Wow. I am impressed by your testing process & standards. THANK YOU for your diligence, Sir! I have just started down the path of getting my V6 working. I found it nonfunctional 2 days ago. No power, lights or anything. The V6 charger output measured to it's 26.1V spec. As far as battery choice goes, the First Power brand looks like a good choice for me. THANKS! Your video has given me quality information to use in making my battery choice.
My battery went bad and I tried to order a “good” one from Dyson. But, they were out of stock and no idea when they would be able to provide. So, I replaced the Dyson fixed battery with a Makita removable LiOn battery system. It’s a little bulkier than the original, but I can now swap out batteries, and even use a much larger 5 Ah battery for longer run time. Not something easy to do, but really don’t understand why Dyson doesn’t go that route.

Electronics engineer here to help... Have you noticed how the Dyson runs at the same performance from start to finish of a charged battery? That it simply doesn't change speed as the battery runs out? That's because somewhere in the system is voltage regulation, and the most efficient voltage regulators keep the same continuous power output from the battery. This is important as the Dyson may have (I don't know) a lower internal working voltage. With the voltage regulation (using a buck / boost controller) it could inflate the mAh times for a specific battery. High voltage, low current at the start and as the battery voltage drops as it drains it would increase the current, keeping the power constant. That would explain why some are doing better than others, one that are able to sustain a higher voltage from a fresh charge for longer. However, that's not going to explain the wild differences from something that should run twice as long as the Dyson battery but doesn't! Next, the switch's thin wires. Simply not important. That switch isn't carrying any significant level of current, might not even be a mA. For the recharging, same, the current is much lower because the charge time is far longer than the run times. Thin wires aren't so important. Finally, the blacked out markings. It's not uncommon for Chinese companies to buff off the names of ICs etc to stop people copying them. I suspect in this case they know they've got a good battery and are trying to make it more difficult for someone to see which one they're using. I wouldn't say it's ideal, but probably not blacked out for the reasons you've stated.

I do agree these off-brand battery manufacturers are not sophisticated enough to actually be calculating the mAh based on voltage/current demand. While they are certainly pulling the wool over people's eyes by overinflating the ratings, it's certainly an interesting discussion! Ive purchased the knock off made in China batteries and they outlast the OG Dyson battery every time,the massive over rating of the amp hour ratings is getting way out of control now
@@HouseOfVacuums I just replaces a OG Dyson V8 22.6v 2800mAh battery with a eBay Fake Dyson V8 22.6v 9000mAh and i'm getting basically the same run time on full power. I would love to expose this fraud on eBay but I know the sellers have really good legal protection and angry lawyers. It seems on eBay you really require extreme buyer beware on any style of purchase. The site seems to promote some really shonky dealers.

One point of clarification, though: You decided that the First Power battery was the "winner" at 16:06, but then at 16:29, you say, "All that being said, the best option is always the OEM Dyson battery." Can you clarify how these two statements jibe? If FP is the winner, then why is the Dyson one "always the best option"? Thanks.
Thanks for the comment! My statement was made within the context of the Amazon sources batteries. Out of the 4 I tested, FirstPower was the best. However, replacement batteries still carry inherent risks and reliability issues. So, ultimately, the OEM is the gold standard and FIrstPower rated first among 3rd party batteries. Interestingly, i've just stripped down an original V8 battery and it contained Molicell cells. These are not 18650's as they are slightly longer (70.2mm) and a larger diameter (20.4mm). They are branded with Dyson's logo and numbered 1NR-20700A / 0842K10603. These do not fit in most fixed 18650 chargers but will work in those with adjustable earth electrodes. Now i just have to find something i can use them in...
That is very interesting, I've never come across a genuine Dyson battery using Molicell cells. But they are great, so I would have any hesitancy they can meet OEM spec. Many more recent Dyson models have moved away from the 18650 form factor to the slightly larger 20700 or 21700 cells. They provide more capacity and typically higher discharge rates than 18650 cells. The 20700 standard was created by Panasonic/Sanyo to add capacity to cordless tools and the 21700 standard was pushed by Samsung and LG Chem for high discharge applications. The 21700 form factor can also be found in the Tesla Model 3 and some models of their Powerwall.
@@HouseOfVacuums That's them exactly. After doing some checks the Molicells in the Dyson battery are indeed classed as 20700 cells. I didn't even know such things existed...
@@lesrogers7310 Just so you know 18650 means 18mm wide and 65mm tall though the height and thickness can slightly vary due to wrapping and protection circuitry built into the tops. this is why the 20700 cells measure close to 20mm and 70mm. Just the slight increase of the size can increase the capacity quite a bit, reason why tesla started developing their own 2170/21700 cells.
I've just busted open an original Dyson v6 pack, lost the spring lol. Just wanted to say the wires to the switch and the charge port seem very thin gauge to me on the Dyson original. I suppose it's probably okay because the microswitch is just a signal switch, it's just looking for continuity or not (actual vacuum motor current runs through the beefy prongs). And the charge port, although 26V, is a fairly small current, I think I saw 700mA or thereabouts.
You are absolutely right, it is just a signal switch. It certainly wouldn't be a deciding factor for me, but I thought it was worth pointing out since it appears that cost was the manufacturer's primary concern. Thanks for watching and comment!
@@HouseOfVacuums Charging is also done at very low input levels (typically things like 1/5th of the output level). They start by charging at constant current then switch to constant voltage for ebike batteries and tools so probably do for these too.
If I was going to go with a non-OEM battery, I would choose the Power Extra based on the cells. On the topic of the Amazon reviews, the one nice thing about the Power Extra is that Fakespot gives it an "A" rating for review reliability, meaning there are a high percentage of real reviews. Other items may have higher star ratings, but if they score "B" and below on Fakespot they are likely purchased reviews or fakes. As to not wanting to burn down your house, I'm not an electrical engineer so I cannot vouch for the PCB. However, the cells are reliable. If you want the safest, the OEM battery is the way to go even though it is expensive. Cheers!

Thank you for making this video. Alas First Power doesn't seem to be available on Amazon anymore. Not the best solution, but I'll be gauging the user reviews by checking the 1, 2 and 3 star reviews of those with most number of reviews (here in Australia).
@@HouseOfVacuums I ended up ordering one that Amazon advertised as “#1 Best Seller”, even though it had fewer reviews than a similar one. Probably won’t know how well it lasts till we’ve had it for 3 to 6 months. My original battery lasted years, when it was the last of the DC59 before rebranded as V6. Amazon battery was $30 vs Dyson’s $120 in Australian dollars.
@@HouseOfVacuums So it would seem then that genuine Dyson batteries are by far the best, but are they best by runtime per dollar? And lifetime hours per dollar? I felt like runtime was not good to start with so I came looking for longer-running compatible batteries. Like how you get so so so much better value with non-genuine printer ink/toner cartridges. No way am I going to spend a cent on lower-capacity batteries. The main issue I have is the battery running out before finishing vacuuming and having a patch or whatever of dirty area left and having to wait for the battery to cool down and then recharge. I guess the best options are: 1) revive the screws, get a second genuine battery, and swap batteries half way through vacuuming; 2) buy high quality cells in serial sets and wire the sets together in parallel with the original and seal in a neat case. Kind of like the one you reviewed but using quality units.

Unfortunately, not to my knowledge. I do think there is a huge untapped market for a quality replacement battery that falls between OEM and the Chinese "cheapies". Something similar to Wasabi or Watson with cameras. Perhaps one day! Thanks for watching!
Thank you again House of vacuums I ordered my battery through the link provided easy to install about 5 minutes after a full overnight charge I did a real-life vacuum test meaning that I actually vacuumed my whole house the new battery lasted 18.5 minutes on low ( almost enough to vacuum my house two times ) within one minute of the vacuum battery being depleted I took a temperature with a laser temperature probe 101° ( dead center back of battery ) The very next day on full charge I ran vac on high it lasted six minutes and 48 seconds and the temperature on the battery was 120°. Description on the bottom of battery - Li-ion rechargeable battery pack for dc62 / dc61, 21.6 v 5000mah, 108wh , Some warning information and lastly made-in-china. Question since the batteries was a little warm is it okay to charge it up or should it be cooled down before charge ? I know in the past five years with the V6 I never let the battery cool down before charge. Thank you
Sounds like the temperature is staying within reason... although that second run was significantly hotter. Did you have it on high for that run (that will indeed cause it to heat up)? For charging, it is best to let the battery completely cool down before charging... I usually wait about 30 minutes. When it is warm and has just been run, the electrons are still "excited" and charging it in this state can stress the battery. Thanks for watching and the comment!
To answer your question. All batteries when they get warm is when they are most vulnerable for permanent damage. When charging cycle is finished, the cells are usually warm. You should let them cool down before usage. This also applies under heavy usage to depletion, cells will get warm and they should cool down prior to starting the charging cycle.
I got a first power and that was a mistake. Worked fine for a couple uses and then acted like the original Dyson battery that I had for years and would only run max mode for 3 seconds and cut out. Normal mode a minute if I was lucky. Turd cells.
Great feedback! Unfortunately, anything power with lithium ion cells has the potential to run into these issues. Particularly until vacuum manufactures start designing their battery packs with the care that power tool brands do. Whether replacement or OEM, vacuum batteries tend to be cheaply made and a reliability crapshoot. However, based on the cells themselves, I do still believe the FirstPower is a cut above the other replacement batteries. Cheers!

Thanks for commenting, Luis! Not all lithium batteries are the same. Every model from each manufacturer has different specifications that make them well suited to certain applications. For a Dyson V6 battery, you must use cells with a minimum 20 amp discharge rating. Check out our battery dissection playlist as starting point. I'm unfamiliar with the different Tesla cell specs, but any cell with that discharge rating would work. I don't think that a Tesla cell would necessarily be better or worse in this application. Particularly for the price, I would still with a quality cell from Sony, Panasonic, Samsung or LG.
In these particular design the batteries are organized in essentially a straight line, positive to negative end and so on. This is called a series configuration. What this does is increases the voltage of the battery, but it does not increase capacity or amp ratings. So if you have a series battery pack and you know that one cell is 2000mAh, then you can also ascertain that the entire pack is rated at 2000mAh. I hope that helps!
More Ah will give you more run time. However, what you need to watch out for is manufacturers inflating that rating. As you saw in the video, most of the replacement manufacturers over-inflate their battery pack's capacity. Hope that helps!
I'm thinking of converting one of these packs to 26650 cells, 2 cells on top of 4. They have much better specs, than the 18650. it wouldn't fit in the cradle anymore but I think the charge plug can be removed from the cradle to plug straight into the pack. Do you have Any thoughts on the matter?
I think it is doable as long as you keep the same number of cells so the voltage remains the same. The major issue I would foresee is how to encase them in a housing for safety since you don't want open battery connection for safety's sake.
Your best bet would be to run 18650 cells in a 6S2P format. If you had access to a 3D printer, you could easily design a case that could accommodate this and connect to the portion of your case that screws in and plugs into your vacuum.
Hello HoV. I have been looking at a First Power 5.0Ah battery for my V6 on Amazon. The item description says to wait 15-30 minutes after use before charging, otherwise battery life will suffer. Do you know what this is about? Is this about heat? My V6 has a charging base and that is where I keep it when I am not using it. So it it always plugged in. Should I put the charger on a switch and hope I can remember to turn it on after 30 minutes? Once the battery is charged, should I switch the charger off? Great question! When a battery cell is done discharging at a high rate there is still a lot of movement/heat built up in the electrolyte in the cell. Giving it some time to cool down to a resting state prior to charging helps the cells last longer.
I feel like the only way to really get a good battery is get a generic pack, and swap out the garbage cells with some extremely good cells, particularly since Dyson has none in stock... but will the control board still wreck them or actually balance them properly?
Thanks for the comment. Dyson batteries use very high quality cells, so the issue isn't so much an issue of cell issues but, typically, either stress or continuous charging. For stress, there are a few things that shorten cell life like running on high constantly (high drain situation) or charging the battery immediately after use without a "cool down" period. Both of those are hard on cells. Then there is constant charging which can also damage the pack. Essentially, the PCB is constantly monitoring the voltage in the cells and providing small top offs if necessary. Doing this 24/7 is hard on both the PCB and the cells. Unfortunately, due to the age of this video I don't have any current information. However, my experience with DutyOne and Tenhutt batteries has been relatively positive. Hope that helps!

It's a good question. The unfortunate truth is that many sellers game the reviews. I use a browser plug-in called Fakespot that will tell you whether or not the reviews on an Amazon item are reliable. First Power's are typically graded as an A or B, meaning there is little manipulation, so you are getting real opinions. The second reason is sample size. The First Power 4.8Ah has over 800 reviews, meaning you are getting a better data sample. It is much harder to call listings with 50-100 reviews as representative. Ultimately, you can't beat the OEM Dyson batteries for quality and safety. Out of all the replacement batteries I've seen, the First Power is the safest just based on cell safety alone. But when a replacement costs 1/3 of the original, you are certainly giving up quality somewhere... which is why I always add the caveat that if you don't want to take chances with safety, you get the OEM every time. i was lured by the fake battery too. my conclusion is just buy the genuine item. unfortunately my oem did NOT last anywhere near 8 years, not even 2 or 3, which angered me giving the high price of these machines and persuaded my decision to bypass dyson's overpriced battery and go straight for a counterfeit. The counterfeit lasted a matter of months before showing rubbish performance and now it is acting very strange indeed with 3 cutouts before working normally??? but with a reduced runtime. I think it's better to just bite the bullet and buy an OEM dyson battery. They are all lying excessively about the mAh anyway so better to just buy the original.
@@HouseOfVacuums unfortunately as you predicted the best one rated may be buying cells in bulk - appears to be true. More recent reviews had pics of low quality cells and poor performance. So it’s a gamble on Amazon all full of crazy claims. Our v6 battery lasted 7 years so I reached out to dyson and 3min online chat later had a 20% discount and free shipping which closed the margin to only $20cad than the Amazon option, so going genuine. But serious thanks to your efforts proper analysis.
So, boiling all this down to the most succinct executive summary, the winner is: FIRST POWER. Is that right? Why not rank all the replacement batteries you tested from first (best) to last (worst)? I would get an OEM but Dyson is all sold out of the V6 models.
Yup, that's the verdict! I purposely didn't rank them because I would simply classify the HSW and Lekzai are definite "do not buy" models and the DutyOne is on the cusp. @Rubina Ali I have not tested that particular battery pack, so I really couldn't say with certainty since the quality on the Chinese packs are wildly inconsistent.
What is wrong with your lighting, keeps making light and dark patterns on the carpeted table. Very annoying, like I'm suffering heat exhaustion in the desert or something. Also, try not to use such a complex carpet design because it uses up a lot of the video bitrate, reducing the quality of everything else at same bitrate. Lastly, all I wanted was a spreadsheet listing the brands/models, listing the battery, listing rated current, achieved runtime, rated runtime, and cost. That ONE spreadsheet would be better than 18 minutes of talking.

Wow, that's intense. I've had two V6s hanging around for testing, one of them has to be close to 10 years old. I've replaced one battery so far. That being said, they do take some effort to maintain. Charging directly after vacuuming, leaving the battery on the charger, letting the vacuum fall, having clogged cyclones... a lot of things could have contributed to those failures. If you want a cordless that is crazy easy to maintain, check out the Riccar R10CV.
If you want to improve these videos please cut the awful music and the logos, you are not IBM and just get into it as you are wasting the 60s preview, if you want the logo stick it at the end so you don't block your own content with related videos . Otherwise a good video
They are all sh!te, including Dyson batteries (especially if you use max setting much), because Dyson didn't implement a cell balancing circuit. I have power tool batteries 10 years old (at least 1000 cycles) that still have about 60-70% capacity. I didn't even get 50 cycles from a couple of Dyson batteries, before the run time was considerable less and max setting would only work for a few seconds before cutting out. The after market battery had the same failure, only much sooner. I know it is a balancing problem because I took the packs apart and found the cells to be extremely out of balance. Such a state will not allow the battery to fully charge and the safety circuit will shut the power off very prematurely. Resulting in pathetic capacity. I balanced the batteries with a hobby charger and they work as they should. The only problem is that there isn't enough room inside the battery to add a balancing port, so the batteries can be rebalanced (easily) again after several charges. Dyson uses quality cells, but it's a moot point if those cells become out of balance (and they absolutely will in a series configuration) and there is no balancing circuitry.
I agree that it is a balanced charging issue in part. If you have no balancing and weak cell, eventually the voltage on that cell will drop so low that the BMS won't allow the vacuum to turn on due to a "low voltage" condition. If you happen to get well matched cells. from the factory, this can be avoided. I got a V6 battery that is at least 7 years old and keeps cranking... so I got well matched cells that haven't fallen out of voltage spec yet. So it is largely luck of the draw. In either case, if vac manufacturers are going to continue to sell vacuums, I would hope that they would start building better packs with correct BMS and balancing like power tool companies. Unfortunately, I think that would push the cost of the vacuum above what consumers would be willing to accept. I don't see the vac industry changing any time soon. Hi, based upon your teardown of the genuine item, what would you say to repacking the original unit with fresh, quality cells? I'm an electrical engineer, and know one side of a soldering iron from another - but I've never attempted to crack open a Dyson battery pack. For a start, does the plastic case come apart easily without needing to destroy it? My Dyson run-time is significantly degraded, but I'm not ready to risk destroying it yet ....
This just shows that a well build cell, kept within spec (BMS) will last a very long time :) 8 year old VTC4 from a high drain application, and still at around 1.5ah only down from 2.1ah :)
Well, I'll be honest, on this particular vacuum I think it was luck of the draw. I have not treated this battery well... constantly on the charger, starting charging immediately after using, etc. So in this case I think I got really lucky... it is certainly one of the longest lasting Dyson batteries I have come across. But to your point, VTC4s are pretty fantastic cells. If any cell is up to this duty, it would be these. Thanks for watching and commenting!
MFW I just bought a "9000 mAh" battery for our V6 (for A$29). It appears that I'm going to need to find a way to verify the actual capacity - preferably without having to tear-down the battery pack. I'm not asserting that the vendor is falsely advertising, but if it's 9aH the V6 should run for more than half an hour based on the experience of the tests in this video. Fortunately, if it doesn't yield results that are close to spec, Australian Consumer Law (ACL) is *brutal* for sellers who make false _or misleading_ claims about the stuff they sell. Even if the battery is true to capacity, but results in unsafe operating conditions (e.g., overheating), the fact that the vendor claims that it is suitable for our model, exposes them under the ACL - even if they're located outside Australia. Just to be sure, I always tick 'Australia Only' in the search sidebar on eBay, and "Ships from Australia" on Amazon.
I would agree, there is almost no chance that the pack is 9000 mAh. There isn't even a battery I'm aware of in either the 18650 or 21000 form factors that gets anywhere close to that number. And since the batteries are wired in series, the voltage increases with each cell added, but the capacity remains the same, so 6 2100 mAh cells in series is still 210 aAh. Very interested as to whether you get legal traction on that. I'm not familiar with the Australian system, but would love to hear back if you pursue it. Cheers!

Just FYI, I bought the First Power battery on Amazon based off this video in Jan 2022. Yesterday it exploded and sent fireballs all over my pantry while it was just plugged into the charger.
So sorry to hear that, Troy! I'm glad you are safe. While replacements are cheaper, the OEM batteries are always the safe bet because of quality control and components. It is certainly is a risk/reward analysis when choosing replacement versus OEM. How long was it on the charger?
I'm hoping to test those eventually. My two concerns are the voltage difference (the machine will run at a lower speed) and the low voltage cutoff. I would definitely want an answer on those two points before I recommended them.

Fact is that there are no batteries past 3.5 Ah and the 3.5 Ah batteries are very expensive. 100% of aftermarket batteries for the V6 lie about their capacity ratings and as you said, can change their cells at anytime. I did purchase 2 different aftermarket batteries on Amazon with the sole purpose of removing and spot welding in newer higher capacity, high current cells. I had to return the first one due to it getting stuck on and not responding to the power switch. I didn't check if they use a NC or NO switch but the button is toggled on when the motor is off and toggled off when the motor is on. I then disassembled it and did a non-destructive capacity test using a hobby charger. As expected, they both came in well under their ratings. I left detailed reviews on both of the batteries and was surprised that they still accepted the return after I left a review showing it apart. I have already purchased a few grade B LG 18650 INR rebranded cells and swap out the bad cells. I suspect that the BMS on my original Dyson battery has gone bad.
Yeah, when the cells are quality and the pack fails to charge it is usually the battery pack's PCB that is gone. That's why I have never gone down the road of trying to rebuild Dyson packs because often it is the PCB and if it isn't then I don't know how long after it will last. It certainly seems like an area that Dyson has overlooked, because you don't run into this many issues in other industries like cordless power tools which have very reliable BMS systems now. I'm trying to find a replacement battery for my V8 Absolute. OEM direct from the website is out of stock. Going off your review for the V6, I looked up the FirstPower V8 batteries. And it doesn't seem like they review farmed their product. Where as the other ones on Amazon have hundreds of fake reviews. No reviews on the FirstPower of it blowing up yet.. Going to take the hit and buy it. See what happens. It seems the main issues with non OEM batteries are that they eventually just die, the vacuum runs on its own eventually and burns out the motor/battery, and people are unsure if it stops charging when full. My V8 barely runs 10 minutes on low, before running out. :( Wish me luck. Thanks for the review!
Just received the First Power. Although your review seems very promising with these, some Amazon reviews say otherwise. Everything from generic no brand cells, to under powered ones dying several months after. Unfortunately their warranty is only for 30 days and the reviews which units got replaced under warranty are very few. I figured to take a chance, hoping on a good set. 🤞
Very interesting! The local vacuum store " recommended" the First Power. But when I checked the reviews on Amazon there were lots of returns. However, the customer service was rated as superb. That is, they will easily replace any defective batteries. Going by reviews, I went for the DEWOKI. I have not installed it and know nothing about batteries and AMPS. Any thoughts? Thoughts are that all those people don't know anything thing about batteries and would rather not write any reviews at all because all they have to say is of no value, those reviews have no meaning
I ordered the First Power 4.0ah back at the end of July. So far I'm impressed with its performance. I initially charged it fully and we've used it a hand full of times without recharging. I've read that they recommend to initially conduct a full charge and then use it until it fully depletes and then fully charge it again. This helps the memory capacity on the cells. Obviously and mostly important is to charge it once it cools down from using and also use it only when it has cooled down from charging. This supposedly prolongs the life of the cells. I'll try to give another long yerm update.
Thanks for the feedback, I would love to hear a follow-up! I truly think that the two worst things owners do with batteries is 1) charge them directly after use and 2) leave them on the charger. I've got 8 stick vacs now that I use for testing and only replaced one battery, but I've avoided both of those pitfalls. Hope the First Power keeps up the good work!
