I was on that tour. How things have changed. In today's over risk averse Australia it would never be allowed.

Imagine the prosperity if the government employed a dozen or more apprentices to restore all those trains and learn trades .

Around this time I delivered a secondhand 245 Hemi to go to somewhere in Western Vic by train. IIRC it was to no.2 goods shed. Thing is what I do remember is the utterly outrageous freight charge of $180. The freight was more than the cost of the motor and I distinctly remember thinking no wonder VR is going to hell. Who comes up with these freight charges? Older and far more cynical I clearly see people with an agenda - that's who!

Rail freight couldn't compete with road freight perhaps because mindless government beaurocrats instead of making rail competitive they instead tried to level the playing field with ridiculous taxes and restrictions on trucks. Even as it took till the 21 St century to duplicate the Hume hwy for trucks, our trains still struggle up mountains and tracks unchanged since they were laid two centuries ago.

@@reidgck, christopher lovelock, there are some videos about the restoration of an aec by, i think dermpav. not sure about that. i think one video has them taking it down sunshine road. they were noisy and rattly - my favourite bus. for those who don't know, the aec's were the only sort of bus the mmtb ran for decades from the late 30's. i'm sure reidgck remembers them well.

4:09 that seems to be the remains of an xy type car - 3 axles. i wonder where that is now.

It looks as if the chances of its future survival at the time were rather slim.

@@reidgck, its rarity may have saved it even if has remained as it is within someone's shed. i imagine you remember the similar van, in far more original shape, removed from a yard in castlemaine used as a chookhouse that is now at beaufort. i remember the local paper mentioning how one had recently turned up in, was it, ballarat? i never found out any more about the other one besides that mention in that one news article.

@@vsvnrg3263 Reminds me of the 3 axle guards vans of which there were plenty and there are still some around. Maybe the chassis are much the same but the superstructure is different.

Typical government shortsightedness, not interested in the future of Melbourne's tourism. This could've brought railfans in from all over the world.
@reidgck

Very true. Would be hard to get the locomotives to there now. A football arena is in the way. Hard to get trains to St Kilda and Port Melbourne now too. A casino is in the way. They must have figured they could get more loot from other activities than from tourists who have railway interests

Where is this goods shed?
@reidgck

It is parallel to Southern Cross Station. It was chopped in half by the Collins Street extension to Docklands. Has new buildings now hiding it at each of its Collins Street ends.
