Dyson SV03 - V6 Slim Battery Not Charging Solution and Better Maintenance Technique

In an unexpected twist of events, my one year old Dyson SV03 V6 Slim decided that a full charge now lasts less than one minute. Granted I have not always been on top of the maintenance procedure, but having read through the manual and looked at the indication on the LED, something seemed a but off.
Though the indication is that the battery is is flat, I believe this to be false and I have proven this to be so. However, for good measure I did test the charger to ensure the charging system was working with a multimeter, and it was operating normally.
For this video, I did pre-clean/repair this unit. I did not want to work and video and handle cameras with a nasty unit. And since the reason for all of this is due to internal resistance that extends far beyond what the cleaning regiment in the manual describes I begin with the breakdown of the unit and address both the shortcomings of the manual and the unit itself.
Note that this issue should be tested without any extensions for this problem. The problem could exist in the extension or the end device.
With that, disassembly begins with the basket, and brushing off of the screen as specified in the manual with the removal of the top filter. That is the extent of the following of the manual. I'd recommend doing this outside , with a mask in a well ventilated area.
To demonstrate the full cleaning I carefully unclip this screen as shown in the video and remove it, joining other pieces that are simply washed. What lies below is so impacted with disgustingness, that the screws might not be visible, requiring air and a brush to expose.
Having removed the dirt on the shroud, it is unscrewed and joins items to be washed and dried. below it is further nastiness, and a series of tubes, mine, being impacted with dirt. All of these small tubes must be cleaned out for proper operation.
I demonstrate that dirt and nastiness does not come out of the filter running it under the tap, it just makes it worse. I further separate it with the three snaps. Mine was filled with dig hair and the water from cleaning turned the dirt into cement. I used the shower head to clean out the filter to brand new condition.
With everything dried, reassembly is conducted and a full charge is allowed to occur. I tested a full run with a stopwatch before the batter went flat and found that the full length of time had been restored to the unit.

I work on these for a living, a little tip, after you remove the dust bin up above the serial number sticker on either side of the electrical contacts, there's little white plastic tabs, push each one in towards center while pulling out on the cyclone and the cyclone will release from the main body. You can then fully submerge the cyclone in water to clean it out. There's no electronics inside. Great video!

I have found the dyson V6 to be a poor design with regards to cleaning. The bin seal is poor allowing dust and fibres to collect around the rim and has you have found, dust build up in the internals. It is actually difficult to clean quickly or indeed easily (This video helps but should we have to take a screwdriver and dismantle!). My V6 now cuts off after a minutewith the blue flashing LED. Some people will assume it requires a new rechargable battery unit; others will just throw it away and buy another. The issue prompted me to look for others experiences; hence here. Thank you sir for a chance to save me money and deprive Dyson. P.S. I have a corded Miele with bag as the main Vac - easily cleaned properly.

Fantastic advice. No one should assume that the manufacturer instructions are the be all and end all. I stripped mine down after the same blue light fault per your video and found it quite dusty but not exceptionally. Gave it a thorough clean. Charged the battery after reassembly and now it works brilliantly. The cone filter was quite full at the bottom so I think that could’ve been the main problem. But it just goes to show how a bit of dirt can cause what seems like a battery fault. Don’t just assume that’s the case and change it. Half an hour clean every month or so will keep it running smoothly. Thanks so much.

Had the same problem and measured the cells and only 1 cell was coming down to 3.98 where all the others were 4.10. Being in electronics and worked at one time for a battery company, I knew it was not the cells. I too was thinking it might be drawing too much current and I thought I cleaned it well until I saw your video. It would run for 6 seconds than had to recharge it so the electronics would reset it and allow the motor to run after a 10 second charge. After cleaning it well like your video it is running just it was when new. Thanks for posting this. This works!

Thanks for the video. In my case, the battery gets fully charged but when I turn it on, LED goes Blue, immediately Yellow, and then blinking Blue. Dyson tech chatted it as being temperature issue. Thanks to your video, I cleaned SV04 and now no problem. It seems that the problem was caused by blocked air passage and motor overheated. Glad I found this video.

I first looked for new batteries then found this video. Great step by step video - followed it and WOW, so much dust & cat hair (we have 4 cats!). Now drying and will later find out it this "fixed it." But judging from the 87.375 cubic feet of dust removed, I think we'll be good. Hello Mr. Rubins. THANK YOU so much for this awesomely detailed and informative video. I have a regular V6 that I use infrequently that stopped working, probably due to power issues. I visited the Dyson web site and their troubleshooter/sales assistant said I needed a new battery. But at $95 a pop, I decided that I needed to do some actual investigating on my own. The V6 has no lights of any color or flashing pattern, even when plugged directly into it's charger. When I measured the charger's output voltage it was on spec at 26.1V. It looks like there is a replacement battery in my future. Hopefully, it will be reasonably priced. Thanks to your video, my V6 has been safely disassembled and cleaned (for the most part.) Unfortunately, along the way I found that my tool bin lacks a T9 Torx bit. Oh well.

This didn't fix mine that was doing the exact same thing and was ready to throw it away. Mine would run about 20 seconds and stop and flash blue - instantly went to this one day after having worked fine. I found another tip online that fixed it - AFTER doing a full cleaning job as you describe: Unplug AC from wall for a a minute to reset it. Plug back in. Put vacuum on charger. Press and hold trigger for 15 seconds. Release. Take off charger and it works. Apparently this resets some threshold for the battery sensor is my guess.

Those conical sections are to create centrifugal force in the air stream in order to create another form of filtration, look up shop vacuum dust buddy. Also the build up of dust is going to happen in all environments regardless of humidity levels. In the case of air moving at all, air creates static electricity which will cause strong bonds between the plastics inside the machine and the dust that runs through it.
@oshawaxpress

Humidity levels and speed and degree dust accumulation are directly related, 'buddy'

oshawaxpress Your post doesn't even make sense(I'll copy and paste it so you can't edit it). Try learning something basic, like how to write and convey ideas through the written word before critiquing others. But, from what I can extrapolate from your senseless garble, the factors you state, in deed would contribute to the amount of accumulation. But, of course you obviously missed the point of dust accumulation in spite of your stated factors, 'Buddy'🙄 Original post: "Humidity levels and speed and degree dust accumulation are directly related, 'buddy'"

Very helpfu,l but I've not risked the.thorough service this video shows. I've had my V6 animal for almost 5 years and for the last year it has only held about a 10minute charge, which I have managed with. I had washed the filter as required by the instructions on a regular basis, and when the dust canister fell off a couple of times I gave the base of the purple unit a few slaps w0ith my hand, which produced more dust and what might be the other solidified stuff buried more deeply ( because it has come out formed into little pills). I'm now going to put the expensive new battery in place. I found removing the 2 screws that held the old one 'difficult and it was even harder to remove the battery, which this site has helped me with.

Excellent video, thanks. I'd looked at other videos on disassembly and cleaning these but your video is the best I've found. Maybe a little wordy but definitely right on target. My SV04 is running much better and for longer period of time for sure. I also found another tip of putting the unit beck into the charger cradle and holding the on button down for 10-15 seconds to reset. Remove from the cradle and run the vacuum. That does work and cycling with that sequence has also seemed to help mine to run longer. Not sure if it is just draining the batteries better or rebalancing, but it does seem to work. The pre filter disassembly and internal cleaning is spot on. I don't think my wife has ever replaced that filter and it's probably 5 years old. Pretty nasty inside to say the least. Cleaned it and dried it in a pre heated over of 200F (turned the oven off for frying the filter). Worked great and I'll keep that as a spare and replace with a new filter. Before you start, you might want to run a couple of experiments to make sure that you do in fact have to disassemble the filter canister. First, charge up the battery and see how long the motor runs with the filter canister attached. Then remove the filter canister (but don't bother cleaning it yet), charge up the battery and run the same experiment. If it runs quite a bit longer without the filter canister, then wash the removable filter, let it dry, and try the experiment again. If simply washing the removable filter doesn't do the trick, then you can try disassembling the canister.

I thought that was pretty good. I did put the old cone filter back in and I will start checking it quarterly. Have a safe new years eve!

Hi, I know you did this video years ago, but I come back to it often to clean out my V6. Can you tell me why the battery is not charged after I have cleaned it out( as per your video)? My thinking is the battery should be charged still after you’ve cleaned it & the resistance has been eliminated. Your clean out did fix my vacuum & it worked- I was able to restore 16-17m of constant run time. I had to recharge, as you did in the video. Thanks Jennifer from Canada.

Thanks. Over done on the dust removal I think. As if dust stops its ability then they would not work period. My gosh everyone does cleaning videos. Mine is clean! It shuts off after 10 seconds on high setting. Low works fine. But sometimes I want to use high! High kills it after 10 secs and then it won't even turn on at all. Has to be put back on charger. Then it will work later on. Great video. But I figure lots of this cleaning is redundant. These things are tough and will normally work even with a partial clog!

I don’t disagree with your method of trying to clean the cylindrical filter. Most people don’t have access to compressed air like you and me. I actually managed to turn one of these filters inside out to check after spending time trying to clean it, it was still bunged up solid in the bottom third. So it was changed. This is why I said it’s a bad design, because any filter I’ve had dealings with, be it on car, plane etc. you can easily see both sides of the filter. Joe public will take it out of the vac, see that it looks ok and put it back. The earlier Dyson effectively came apart in two halves exposing a palm size filter you could see both sides and clean easily. Max

Sir, I have also dismantled my dysfunctional V6 Dyson curious about cyclones and how the impressive sucking occurs making Dyson so impressive and not suck ? The air speed is increased using turns in the multi channel cyclone design, the down side is more places dirty air has to pass to be caught. Anyways when i point the air compressor gun tip around the smallest inside ring underneath and use a mask , copious amounts fly out the big screen and without the extra skills needed to diamante is my point at last . Great production .Lol

The cylindrical filter that’s removed from the top is misleading. Logically, you expect the dirt to be seen on the outside of the filter when you remove it. But the airflow is into the centre of it taking the dirt with it. It’s very difficult to clean the filter with just water. In fact the last one I looked at the bottom third of that filter was clogged with solid dirt. The only solution was to put a new filter in. A bad design in my view. The earlier models had a bigger filter which was easy to clean.
