We cap off our Dynamic Component - Building a Fence series by adding pickets across the whole fence. Using exact spacing to set the picket components in place, follow along as we show you how to make sure each picket is in the right spot.

Excellent series, thanks. I twisted the settings a bit by giving an input for overall length and a choice for the beam 150 cm or 200 cm. I do had some minor issues again with the visability of the component options when the component is selected. Replacing selected components with another one is very handy.

Why not recalculate the space between or the width of the slat so it flushed off with end ?

can you make it so you can choose wether to have fixed or variable picket spacing? also option to not have start picket overlap ? your videos are great, very instructive and great bits of humor to keep things light.

Please show an option in which you can dynamically shorten or extend the length of the fence and add a variant with a gate

when you modified one component again, will it change other component or we should do "replace selected" thing again and again?

So the picket is a component inside the fence component? But it is dependent on the fence#5 component? does the component viewer let us know this? is this sketchup file available for us to play around with? would help to re-watch and mess about with the model.

Please Can you make a skip of copy on the pickets to make randomized fence...

I’m sure there has to be a way to get the formula to come out with even pickets so you don’t have to make one unique and cut it. Isn’t there???

Yes there is, actually a 3 part calculation of sorts Let’s assume a few knowns for example. Length of fence section: 30’ Width of slats: 3-1/2” Width of space: ½” To start: Slat plus space: 3.5” + .5” = 4” 30’/4”=90 however you need to subtract the last space (1/2”) at the end. To compensate for that you must divide ½” by 90 Keep in mind, the longer the run of fence the more precise you need to be. In reality when building a fence it’s called close enough for government work. SOooooo, with this in mind, you can do one of two things…in reality as you approach the end of the run, (you need to lose ½”). Or eight sixteenths of an inch, assuming precision is set to sixteenths, you could at 8 spaces before last slat is space the slats at 9/16” instead of ½”. Or go out 16 spaces and open the spaces up 1/32”. To do it in CAD which will identify the slightest error in calculations, you would need to divvy up that ½” overage among the 90 slats + spacing. Increase the precision of the program or calculator you’re using. Maybe to 1/128” of even higher. Hope this helps. Just and FYI, you would have to add .0055” (that’s 5 1/2 thousands of an inch (1/2”/90 =.0055”) A ridiculous amount to deal with when working with wood, But in Cad, a different beast. Hope this helps.

Douglas Michel yes thanks! I work with wood a lot(I’m building a boat) and from the wood to the computer and back can sometimes drive a person insane! Yes, boatbuilding is fairly exacting, but wood moves and the CAD just is!

@@daviddickmeyer5231 For sure, I’ve been in construction for a little over 45 yrs now, actually just retired, well semi. Love woodworking to much to give it up completely, especially with a wood shop. Been using CAD since the beginning of AutoCad, started cad in a machine shop, talk about tolerances, some as tight as +-.0005, yeah ten thousands of an inch. Especially when making parts for space industry and medical field. Heck....only a couple degrees in temperature either way and the parts are out of tolerance. I think when doing cabinets the tightest I’ve ever worried about was 1/64”. Even that is a bit crazy. But it’s a blast when it’s a tight fit and all goes together as drawn.

Douglas Michel, I sound like you and I would enjoy each other’s company and working together. Since I retired in 04 my wood shop has been my fun place to go. And of course my computer with SketchUp.

@@daviddickmeyer5231 Absolutely, it would be great. Don’t ya just love SU? As much as I love SU, AC, for the past 10 yrs I guess, i use Chief Architect Premier, its like SU with every extension plus steroids for construction docs, SU for smaller projects and custom symbols for use in CA. If ever in the North East of USA, give me a shout out and I’ll throw a few on ice.

Cheers for the info. My constructive feedback: Reduce verbosity 30% and research terminology i.e fencing components: posts, rails, pickets/palings. Thanks :)

Makes a pretty drawing but not very realistic when it come to construction. In real life you would have most sections of fence a fixed dimension say 10 feet and you would have a custom piece at the end. Otherwise you end up with a whole bunch of short cutoffs that get thrown away. Also each side would have a custom size. That’s not how fences are built.

It's just an example man, take it easy. Play around with it and use it how it works for you. I've detailed a lot of fences and agree with you but there is still a TON of information in this series of videos and in the other one especially if you have frames on fences.
