXing hotspots around the world such as Cappahayden is excellent . I can attest to all this as I have DXed from Newfoundland as a resident here for the past 21 years. Thanks guys !

A wonderful video and it was so nice seeing you guys. So many smiles at what you were talking about. It is almost a mirror of my years dxing in Australia and now here in Europe. Cappahayden sounds a wonderful place to listen from. it is a wonderful and unique hobby. Trying to explain it to friends, family and work colleagues is not easy. I always say I'm off on Secret Mens Business. As for my wife, she experienced a Dxpedition on our honeymoon and even helped with the beverage. That was many years ago and has never been repeated. These days I mix with the Belgian and Dutch dxers and dx on a farm close to the French/Belgian border. 400 - 450m is about our limit. We target Asia, Nth America, Pacific and of course Sth America. Our marker station in the early evening is (You guessed it) VOCM. If St Johns is in early its usually an indication conditions are good. Good luck with the fishing into the future. I would love to see a follow-up video of the beverages and surrounds. A very enjoyable watch. Thanks.

Thanks for sharing this MeHi. I presume these guys are licensed Amateur Radio Operators, but not necessarily if they are only receiving/listening. There are a lot of folks who listen to “shortwave” transmissions from all over the world, but what these guys are doing is not as common. FWIW, Amateur (HAM) Radio is a fascinating hobby, with many aspects, and many more people involved worldwide than non-hams realize. (The “death” of ham radio has been forecasted for years, but the hobby is still alive and growing.) Chasing very low power signals, both Receiving (Rx) and Transmitting (Tx) is known in the ham radio hobby as “QRP”. Newfoundland, of course, specifically Signal Hill in St. John’s, has an important place in the history of wireless communications. 73s, Bruce K8BRF
