Michael Jackson famously used the Shure SM7B (the dynamic mic in this video) in the STUDIO. It's not just about sensitivity, it's about the overall sound and how a mic contributes to that.

For sure. The SM7B is commonly used to record vocals. We have to speak in general terms for a video like this, but we did say in the STUDIO that the split is 75% condenser mics, which is believe is accurate.

I love the condenser sound so much more even for streaming. Your voice for example .... SO MUCH BETTER on the condenser. I know there are down sides to it but still.

i have samson Q2u and zoom H4n pro. so i wanted to see the difference myself. i recorded a podcast of two minutes in a non echo room. after applying podcast preset in adobe audition. even I wanted zoom H4n pro to be turn out better, unfortunately there was no significant difference after editing. also in echo room samson Q2u turn our to be way better. but ya there was dramatic difference when I compared the guitar recording. So, I think for personal Podcasting condensers are big not keeping price and conviencen in mind.

Thanks for the comment. It's also important to note that for this video to be helpful we have to speak in general terms. There will of course be tons of variants within each category of microphones. That being said, comparing a handheld dynamic mic to a handheld small diaphragm recorder isn't completely an apples to apples comparison. The H4N isn't an XLR microphone, in order for it to be so versatile they will have a great deal of internal processing inside this device. I know in our studio, condenser mics always pickup traffic and vehicles in the background when our dynamic mics don't.

I have focusrite 4i4. In the front panel, there are 2 XLR inputs. Now my question is can I use both condenser and dynamic mic at the same time. After inserting the condenser mic, I have put on the phantom power. There will it damage my dynamic mic.

Thanks for the great informative video! For voiceover work I think condenser mics are far superior and mics like the TLM103, U87ai, MKH416, etc. are the standards. Might also be good to consider the difference between small diaphragm and large diaphragm condensers and use cases.

Thanks for the comment. You're absolutely right, we touched on this very briefly at 11:26. We spent more time talking about Podcasting/Live Streaming in this video mostly because that's what the most people are looking for. But you're right, the TLM103, U87ai, MKH416, etc. are all used for studio grade voice applications.

Hello sir, I have a question that is not related to this video but related to audio interface + blue yeti pro mic. I have a Scarlett solo gen 3 and a blue yeti pro that I am trying to connect through XLR cable. I am able to get the mic working through the audio interface, however when i use the direct monitoring on the scarlett solo, I can only hear sound from the left ear only. (also getting some weird rythmatic feedback through the monitoring. Do you think I should just use the mic as USB mic instead going for XLR? or getting another XLR mic instead?

@@kettnercreative Yeah i saw that video, except i am using a blue yeti pro, which i am not connected through USB at the moment, the pro has XLR option as well, which i am using through the phantom power + XLR to the Scarlett solo gen 3, everything works fine except direct recording through the mic only records on left ear for some reasons. (I can temp fix it by running it through RTX voice/nvidia broadcast) I just have no idea why it is doing it. could the XLR cable i using be the cause of this problem by any chance? I DID buy an AT2020 now tho so thats on the way. on the side note, if i hear some weird rythmatic feedback through monitoring without anything playing where could that be from?

@@kettnercreative Hi I actually got and XLR mic the AT2020, i seem to still be getting recording problem with the Scarlett solo gen 3 where the recordings only play through the left ear only, is there a setting i can change to fix this?

@@jackliu7114 Yes. In your software, you need to record a mono track. Somewhere along the line, you would have created a "stereo track", then assigned the scarlett 2i2, then hit record. In this case, it's recording the left and right input of the scarlett 2i2. You need to create a new track > mono track > scarlett 2i2 input 1 > then hit record.

The actual operating principle of the microphone is irrelevant. Assuming that a dynamic and a capacitor mic have the same polar pattern, and that their diaphragms are the same distance from the sound source, they will pick up exactly the same balance of direct to reflected sound.

I disagree 100%. The operating principle changes the sensitivity of the mic dramatically. This is a completely different dimension.

I didn't mention sensitivity. I stated that the balance of reflected sound (reverb) will be equal if the gain is equalized, which was discussed in #2 point at 2:20. Unless you plan to record in an anechoic chamber, no microphone will pick up only the direct sound coming from a voice or instrument. Some of that sound will always bounce around the room and be captured in a reflected form as ambience or reverberation. The balance of reverberation to direct sound that is captured depends on two factors only. The first is distance: the closer the mic is to the sound source, the more the direct sound will tend to dominate over ambience. The second is the polar pattern of the microphone, and the position of the sound source in relation to it. This principle applies to both types of mic's equally.

It’s a myth that condenser microphones pick up more ambient noise than dynamic microphones. The ratio of ambient noise to subject noise is dependent upon polar pattern and noise source to microphone distance and not dependent on whether it’s a dynamic or condenser. So for two mics with the same polar pattern and the same distance between subject and microphone capsule the background noise will have the exact same ratio to the subject signal. The reason dynamic microphones appear to have better background noise rejection is because people typically put the sound source closer to the capsule because they tend to be more resistant to plosives and proximity effect. So if you want to use a condenser in a noisier room get as close to the capsule as you would with a dynamic and there will be no background noise difference. Sadly people keen perpetuating this misconception and leading people astray.
