We show a couple of different ways to dye leather- and explain the many reasons we love using the airbrush! We show how easy it is to get a good, even coat and even a faded edge.
I just bought your airbrush and i cant wait to start playing with it. the whole reason i bought it was to do that gradient sunburst look. i think it really makes the project pop. thank you for a great video.
Been doing leather work for years and have had an airbrush for years. I have never used the two together. I feel like someone just told me about mixing chocolate with peanut butter. Pure beauty!
I recently came across your RU-vid videos and am very impressed. I appreciate how you teach and look forward to watching and studying all of your videos. You have already answered a lot of questions I have had for the past few years. Thank you
Im still very new to leatherwork bug this vid has convinced me that I need to buy an airbrush! Keep up the awesome vids as i really like the way you present things
Very informative. I'm going to have to buy an airbrush now :-) You are correct about multiple coats when daubing it can make your project look antique whether you wanted it or not. I learned a lot very enjoyable.
Very informative video. I’m struggling with the dye learning curve. This video helps a LOT. The MSDS Material Safety Data Sheets list the chemicals in dyes and dye reducers. Really eye opening.
I'm no professional in working with leather but I recently dyed a pair of boots and since I'm an automotive painter by trade I diluted the dye with acetone and sprayed it through my mini hvlp spray gun with a 1.0 fluid tip. It worked great! I got really even coats and was able to control the color very easily by applying multiple light coats. Might be something you'd wanna try in the future.
Hi Greetings from Slovenia. I really like this video, because my doubt to use airbrush is now crushed :) Thank you for this great video, will check others as well, after all, I'm new in the leather hobby so need as much as I can get info from masters like you. Best regards
Thank you so much, this video was exactly what I was wanting to learn. I just recently picked up the same exact colour dye, and I tried the dauber and noticed just that, I wasn't getting the honey colour. I'm still fairly new to the leather, and I just picked up the airbrush from Harbor Freight, and I've been eager to get to using it but was hesitant. But again this video put all my concerns at ease, thank you again. Keep doing what you do!
Hello from Brooklyn NY . First I wanted to thank you for serving our country be cause I noticed your sign in back of you . Secondly thank you for the informative video and lastly can you do a videos or videos on leather repair and color matching using a air brush ?
Great video Man, i dye baseball gloves. i was afraid of using the airbrush that i bought directly from Angelous thanks to this video i'll start practicing the airbrush dye technique
I just discovered the airbrush for leather, I’ll never go back. The airbrush just gives you complete control over the dye, that the daubers can’t, and you use so much less. (And dye ain’t cheap) I’m using a $15 eBay airbrush, and it works like a charm.👍🏻
Without the budget for an airbrush, I like to use a worn-out 50¢ chip brush. They give surprisingly good results without too much saturation. (with alcohol dye)
Hope you don't mind me asking a question. I'm just starting with leather tooling Archery arm guards and was wondering if I can use a spray product called Heavy-Duty Silicone Waterproofer from Tractor Supplies, it's for leather boots. And I have Fiebings 4 Way Care leather conditioner. With the Fiebings
Can I airbrush roughout leather? Totally new to owning/working with leather, looking to buy some Corcoran 10" roughout tanker boots. I hate the light colour they have and I'm looking to dye them using Fiebing’s Suede & Roughout Dye. It just happens I already have an airbrush and I am wondering if it will be good for this project.
What would you recommend when painting with Angelus paints over the brown and red feibings dyes? Every time I paint lets say white or yellow over airbrushed dyes, the dye seems to bleed through the paint and make it look yellow (when using over brown dye) or pink (when using over red dye). I've used super sheen, spray leather sheen and resolene as a sealer between the dye and paint and I still have the bleeding problem. Thanks in advance for any advice and nice video~ Ellicia~ Gettin It Custom Leather, LLC.
New subscriber and customer, just recently found your vids, from the card u sent me with my order. Thnkx. A quick shout out to don gonzales, he turned me on to your barry king snap setters. Til next order vietnam vet 173rd abn.
I enjoyed your video. Isopropyl alcohol is available in 2 percentages. 91% and 70%. The 70% has not been distilled as far and contains less pure alcohol. The 91% will flash (dry to the touch)slightly faster and cost more. You should not breathe the overspray. I look forward to more of your videos. Thanks for taking the time to share.
Do you also spray oil dye with your airbrush,if so,do you dilute it and what ratio.I suspect dry time would be longer than the alcohol based dye? Thanks for the video
Hi Robert, the rule of thumb with an airbrush is it needs to be thinner than the consistency of milk... so an oil dye will work just fine without diluting.
Aaron, can you use black antique over black dye or is it necessary. And if you wanted a black dye with red showing would you mix the two or apply one then the other over it. I am new at this and hope you don't mind. Thank you.
Alan, black antique over black dye doesn't sound like it would do much to me, but I could be wrong. As far as red showing I'm not sure what effect you are going for. If you mix red dye and black dye you'll basically get black or deep purple.
Alan, if you dye the leather red first using the fiebings pro dye only and then go over it with fiebings black antique you can get a good black red contrast. You might also, if the latter isn't black enough, try the red dye first, then mix some red and black dye and thin it with rubbing alcohol real thin and dye again, then the antique. Experiment.
In every video I watch of yours you mention a box, I was wondering what is the box for and if it can help me with my leather work how do I get one? Thank you in advance Russ
Pashee air brushes are great to use and the learning curve is short. I use mine for touch up on rust repairs on metal parts and for anything I would use a spray can of paint on. An air brush gives you better control of the amount of paint or dye you spray.
Here it is. We are sold out of it right this minute but are expecting a batch of them any day now. makersleathersupply.com/products/small-round-knife?_pos=1&_sid=b6ff51c2f&_ss=r
Thanks for the video, but why does the air brushed leather look so streaky? I expected it to have a very even coat. Is this possible? I would appreciate your comments.
As another retired Army Vet, new to leather working, I’ve been looking for a video or “tutorial” on doing military logos like the Army insignia on your cap. Are you aware of any or do you have an interest in carving and dyeing an Army logo?
I've done it both ways and have found it just to be a personal preference. I'm sure if I were doing more artistic things I'd want it standing up, but since I just do solid color, I lay it down.
I have never tried it personally but I'm sure you could. The rule of thumb on the airbrush is that you can use anything the consistency of milk or thinner.
I ask the manager at Tandy leather how to make the dye in to pro dye he said add oil I think he was wrong but I will only buy pro dye now and add alcohol to thin it
Aaron...I'm an old veteran who has taking up the hobby of leather work...question is can a small tank size portable compressor be used for this airbrush method of dying? Thanks for sharing your knowledge ....Craig AF15842322(1966-1970)
@@makersleathersupply1220 Ok, I mostly use fiebings and just bought an airbrush so wanted to know if it was fine ^^ From my test it works pretty good so I'll keep using what I know! :) Thanks for the reply! Take care
@@makersleathersupply1220 Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. I didn't thin the pro dye and it seems to work fine, and did some try with angelus paint, thinning it, seems to work good too. I'll try more mixing ratio to see the differences but I'm exciting with all the new possibilities that an airbrush brings. It's amazing to not see lines or patch on big project anymore ^^ And also having a real control on the lightness of the dyes, real game changer, took me a while to jump into it, but I'm glad I did!
I’m so scared to waste money on leather messing up my project when I color it, All the little pieces that go in the trash lol are my gold pieces now coloring them with air brush and learning with my new air brush, I clean my brushes and air brush out with the squirt/spray bottle from hobby lobby works great no my hands too lol
I really like watching your videos ,but those dyes when atomised can seriously help cause Cancer or breathing problems dude, it warns you on the pamphlet ! I`m shocked to see you spraying without wearing a proper mask even when doing small demonstrations . It will help to stop getting Cancer or lung disease later on in life by wearing one and more still you really should promote wearing a proper mask in your video when demonstrating dye or paint spraying . I`m always gob-smacked when I see anyone spraying without using a proper spraying mask & I don`t mean a cheapo $5 types either. Your health is at serious risk if you don`t wear one when spraying .
