The ability to make inferences is an essential component of reading comprehension and one with which students with reading disabilities struggle. Unfortunately, little research has been done to clarify how this instruction might be structured or delivered to help struggling students. This presentation will focus on teaching inferencing to students with reading disabilities by sharing an overview of the research supporting the need for such instruction, proposing a new teacher-friendly taxonomic format for organizing and addressing inferencing skills, and providing specific instructional strategies and materials for classroom use in teaching inferencing skills.
About the Presenter:
Dr. Rotter worked in the field of reading disabilities and special education as a teacher, educational diagnostician, State Department administrator and Director of Special Education for a large suburban school district. She was an Associate Professor at The College of New Jersey where she taught graduate and undergraduate courses on learning disabilities. She was also the Director of the TCNJ Dyslexia Initiative. The Dyslexia Initiative is a multi-pronged effort to provide training to students and practicing teachers on all issues associated with dyslexia including screening, assessment, accommodations and remediation. The Dyslexia Initiative provides Orton Gillingham certification training in several Orton based programs and operates the Student Evaluation Center which is a NJ approved clinic for the evaluation of suspected disabilities. Dr. Rotter's teaching and training focused on translating research into clear and usable practice and strategies for teachers. She has presented hundreds of sessions to teachers and administrators on issues associated with meeting the needs of students with learning disabilities. Perhaps most importantly, Dr. Rotter believed that learning and laughter should be partners in all training sessions!
