I wish I had seen this video before I missed up my project that was otherwise going well! I did not know I could airbrush the sealer also, I thought I could only do this with the dye. Thank you. Now I think I will have to find videos on removing sealer and I will have to start over.

Cool I’m about to fire mine up before bed to clear coat a project. The great thing about spraying a clear finish is you don’t get color lifting and transfer trying to brush your clear finish on . Good luck

@@christophjoseph2406 I just received my air brush kit and got me some angelus dye and Im in love. The color is even all throughout and the control of the amount is amazing. It dried almost instantly! I feel like a kid with a new toy. I yet have to buy some syringes like yours, I made a small mess adding the dye straight from the bottle to the container. But other than that im impressed

Great video! By the way the name of the dye is Russ-ette as in the potato. Hence the medium brown color. Keep up the great work!!

Just started airbrushing dye. Do you deglaze before dye? Do you oil before or after or not at all? Tried a sample piece using Angelus Blue Jean dye. The piece came out with uneven color. Is this kind of normal? Could be the vegtan? I then sprayed it with Saddle Lac. Evened out the dye and looked decent. Thank you for your help.

I only use Feibings Pro dye and Hermann oak leather for optimum results. You can use dye prep. If you did any tooling and got an area wet. You gotta wipe the entire surface with a damp sponge and let it dry before dying I stay away from water dyes and oil dyes. Water dyes the colors are too transparent and not as brilliant . I use mostly solvent dyes because I’m dealing with paints as well. Oil and acrylic paints don’t hold up well together. Glad you watched the video and was informative. Airbrush is just far superior to brushes and daubers. Best of luck Chris

Hi Thanks for the comment and like . I got more video footage in the works That’s a 60w laser engraver I bought off EBay and distributed here in SoCal. It’s worked flawlessly the last 3 years. I paid about $1600 for it I’ll have to look up my purchase as there’s no visible brand name on the outside.

@@christophjoseph2406 You're welcome! Thank you! I look forward to watching your future videos. Thank you for replying back and providing information about you laser etching machine, greatly appreciated! I appreciate so much your time and that you are willing to research and provide me the brand of the laser etching machine that you currently have. I'm just starting out in leather working and researching different tools. I'm just trying to save myself time and money from purchasing tools that will not do what I am looking for. Your leather work is so skilled! I love the quality and look of your leather work. Thank you!

Nice work, I already got some air brushes, question what do you use to clean them out after you finish??
@christophjoseph2406

I use Iwata airbrush cleaner. It’s sold on Amazon. And works well for a water based cleaner Then I spray it out into an airbrush cleaner container.

@@christophjoseph2406 why wouldn't just plain ole water work, If the dye is water soluble then nothing on the planet would be a better solvent.
@mikedeloach6849
@mikedeloach6849 2 года назад
@@bipedalbob The leather dye shown above is solvent based, using a type of alcohol as the carrier. The Satin sheen is an acrylic finish, and while it is "water soluble", there are cleaners that do a better job of breaking down the acrylic binders in the medium. In an airbrush, you need to get all the little bits, blobs, and scraps removed, so using a cleaner designed to do it is an easy way to get things right. Yes, there are 'homebrew' alternatives, but sometimes buying a ready made product is easier, faster, and in the short term more cost efficient.

New to leather and recently bought air brush and compressor. I'm finding that the dye dries on the surface and doesn't soak into the leather. That surface dry then wipes off really easy onto your hands and whatever else. Very little dying of the leather occurred . What is up with this? I'd like to know what pressure you use, size needle set, and anything else you can think of. I can see from your video that the dye is sinking in and not setting on the top. When it sits on top it looks very grainy and that is the first clue spraying didn't work.

Hi , maybe these tips will help. I use Feibings pro dye for the majority of my airbrush dying. Seems to get best results Use a larger tip where material comes out I'm using 40-50 PSI. Too much you get that overspray mist on top Also ad a little dye reducer so it really soaks in the leather. I use several wet coats to really penetrate and build up to the shade of tan or brown I want. I just can't stand the blotchy look of hand dying leather with doubbers , brushes or sponges
@jgdevoe
@jgdevoe 4 месяца назад
@@christophjoseph2406 What is dye reducer? Never seen or heard of it. Firings?
@christophjoseph2406
@christophjoseph2406 4 месяца назад
@@jgdevoe Yes Fiebings makes dye reducer. Great for making a color lighter or in this case allowing to really saturate the leather and build up to the desired color. It's a lot easier to make a color darker than the opposite If the airbrush is clogged or nozzle to small it's hard to get some good saturation. You will end up with a dust of dye on top like you were explaining. I use a small nozzle for detail work or shading and a larger nozzle for dying large areas. I ended getting a different airbrush for each so I don't have to hassle with it . I think I was using the Paache VL model in that video which only came with one nozzle which worked just fine

I was recently planning on using an air brush to spray Eco flow water based dye, but the instructions on the bottle specifically say, Do not spray.
@christophjoseph2406
@christophjoseph2406 3 года назад
I mainly spray Fiebings Pro Dye for my leather dyes. Even though it says do not spray I still managed to spray it and it worked fantastic. That was probably for environmental reasons. Eco flow water stain is a little thicker so with a small tip you may need to ad a couple drops of water to thin. I’ve tried the Black and Tan. Both went down nice and uniform better than you can ever do by hand.
@bipedalbob

@@christophjoseph2406 I'm certainly going to give it a try because I've not be impressed with it, even black, it streaks very easily.
@christophjoseph2406
@christophjoseph2406 3 года назад
@@bipedalbob agree on the streaking. It’s horrible trying to apply evenly with a sponge, brush dauber or foam brush. Yes try water. It will spray straight out if the bottle but I’d thin it 5-10% Black dries kinda grey. It needs multiple coats sometimes

What size needle are you using?
@christophjoseph2406
@christophjoseph2406 11 месяцев назад
Hi I typically use the #2 for applying leather dye. It allows for enough material to go on but not too big when I’m working on specific confined areas. Leather dye is already pretty thing so it flows pretty good. If it’s a really large piece of leather I’ll use a 3 but wallets the 2 is just fine #1 can get clogged up when applying clear sheen so overall #2. Paasche is the only one I use and know Thanks for watching and inquiring
@akuluka
@akuluka Год назад
Did you thinned down the sheen or just using it directly from the bottle?
@christophjoseph2406
@christophjoseph2406 Год назад
The super sheen is thin right out of the bottle. I didn’t add anything to it . Typically I have to spray a second or third coat as it soaks into the leather. If I’m using it as a blocker for applying antique or highlighter definitely a few coats. So basically the only time I do mix or add anything to the sheen is if using super sheen and it’s a little too shinny, I’ll mix a little satin sheen in there
@akuluka
@akuluka Год назад
@@christophjoseph2406 yeah, I've used the satin sheen but using dauber it's tend to soaked in. Have to do several coats. Been figuring how to apply the cost using airbrush now. Picking some tips here and there. Thanks for the insight, awesome piece that. 🤘🏽

No problem I had to switch to using an airbrush because the sheen can lift the colors, smudge and smears them I have found causing colors to get disturbed especially when I mostly do multi colored wallets with dyes, leather paint and highlighter Just better all around way ti apply the final finish
