In this DMA tutorial, we provide information on how Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) can be applied to help solve your analytical problem.
DMA is an important technique used to measure the dynamic mechanical and viscoelastic properties of materials. The force and displacement amplitudes and phase shift are analyzed as a function of temperature, time and frequency.
In DMA, the sample is subjected to a periodic stress in one of several different modes of deformation. Processes and events measured by the DMA include secondary relaxations, glass transitions, crystallization, solid-solid transitions, crosslinking reactions, melting, flow behavior and the rubbery plateau.
Application examples presented cover the rheological behavior of PET in shear mode, determination of all phase transitions in PTFE measured in shear and tension and the analysis of silicone oil in liquid shear mode. In addition, the characterization of a thin coating, modulus determination of printed circuit board in 3-point bending and the investigation of EVA curing are also presented.
The DMA utilizes revolutionary technology and offers previously unattained performance and timesaving external sample loading.

How is Storage modulus (E') and Elastic Modulus (E'') calculated by the machine performing DMA without the value of delta?
@cheezwiz7
@cheezwiz7 6 лет назад
My guess would be:Delta is the phase shift between the generated stress vs time and strain vs time sin waves. The DMA can calculate this directly because it measures the displacement vs time and the load vs time which can then be used with the cross sectional area to get both sin curves.

Very useful. Thank you. Not sure whether I fully understand why material's behaviour at high frequency is equated to behaviour at low temperature and vice versa. Could somebody elucidate? Thanks
@cheezwiz7
@cheezwiz7 6 лет назад
From my understanding:Viscoelastic properties are largely based on response time. The response time is forcibly shortened at high frequencies due to less time between cycles, while at lower temperatures the response time is shortened because cold temperatures slow the "flow" of molecular chains.

ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wH3J4DDQWnc.html Can anybody explain how force can be negative (the part of sin wave below dashed line)? What does it mean?
@jasongarfitt1147
@jasongarfitt1147 4 года назад
The sign of the applied force is related to the direction to which the force is being applied. If a force acting up is positive then a force acting down will be considered negative.
