His family wants answers and so do many other Australian mums and dads who want to know why their sons and daughters are dying for perfect skin. Rahni Sadler spoke with his devastated family.

Having acne can also lead to depression tho. It can also lead to scaring and disfigurement. Accutane and birth control can be life changing for some people. No one who’s currently struggling with acne will tell you that they want “perfect skin”, just normal skin. They are trying to make it seem like some crazy teenagers risking their lives to get rid of some pimples. They are completely ignoring the fact that acne is absolutely detrimental to someone’s psychological health and the fact that the risks of developing a serious side effect is extremely rare. Of course all patients should be warned of the side effects and be monitored by professionals, but demonizing birth control and accutane is also really absurd.
@ellie4601
@ellie4601 3 года назад
It wasn't a great article at all - not sure why they spent the whole segment demonising medication... instead of the professionals who prescribed it and "cared" for these people. Maybe if they had done their research and looks for alternative options, this never would have happened.

It's all the fault of the prescriber. Why? Because in my case the dermatologist spent 10 solid minutes walking through all the side effects of Roaccutane and at every monthly catch up, they did a mental health check because depression and suicidal thoughts are a known side effect. The pharmacist also heavily emphasised the side effects before handing over the medication.

@NotLikeUs17
@NotLikeUs17 3 года назад
You’re 1000% correct. I’m a licensed nurse and one of my responsibilities includes patient education, reinforcing what the doctor has already gone over with the patient when starting new medications, treatments and/or other regimens. A good pharmacist will also go over the possible side effects and/or adverse reactions as well before releasing the medications. All of these stories are so tragic and quite simply could of even been avoided in a couple of cases had the MDs involved been more competent in recognizing the adverse effects of these medications. This is equivalent to someone having an anaphylactic response and the doctor doing absolutely nothing. Very scary.

Patient confidentiality caused the therapist not to tell the family? Maybe its just where I live, but patient doctor confidentiality here can be broken if someone intends to harm themselves or others. I know because it actually happened to me, and my parents were called and informed that i was a danger to myself. I am glad you are ok (for now) but also, as a heads up: there are studies that show that the serious permanent health effects (like IBD, joint disease, eye problems, sexual disorders, chronic fatigue, memory issues) can arise even up to 10 years after discontinuing the medication, even if you were OK (with no symptoms/normal bloodwork) when on it. In other words, this drug isn't safe for anyone. Even if you have no problems now, you're still at an increased risk of developing very serious health problems later. I know SOOO many people who this happened to (they took accutane as teens, were OK then, but 10-15 years later developed serious effects that do not run in their family). I hope it won't happen to you. But if you mysteriously start developing unexplainable side effects one day you may remember this comment!

When I was 15 I was prescribed Minocin for horrid acne. A month later I was fighting for my life & barely looked human. Took me years to fully recover. Then, another GP gave me the same drug under a slightly different name. All GPs dismissed my thoughts that the drug could have severely poisoned my body. They said it must have been caused by something else unknown. So, 2nd time I was assured I would not react. It was "impossible" apparently. Yet after taking only 1 tablet this time I reacted again. It was very bad. I was living alone & thought that night I might die. I was in agony & shivering & shaking all over. Thankfully, although bad, I recovered faster as I'd only taken one tablet 2nd time & was given a high dose of steroid treatment to counteract my reaction. A few years later my hormonal acne flared up again. No way was I going to take pharma tabs for it, so I researched & found a topical skin treatment called Dalacin. I asked my GP for that & was prescribed it. It worked very well & I never looked back. Not only that but after a while my acne disappeared.

So many over the counter medication are only safe about 60-70% of the time, but works to get rid of your symptoms about 70-80% so most people will take the medication without even thinking that it can harm them. For example ibuprofen which can increase your risk of stroke 3x and heart attack 2x, but almost no doctors will ever tell you that. I only found out by going online and reading possible side effects of any medications that I was curious about

I took Roaccutane back in the 80's for cystic acne, as did my sister and it was magical for the acne, but tough on my joints & my skin/ hair is dry to this day. My teenage son is now on Orotane (the 'new' version.) Of course I will be monitoring his physical & mental health VERY closely, but I still support his decision to take it.

The mental health side effects can start AFTER you STOP taking it. I took it and it destroyed my intestines. Have been pooping blood occasionally for 10 years. Also have noticed the eye damage on my left eye ever since. A year or 2 after I stopped I got a very strange deep infected hole near my butt. Very scary medicine. Happy you haven’t had side effects

True Life: I had *severe* acne at 16 y/o. Took Accutane and 15 years later, I still *rarely* have a pimple. This is *not* the medication, but a teenager who lacked mental health support.

Me too. I was on accutane when I was 16. Cleared up my acne within 8 months and have had flawless skin ever since. I am 38 and still have perfect skin and rarely get a pimple. Accutane I think kills the oil glands that produces the breakouts. This story is very sad and has more to do with mental healthy than the actual medication

Same. Accutane was the only thing that helped me with my acne. My doctor prescribed it and they did blood checks often. I personally don’t recall any changes in mood except good ones because my skin finally cleared up. Mental health is difficult and I know they think he wasn’t depressed before he started the meds but lots of depressed or anxious people are very good at hiding it.

I’ve had this in the my 20s and it worked wonders for me, I didn’t have any side affects apart from dry lips. The Doctor did go through the side affects and I did read the leaflet throughly. Any medication you take you should read the leaflet provide within the medication box. Also had regular blood checks and was under a hospital doctor, who reviewed me monthly. I guess it’s all about having the correct care in place. So sad though, Appears he didn’t have the correct safety net in-place. I feel as a teenager you shouldn’t take such medication.

One thing you have to learn in life is never make fun of people because your life can change in a MINUTE. I had flawless skin until I was 21. People would tell me how lucky I was to have perfect skin. Almost overnight, my skin broke out into cystic acne. It was so bad my face hurt. People would very rudely stare at me. I wondered if they thought I was dirty when I was using very expensive cleansers twice as day so my skin was definitely not dirty. Some people would offer unsolicited advice. I spent thousands on different treatments and doctors. It blew my mind how differently people reacted to me because deep inside I would think "but I was that girl with perfect skin?? Don't they know that? Why are they treating me like this?" In my late 20's, my acne completely disappeared just as suddenly as it had appeared.

Very interesting story! It sounds like you had some type of Hormonal Acne if it starts in early adulthood. I know they can prescribe Spironolactone for this and maybe your doctors didn't suggest it?? I'm happy that this eventually went away for you! It always seems so insecure if others insult or make fun of someone's physical appearance, over which they usually have no control!!

I am glad he is ok, for now, but also, as a heads up: there are studies that show that the serious permanent health effects (like IBD, joint disease, eye problems, sexual disorders, chronic fatigue, memory issues) can arise even up to 10 years after discontinuing the medication, even if you were OK (with no symptoms/normal bloodwork) when on it. In other words, this drug isn't safe for anyone! I know SOOO many people who this happened to (they took accutane as teens, were OK then, but 10-15 years later developed serious effects that do not run in their family). I hope it won't happen to him... But if he mysteriously start developing unexplainable side effects one day (that don't run in your family) you may remember this comment! :(

I went on Roaccutane at 16, which apart from dry skin cleared my acne superbly. My mum swears that it caused me severe depression and anxiety. She begged me not to take it. I was that desperate for clear skin I was willing to take the risk of side affects. I was not told about the possibility of suicidal thoughts and depression/anxiety. I’m 40 this year and interestingly I can associate my depression with that specific era in my life. 😢 Still suffer to this day. DO NOT TAKE THIS POISON!!
