An account as to why the genteel ladies present were shocked - after their gaze wandered to the corpse's nether regions.
For all those morbid romantics out there, this one will definitely be right up your catacomb!
We start off with an abbreviated history of Lord Byron followed by a detailed account of the exhumation of his crypt in the 1930s.
We shall reveal why the delicate females gasped in awe and fell into a delirious swoon as the great poet’s coffin shroud was removed.
Plus an exclusive - you will get to view my very own mausoleum!
Oddie Beau's ODDNESS Urban exploration & famous historical features! vintage crime cases & eccentric people from the past! ...and other weird stuff :) ....a dusty store window, filled with ancient alluring oddities. Once you've entered, you'll never want to leave. Quality over quantity.

“Always laugh when you can, it is cheap medicine.” ― Lord Byron (subtitles in all major languages!! - If you'd like me to add one, just ask me) This video was uploaded to Patreon 2 years ago - all my new content gets posted there first, so I don't have to bow to the YT censors. My patrons support my work so I can continue. But the older videos like this one, eventually come here.

This is great and may I say absolutely hilarious, I can’t say I have ever laughed so hard about the exhumation of any corpse (well I don’t think I’ve laughed about any until now), this narrative is great and humorous, listening to you make little comments about his bits and bobs, the fact that everyone was obsessed about his naughty bits, “hung like a pony” still makes me giggle, thank you Oddie, I hope we get to enjoy more of these, I love this!!! Now's the 200th anniversary of Lord Byron's death. There should be a video on him next. A very controversial, perplex and messed up life. Oddie, do you believe the rumours about him, and Augusta's relationship were true and the one about Augusta's daughter Elizabeth Medora Leigh being the product of that relationship?

Having quite recovered from my bout of faintness, I must ask: I have always heard that Byron wanted to be buried with his favorite dog, a Newfoundland which died several years before The Man, himself. What's the story there? It has for years made me like Byron even better than just his work (and adventures).
@ObsoleteOddity
@ObsoleteOddity 5 месяцев назад
Byron's first Newfoundland dog, Boatswain, had died of rabies in 1808 at Byron's home, Newstead Abbey; Byron had nursed him despite the danger, and wrote a poem to him. Byron had wished to be buried with Boatswain in the Abbey garden, but this was denied him.

Aren't the leaded shells soldered shut to preserve the bodies? How did they get thru that? I doubt it was restored. They should have left him alone. Interesting story tho. First off...I would hope that you & dear wife live a long, long & healthy wonderful life❤🙏🙏🙏🙏 Whatever way you want to do your wonderful videos is fine with me ! Maybe you could have a staircase-- folks walk down & then your room could be large - like a big basement. And have a ray gun to ZAP anyone trying to mess with your building ect. & they'd go up in smoke-- that way no smelly bodies 😊 Some movie Robin Williams was in -- they had a computer type headstone that would show your life story if I remember right. Having had a Scottish grandfather to save money I'd probably be buried in a Vet cemetery for free😊. But my picture & military info is in the woman's Vet building in Washington. The above ground bit -- sooner or latter the building will fall into disrepair -- like the writing on headstones right? If I have any $ when I die I'd rather it go to say an animal rescue shelter or a fire or a department or police department -- or something like that then pay some rich cemetery folks who may or may not keep up the cemetery. 🎩. \ 💀 Your best 'asset' is your beautiful loving soul -- 'that' will live on forever.

Thank you so much for your kind words Ruth, it’s so nice of you. Yes, it’s a waste of money gravestones and Mausoleums - far that the money goes to animals. Hope you’re having a great start to the week!

@@ObsoleteOddity Thank you so much for our little chats here. I can see why folks want headstones ect -- so they can be remembered & their loved one's can still feel like there loved ones are there (body is anyway) I can see that. It's just a personal choice -- that folks and their families should be able to make. I didn't mean to sound cold hearted. Hopefully our sprite moves on & we can have new adventures.

@@ObsoleteOddity Have a wonderful week as well. I love hearing your sweet Kitty in the back ground. @ObsoleteOddity
@ObsoleteOddity Месяц назад
@RuthShelton-ou4id you didn’t sound coldhearted at all Ruth, everyone has different tastes and choices when it comes to their own burial or cremation. I personally just think it’s a waste of money and space, once the vehicle that we use is no longer able to be useful to us, it goes back to the Earth - but we still live on, and that is why we should rejoice. But I certainly understand that some people need to have a focus for their grief, and something that they can remember their loved ones by

It is interesting that Sir Richard Francis Burton , made a few brief but written remarks about Byron. An excellent documentary, would be about Sir Richard Burton and his tomb at Mortlake cemetery.in London. There is an engraved silver disc placed in the ground behind Burtons tomb. I placed it there in 2012.

My comment is going to cover two comments. I apologize in advance. 😊 I have to say that I have met a man who was built like the proverbial ’horse’. Don’t be jealous ladies. Unless you’re built like the ‘mare’, there’s a lot that goes to waste. 🤭 And, Oddie, I thought I was the weird one because of my plans for my funeral. I’d like to have party hats, horns, and favors given to everyone as they arrive. AND, I want to hire someone to dress up as ‘The Grimm Reaper’ and come into the church around the middle of the service and say, “The party’s over. I’m here to get her.” The have him burst out laughing and say, “Naw. Just kidding! Let’s party!!” Have him put on his party hat, start blowing his little horn, and encourage everyone else to do the same because I lived to help people find a reason to laugh. So, one last laugh with me, please. 😃😃

Definitely some LOL moments on this one! As for old time alcohol "embalming" you are correct in that it wasn't arterial embalming like we have now. (such a procedure didnt exist yet, even intravenous meds for living people). It was more like what we think of with medical preservation or samples in formaldehyde (or your Biology teacher with frogs in a jar lol). A body would be exsanguinated and then put in high grade alcohol. For this to truly work you need medical grade alcohol (99%) but at the time they would have had only about 90%, and I have no idea what was used for Byron. But buying this much "moonshine" or similar put it out of reach of the average person.

I have to be honest. I loved it. I especially find it humorous that we always chuckle at the same time. Heehee. But I have a story that make him look small. I know of a man, in the Town where i grew up, that definitely is bigger man. Get my drift?!! His nickname, given to him by his male co-workers is (drum roll please) : Rug Beater. Because he could beat a rug with it. Heehee. 🤭 I'm so sorry if I offended anyone. There's a more graphic way of telling that story. I just thought it was a perfect time to tell it.😏 Hugs,🤗 from Woobie in Massachusetts USA 😉

I had a high school field trip to the local mortuary (the biggest business in that tiny little town). The mortician was very passionate about his work and we enjoyed it, surprisingly. He showed us photos where a flood had unearthed a cemetery and sent caskets floating downriver where some had broken open. I believe it was the 1930s. He was quite proud to show how the bodies looked freshly preserved but many had been buried for decades. After we got past the omg-that's-a-dead-body shock, we could appreciate that he was absolutely right. One kinda half sat up. One had one eye open. But otherwise they looked incredibly preserved. A really bizarre practice if you think about it, though.

Well, finally byron is famous for something other than his rather dubious poetry, which I never liked. Rasputin's relics were kept by three women from the Russian court, who resided in Paris, and an article from the 1970's measured it as excessive even in metric measurements. That story would be worth chasing up for your next foray.

I prob dont care how I will end up - but my hubbie wants to be buried in a Tardis.!! Yes I was surprised too at the condition of his body. This wouldnt be the first time coffins have been opened to look at "the mystery of whats in pants" thing. That made me laugh, at university as part of my medical science degree, human variability in anthropology was a major part of our degree and has been a long held academic interest of mine. The reports of the impressive schlong of Byron appear not not be apocryphal. But like everything, that too is subject to the same huge natural variation. Unlike men our pair of assets are difficult to hide their size. I can understand the curiosity tho of what he actually looked like. I wonder if there are photos of his body in its state when it opened..
