The last step before applying finish, in this case the most important is to match the original color of the '63 Gibson Mastertone. I have trouble with the lousy bottles the dye comes in and it literally gets all over me. This isn't necessary when just using any old nice looking color, but I go to great lengths to match the old color. This is especially time consuming with vitreous colors that build up in layers, as you apply a coat, let it dry and repeat 3-4 times to see what you get. I'll take you through multiple days of work in about 30 minutes, and the next video we apply it to the banjo neck. Don't miss it!

I've used syringes to get exact amounts when mixing Transtint. Once you determine your ratios its fairly easy to recreate the mix.

Just finished watching yet another fascinating video by Dave B. 😄 Wow, I had NO idea how much time and effort was going to go into this project... You are an amazing craftsman, and it is an honor to have you put so much work into this incredible instrument (although it is a '62 if I'm not mistaken...😉) Can't wait to see the finished product AND to see and hear YOU playing it!

This has been a wonderful and informative series and I am on the edge of my seat to see the final result! One constructive comment - the lighting in the section where you applied the color was dark enough to make it difficult to get a clear view of how the color was laying out. I can only imagine how difficult it is to set up lighting and cameras while still trying to get real work done, but the information and techniques are valuable, and your efforts are greatly appreciated!

My week has been made! This is all so exciting. Learning so much and I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge. Your humor and easy-going attitude makes me want to talk with you! Might I suggest transferring the stain from annoying bottle to something more hefty like small glass jar (like for toy models) and using a cheap disposable plastic dropper to get precise drops? May not be that serious to be accurate, but would be less messy!😂 Can’t wait for the next video!

Instead of pouring the lacquer straight from the can, why not use a turkey baster, instead?
