In January 1959, nine Soviet college students were killed under mysterious circumstances while hiking through the Ural Mountains in what's now known as the Dyatlov Pass incident.
On Jan. 31, of that year, 23-year-old ski hiker Igor Alekseievich Dyatlov and his team of eight experienced ski hikers from the Ural Polytechnical Institute embarked on a journey to reach the peak of Otorten, a mountain in the Northern Urals.
None of the hikers were ever seen alive again.....
Special thanks to Sara for researching and sending me this script! Much appreciated my friend.

The blinking old photos with the slight facial expressions is such a subtle but masterful stroke in the telling of this horrific story. I wish Hollywood would take notice of your technique. The subtlety and murky elegance of horror over a blatant jump scare is what really takes my breath away!

Celia Lovett He is getting really good with that program. At the start we got blinks...but now I see little mouth movements and eyebrow lifts. It IS more subtle, but also more complex as he expands the levels of expression he applies. It is like actual personality is being introduced to animate the photo, in a more than simply manual, one size fits all manner. That is real Oddie magic...he always gets the feels right, and he keeps getting better. I would love to see someone like Netflix take him on, but they only look at material brought to them by agents or directors they already have a relationship with. He is doing really unique art with the way he puts together a story...I fully agree.🖤🇨🇦

@@ObsoleteOddity here in the United States the Bigfoot researchers always try to say that Sasquatch or Bigfoot are mainly peaceful as long as you stay out of their areas where they are located! Not true at all! Research the disappearances in our national parks! I live in Louisiana and I work for a Billboard company so I travel back and forth between Louisiana Mississippi and Arkansas and Texas! I do my own research on the creatures and the Sasquatch up north are very different from the Southern Bigfoot! The ones here in Louisiana are very aggressive and you don't want to run across one by yourself! Another thing is that if you see one I guarantee you that there are at least one or two more creatures hiding and circling your position! I was run out of the Atchafalaya Basin by at least two of the creatures! They basically made enough noise to let me know that they were not happy that I was there and I had my 8 year old grandson with me so I made sure I got out of the woods as fast as possible! The 2 creatures followed me breaking trees and grunting and very heavy breathing and even a couple of growls! My daughter bought a house on a new road and only a couple of houses far away from her! This is supposed to become a new neighborhood! At the end of her street and across from her home are woods and Swamp! My grandson and myself were in the woods at the end of the street! My daughter had called me one day because she was walking in the woods with her children and she came across a 18 inch smeared foot prints with four toes! So she called me to come out there and take a look! I always carry my 44 magnum pistol! I had been there a few times before the incident happened with my grandson and myself! That day we were run out of the woods I made sure that I had my Pistol in my hand while we were exiting the woods! I've heard many times that the creatures know what guns are and I figure that's the only reason why the creatures didn't get any closer to us! I never saw them but I could hear them walking and following us! Btw there are no bears in this area! The biggest creatures living back there are wild hogs and deer! I know the sounds that those animal's make and the grunting and growling and the breathing were not any of those animals!!!! The Yeti is considered to be a lot more aggressive than it's American cousins but I think that depends on where you have a encounter! Hopefully one day we will have the concrete proof that we need to put this myth to rest and hopefully one day we will have the body of one in a museum somewhere that we can all visit!!!!

This is so true. One very snowy + freezing cold November, windchill of -20F (-29°C), I was deer hunting. My eye lashes had icicles! Thought to myself, this is so not worth it. As I started back towards cabin, I tripped and fell over a log. I was tired, no longer cold, and did not want to get back up. So, thought, I'm just going to rest here a few minutes. As I laid on the snow, I was so calm and closed my eyes. Then I heard by brother in law call out in a panicky voice. He just happened to return to cabin and was going back out to hunt til dusk with the others. Had he not seen and woke me, I likely would not be commenting now. Strange how hypothermia 'warms' your body.

About two years ago I saw an updated special on this story, I believe it was on National Geographic. A man who was on his deathbed was on the show, and with only days to live at the most, he revealed a lot of unknown information. He was one of the very first people in the first group of the search party to get there. He said that they were all informed that if anything they saw, heard, witnessed or experienced was repeated, "they would be dealt with". Incredibly, he said that the military HAD already been there, but then flew in, in helicopters as though they were just getting there, and there were so many footprints in the snow it was ridiculous! One interesting thing that he said was that the military was VERY paranoid and constantly watching the wood line as though they were terrified of something, he did say that was why the investigation was cut so short: some Soviet soldiers were actually defying direct Soviet commands: in other words they would rather be killed by their government than whatever they thought was in those woods. But the most damning thing he said was that when he had been younger, during WWII, for a short time he had worked for the KGB. He said when he was inspecting near the tent, it was obvious that the bodies had been tampered with and repositioned, but at one point he looked down and saw something that made his blood run cold. Next to one of the bodies was (I could be wrong about the actual object, but the facts around it are factual) a KGB issued cold weather boot cover for the extreme cold. He grabbed it and put it in his pocket. In the interview he showed it to the camera, and it was indeed confirmed to be authentic to that time. Another thing left out is that the head of the party did indeed get into a heated discussion with a group of the Manzi tribe; the Manzi were warning them that if they got to their destination; they would not live! The Manzi had nothing to do with the incident, they wouldn't step foot on that ground... until they began to realize they were wrongfully becoming suspects. On a sad note, many of them were tortured by the Soviets to get information and of course got none because they were innocent. But they obviously knew something! Great video, I am not saying your video was wrong, just filling in a few blanks. No disrespect intended my very good friend. As always, keep up the "odd" work!

🤔. Now I’m not saying this DIDN’T happen to him. The soviets were/are an extremely secretive lot, and sometimes they don’t even know why, I’m guessing. But....LOTS of people give false deathbed confessions, for some reason. Fake Billy the Kid and John Wilkes Booth are two that come immediately to mind🤷‍♀️. I’m sure there’s many, many more. People take deathbed “confessions” as gospel, for some reason. Just sayin’.

I'm a retired combat veteran, and I've seen and heard some pretty messed up things in my life. One thing I think I've always kind of prided myself on is my lack of fear in situations that most others would be petrified in. I currently live in the Philippines and because of how hot it gets, it's common for us to pull the curtains open and leave the front door open (almost all doors here are screened) so that cooler air, should there be any, can come in and circulate... Keep in mind this is an extremely safe neighborhood, and there have been zero incidents of any kind, be it petty crime, or the like. You my friend have done something with this video that has me completely shaken. I've drawn my curtains closed, closed the door and dead bolted it, and you've made me paranoid to the point that I won't turn my back to the door. You sir, are brilliant. Job very very well done. I had heard of Dyatlov Pass before, but never researched it at all. I'm proud to say this is the very first thing I've ever watched on it, and man alive, you have me terrified. So much for sleep.

I was 9 years old when this occurred, and I recall listening to the adults discussing the little information that was allowed out to the world press. I remember the most prevalent thoughts among my Grandparents and their formerly Russian neighbours centred on the Cold War, which was definitely being waged at the time. They thought the military was testing new weapons in the isolated area, and the hikers were collateral damage or intentional Guinean pigs. Both America and the USSR were doing experiments with sound waves and their potential as weapons...much like ultrasound is now used to drive rodents from a house. There was thought that there was a specific low tone that could disrupt the internal organs. Both countries were also testing in air detonations of different bomb types...both nuclear and conventional, there was talk of hydrogen bombs and a neutron bomb that would kill living organisms but not destroy buildings...they wanted to see the damage levels from arial detonation at various heights above ground. I’m sure that a bomb detonating over your tent might lead to panic...I know I would be wanting better protection than an already compromised tent. I do not recall any discussions of a Yeti or Bigfoot...they seemed pretty sure it was military, and they could easily have tried to trigger and control an infrasound weapon under development...there were a LOT of strange weapon concepts under Eisenhower and Nikita Khrushchev...including ESP and other metaphysical techniques, (my Gran was very interested in these studies). A lot of the information and photos we have today were suppressed at the time either for security reasons or to avoid an international embarrassment to the USSR through the unexplained deaths of 9 experienced mountain hikers in their territory. From the little that was released, it appeared to be death by misadventure, and Khrushchev closed the investigation rather abruptly citing a “compelling natural force”. My Granther and the neighbour man didn’t buy the official story for a minute, and would have very animated discussions while I quietly eavesdropped from behind Granther’s chair until caught by Gran and sent off to bed. It is because of those overheard conversations...lubricated with vodka (Granther and the Neighbour man...not me!), that this particular case has stuck with me, and still draws me into speculation as access is granted to some of the more primary sources...the group diary, and the investigation files...(at least select ones) they closed the investigation after only a month with no clear cause assigned. This Historical case by you Oddie has brought it back into my curiosity zone again, so if I should discover anything really interesting I will let you know. Once more into the breach!...I do love a challenge.🖤🇨🇦

I have had a long held interest in the 'Dyatlov Incident' and have read or viewed most of the material available on it. Your summary of teh story was excellent and obviously well researched. Some of the images you showed I haven't seen before and you obviously dug deeper to find images from other trips that Dyatlov and his colleaugues had done. Much of the Russian military record of involvement still remains top secret (which in itself is strange) however recently some was released including diary records from one of the expeditioners suggesting they were being 'stalked' or followed in the 24 hours prior to the event, even to the point that on the fateful night they camped 800m out of the forest tree line to minimise the forest cover a stalker might use. I understand the Russian military files also admit they were there on the site shortly after the incident occurred (same night) which is also supported by the fact some odd pieces of military kit (a gater) was found in the tent which in 1959 would have been unatainable by civilians. The Karman Vortex theory sounds very interesting and should be explored some more in light of the recently available records perhaps. Thank you for a first class film clip

While it could be due the fact they were exhausted, experiencing extremely bad weather, and couldn't hike another mile on those conditions....It's still an odd choice for experienced hikers to chose that location. i think the government is connected to this. the government has so much power that they can shut down any case and or deny anything that they are involve in. theyre dirty and hide so much and they dont give a shit bout their own people like these young students. they found radiation everywhere and that right there is a given. radiation is connected to aliens and aliens are connected to the government. so therefore they all must be working or doing some testings. so these kids prolly unknowingly mustv maybe stepped into their own fence and went ahead kill them. look up phil shneider he will tell u the truth on the government and aliens. this case will never be solved why? becus its governmental shit.

There is no mystery honestly - Dyatlov wasn't experienced enough, so the group set the camp in the wrong place, when the snow storm began snow started to fall on the roof of a tent and eventually the tent fell with the snow and injured a few students with its weight, the group had to move back fast but it was too cold and there weren't enough people to carry the injured, they had to split up - some stayed with the injured and some kept going to get help, but eventually decided to make fire and rest, fell asleep and died of the cold and tireless (it explains why they had some burns). The postmortem injures (missing eyes etc) were made by birds and other animals. (There is a good video with the reconstruction of this event made by experienced ski hiker; it's among the popular videos (it's called Перевал Дятлова. Тайна раскрыта or smth like that, it's in Russian but you can try using subtitlesand translate them into english). The government here is not the best one but in this case it has nothing to do with anything. Just an accident really.

The Yuri Yudin's incident with the police is strange to me. He was taken into custody for singing too loud, was detained and released and soon after, got sick and couldn't go. Russia or not, why would you take him into custody for such a small thing and then he got sick and couldn't go? Were these people used as test subjects for an experiment and Yuri Yudin was warned and made an excuse to leave the party? It would not be the first time a government experiment on it citizens, this is the first thing that caught my attention from the start and the only strange thing to happen on the trip leading to the deaths of these people. Or were they conducting experiments that went wrong and Yuri Yudin deliberately caused the incident with the police to get out of going because he was scared? Thank you for a most intriguing story!!!

Simon 's my Gran was a young woman in Soviet Union in those days. If you were singing too loudly but were not aggressive or drunk the police would have just told you to keep it down (most likely). If you were drunk you would have been taken to the cells to sleep it off. For the drunken disorderly you would have gotten 15 days imprisonment. So Gran agrees with you.

Simon 's This is a very interesting point you raise, his leaving has always been sped past as being irrelevant. Some of the men were engineers and involved with the nuclear program...facts withheld at the time. I wonder what Yuri’s job was...maybe he was grooming for KGB or was involved with the nuclear or space programs and was essential to the government...so they removed him from the doomed team. Yes. And I would bet you money, that it was a bear or Yeti that has been exposed to nuclear radiation from the Kyshtym Nuclear Disaster only two years earlier. That could alter how the animal thinks, and make it really dangerous, and strong. A dangerous predator is the only thing that fits everything. Cutting the back of the tent, running for their lives in panic, thereby running long and far without their boots even . . . take a look at my other comments for a list of everything, but it's the only thing that fits - the injuries requiring massive strength, the people attacked having radioactive material on them... Everything. There's even a journal that's since been released, where, in the last 24 hours they complained that they were being stalked. The only thing that didn't fit was the lack of prints, and that appears to be a lie, because a witness on his deathbed (who was told to keep his mouth shut about anything he heard or saw) said the Soviet military was already there when they first showed, and the ground was trampled - you couldn't see any print definition.) He also said the soldiers were terrified about something in the woods, and some refused to come (risking death).
@unidentifiedguy8253
@unidentifiedguy8253 3 года назад
@@wvrjl You've been playing to much Fallout and/or Hulk films. Animals and humans don't get "really dangerous and strong" from radiation exposure. He covered the Yeti theory and predatory theory and pointed out there were no tracks whatsoever. Your theory involves being chased from the tent, attacked, and very limited amounts of radioactive material being left on the victims, but amazingly, no bite marks, no footprints in the snow, and no explanation for those with burn marks on them. If you are going with this theory, at least say it was the gorilla from "Rampage" though.

The best one I heard is that there is photo evidence that the campers used a make shift wood stove in their tent....they had cooked food and alcohol in their system. Combining a hazardous stove and alcohol in an enclosed tent is a recipe for disaster. Malfunctioning or just clumsiness lead to fire/smoke which lead to cutting their way out. After that, the environment finished them off.

@veritasetutilitas5432
@veritasetutilitas5432 5 лет назад
The perplexing part of this tragedy is that the 9 hikers were at some point experiencing a mass psychotic event. For these hikers to cut the tent from inside and leave it underdressed for the conditions would mean that whatever the threat was had to have been experienced by all of them, whether real or imagined. An explanatory theory of infrasound would work for this part of the event, as would hallucinatory effects of magic mushrooms. However what happens next can't be explained this way as the bodily injuries would not be expected to be caused from a mass hallucination. That is where a separation of theories happens. The injuries some of these hikers experienced almost reach the paranormal level. The fractured skull that the hiker making his way back to the tent endured must have happened relatively close to where he was found on the mountain. What makes this tragedy so compelling is that no one theory adequately explains what happened to the entire group leaving our imaginations to take over
@leannsfearcocktail9420

This story is crazy and sad. The only reason they would flee the tent is if their death was imminent. After watching your episode I read up on this case and watched a few more documentaries. Even though Russia finally released information about this case in 90s I am certain some of their findings will never be released to the public. This story is baffling. If I added all my theories about what happened my comment would turn into a book. I wish I could chat with you or someone interested in this case, somone with theories their own. This was another great episode... well done!

This was a great treat . It's cold in Durban and it fitted the theme of this video . Brilliantly done Oddie and Sara . With regards to theories we must remember that this was the Soviet union and many cases were covered up . Access to information was controlled by the party leadership. Like you I find it difficult to understand how they could ascertain which footprints belonged to the hikers . I also find it strange how they could be so sure of the time of the deaths since the bodies were discovered at least three weeks later in a cold climate . The fact that there was an attempt to build a fire outside of the tent prices that something or someone scared them enough not to want to return . We may never know . Hope you enjoyed your holiday Oddie .... hmmmm did you say red light district video ?

Another translation of the the name of the mountain from Mansi to English: "Do not go there."

I also heard that it was called by that name, Dead Mountain, because of few animals to be hunted there.

I'm pretty sure it actually means mountain where nothing grows in Mansi. The others just fit the narrative better.

This is just the craziest story I've ever heard! You did such an incredible job with the story thank you! I've heard about it before however, you explained it with such great detail.. not to mention the photographs were incredible! I can't imagine what those poor nine people went through that night!!!! Literally must have been hell on Earth.

This is the best video on RU-vid regarding this part of history. It is well presented, and the narration is clear and concise. Most all other narrators sound like dimwitted robots.

There was a movie made, based on the hikers in the Ural mtns. 5 American students flew to Russia to investigate the mystery of what happened 2 those hikers, only to meet an unfortunate fate of their own. Thanks 4 bringing this 2 us. I've always been interested in the story & what exactly happened 2 them. It teaches us to have a healthy respect 4 certain things. Lastly, thanks 4 differentiating Celsius to farenheit!👍👍💯
