Not only would you save on the cost of running the car, but a) save on time (if you drove you would want to find extra time for keeping fit); and b) possibly save the cost of a gym membership; and c) save on emissions and help save the planet :-)

I live and work in Birmingham, my average time in the car to cover the 9 mile commute is 55 minutes, however on my E-bike (chipped of course) I can do the commute as fast as 32 minutes. I agree I feel far fresher when I get to work and again its another car off the road.

What about adding the time for getting ready? Having a shower and changing into work clothes when arriving at work? All that can potentially add another 30 mins onto the trip? I'd love to commute on my ebike, but the time all adds up. But the ebike is obviously better, cheaper, just not quicker.

That is, hands down, the most frustrating thing. Biking is such a joy, but it's just so scary when you have to bike in a city that doesn't have proper separation. For my commute, I can hopefully take a longer road around the town, nearing the lake, and have a safer and more enjoyable ride.
@markt2831

If you are in a suburb and commuting into a town or city centre in rush hour I'd bet that the e-bike will be the fastest mode of transport. Certainly is where I live. Car 25-35 mins, Bus 30-35 mins (40 - 45mins on a bad day), e-bike 22 mins. A lot more pleasant on the bike (mostly side roads or cycle lanes) plus fitness/wellbeing & environment benefits.

I used to commute on my MTB to work and I loved it, only downside is the sweat but just bring extra clothes and you are good. Now I ride a 125cc scooter and it saves me a lot of time, that I use to actually go to the woods and MTB my way into happiness. So to conclude, Bikes, E-bikes are a way cheaper, easier, environmentally friendly way to commute aaand the make you happier and healthier so, to me, it is a no brainer. Leave the cars for people that cannot ride bikes. Happy trails:).

The main reason people take cars is because you can use them any time. A bike to work is ok if everything is perfect. The second it rains or snows and you are screwed. Plus parking is way easier with a car. A bike you can chain it to something, but are inside worrying if it will be there when you get out.

I have done this before, rode to work three days, drove two days so I know the times well. It took me around 40 - 45 min in the car (parked), and around 50 min on the bike. You then have to factor in getting changed and being at your desk - that bit often gets left out of these discussions. Once I got used to it, I definitely preferred the bike.

If you need to commute more than 25mins on car you either work at the wrong place or leave at the wrong place. 54min commute on bicycle is not sustainable for many. A good bike commute should take 30-40min at a nice pace 10-15Km/h avrg. Work should never be more than 10Km from home. 4-7Km being a good number.

Will be commuting on my ebike as soon as the office reopens in September. It’s going to be really interesting how it goes. Car commute is around 45 mins and I know bike will be longer (estimating an hour) but I can either choose a road route over some huge hills or off-road along an old railway line. And then variations on each. Looking forward to comparing the different routes.

Here's a better idea for a test: Log your commute for some time say 2-4 weeks irrespective of the mode of transport. Just like you start your Garmin for every bike ride, time your car commute also. After some weeks crunch the numbers and averages and then do some conclusions. Like average time spent commuting, heartrate, average moving speed on both or more forms of transport etc. Now you had so many variables making massive differences like fueling the car which surely does not happen on every commute to work. Also traffic lights cause massive variance in time and especially if you respect the lights on the bike or not.
@tobyehillier

I've done that myself and it's consistent over the same distance. The variables average out

My commute into Wellington, New Zealand is about 10Km, but dropping 800m in the first 3K. Driving in usually takes 20 minutes plus parking time on a good day at rush hour Mazda RX8, 200HP, coupe. Driving in, speed hardly gets above 50Kph. Since October, Ive been riding my ebike, a 300watt conversion kit added to my trusty old mountain bike, but Ive set it up for commuting with more street friendly tyres, fenders and a carrier rack. Riding in takes about 17-20 minutes. However, its the drive home where the bike kicks ass. With the ebike, climbing the massive hill to home only takes me 20 minutes. Driving home in the car is usually longer in rush traffic at the end of the day. Also, when I ride in and home, I don't bother with the gym, so theres another 40 mounts in my day saved.

For the last five years i have used between one and two tanks of gas per year, I also own two e bikes. It took me decades to achieve this lifestyle and i love it. For me cars and the whole driving scene suck so much. I can hang one hundred dollars worth of groceries from my handlebar on my weekly supermarket run. One e bike is throttle only and one is throttle and pedal assist. In my opinion there is no contest, pedal assist and throttle together is the way to go, sorry European lawmakers but we disagree concerning a throttle. Having a throttle is way safer than pedal assist. Here in San Diego i love riding the dirt trails in our many canyons and i just turned 77.
@CampGareth
@CampGareth 4 года назад
Your throttle and pedal assist ebike, is it torque sensing? I've never used a throttle ebike but if I need more power from the motor I really put some force onto the pedals which the motor then detects and increases power output. I can see a throttle being better than cadence detection on/off pedal assist because it's the only nuanced control you have.

yup though such a bike, possibly with a route change, is likely to be spending a lot more of its time above the assistance point so a E-gravel bike may not make much difference if at all, though the short sharp climbs of that area if commuting may not appeal! I do agree with the point that bikes are very uniform with very little variation in time unlike most other forms.

When you do the cost analysis, you should do it for the bike too. As you say, depreciation of the bike, maintenance, etc. Also, if for the car case not only include the trip cost, but also you consider depreciation: it means you imply that you don't use the car for anything else, or in other words that you are willing not to have a car at all.

EVERY TIME there is a clean and clear commuting route without cars, even if it is 8 Km (5 mi) longer (maybe more) than car route, it is far better for me to ride it instead of any other option of commuting. I will go there permanently. Slightly hilly or flat terrain riding with clean air is a key factor to get bike riding addicted. Best one way urban daily route commuting might be no longer than 60' to 80', 15 to 25 Km (max. 16 mi) for most of the people; I guess. Right daily food/drink ammount and quality makes things possible and lighter. There is no need to add sleeping hours beyond regular person need.

My drive to work, is 10 mins and 99% of the time no traffic, i fuel up once a month and parking is free, i get work clean and wide awake because i go bed early and get up 90 mins before i start work. If i go on my bike it takes 20 mins going and and at least 30 mins to get home due to more hills. It usually rains in the uk or its windy which are not ideal conditions when you have to work at the end of the journey, plus all the things i need to take to work, and my bike has to be left outside and loads of bikes get stolen so most people just by a cheap £50 bike of ebay for that reason, everyone's journey and circumstances are different, i have tried driving, cycling, walking and a motorbike, buses aren't a option, car wins every time and i would say the bike is a better option than a motorbike, this video was best case scenario for the bike, also it was a nice sunny day which doesn't happen to often in the uk. Also what about people who travel to work at night, car is a much safer and convenient way to get about, good luck if ya want to go the suppermarket after work if your on a bike.

I do... Same distance, but from Roundwood in the wicklow mountains to Bray, about 20k south of Dublin, Ireland. I've a straight drop of about 300m on the way in where I can do the same speed on the bike as in the car. The journey takes 20 mins in the car and 45 mins on the bike (Giant fathom e3 400wh 36v). It's the journey home where the bike comes into play, getting back up the 300m in one go.... I've a choice of different routes and some routes I'm down to first gear and boost mode. The good part is that, I borrowed 2 grand over three years to pay for the bike and if I cycle to work twice a week then the offset of petrol costs actually pays for the bike!

Time is money. Just factor in the time you work for the fuel and car wear. OTOH, riding bike to work requires a shower in summer and dressing up properly in winter/rainy season. But still, I bike to work whenever possible, even with wind, rain and child. And I also agree that travel time is more predictable, provided a good flat protection system.

I've recently started e-mtbing to work, previoisly doing a mix of cycling and driving. E-bike takes 50 mins (15-20 faster than nornal bike) plus 10 mins to go shower, get changed etc. Car takes 35 mins plus 8 min walk from car park plus 10 min shower at home. So bike is about 15 mins slower return trip per day but I get 1:40 exercise for that and it is WAY more enjoyable. The costs are far less clear cut and it would have been good to see a realistic comparison. A new £700 battery pack every 2 years, insurance on the e-bike (unless you can afford to replace out of pocket in case of accident or theft), electricity (probably negligable), depreciation on e-mtb, servicing and maintenance (including chains, cassettes, lubrication, inner tubes, tyres, cables etc.) and even clothing worn out on bike. I would have been genuinely interested to see a comparison. I dislike cars and see them as a necessary (in rural areas) evil to be minimised as far as possible, but it's a pity that this video isn't really a very balanced argument.

I did my 29 km commute in Japan by Van Moof S3 ebike. Using setting No. 3 which seems to cap the speed around 24 km/h, I got to work in 75 minutes. I rode at a very leisurely pace enjoying the views of the river and surrounding farmland. I could probably save five minutes by using setting No. 4. By car it would take about 37 minutes. So the bike took double the time of the car. We have great roads in Japan and the road I use is a four-lane with no toll. In the video it seems like the bike and car are roughly the same commute time. I think the reality for most people is that the car is twice as fast if your country has halfway decent infrastructure.

That eBike costs more than my van I've had for 15 years and done >140k miles in since I got it. And I need a car/van anyway so have to pay its tax and insurance regardless. Bike to work is far more fun and good for you so still wins regardless of any costs or time on paper though (even though I currently have no e-bike, it's all pedal power and have to shower at the end). The biggest killer to stop bike commuting is always the snooze button on the alarm clock (or the rain). So for me the best trick is have my bike in the van if I drive, leave the van and ride home, then you have no option to snooze the alarm clock the next day as you can't drive! Still no bike journeys 'lost' either as I need my van to get to trails after work on wednesdays to go riding with mates, so the van is already there when I turn up on my bike. :)

Included the cost of the bike but not the car, add sticker price or monthly finance of the car to those outgoings as well as a car's maintenance costs and that 4 mins is even more economical

Stopping for fuel was cheating a bit, that hardly happens on the "average" car commute, so the realistic difference on that "one" run was likely 10 minutes.

I have health issue like seizures where I can not drive a car. But with the electric bicycle even it cost me a lot of money to get one this allow me to travel back and forward to school as well to the food store to get food without needing Uber or Lyft which cost more money. Thanks for letting me know about this the only down side of riding a electric bicycle or a regular bicycle when it rains that the hard part.

Not sure it’s all about how long it takes. Take into account the high cost of the car v the bike and the added bonus of enjoying the bike and getting incidental exercise at the same time.

Do the same thing with an old Nissan Leaf or Renault Zoe and the cost comes down dramatically, especially if you don't need to pay £15 a day parking. Also, you need to add in the time it takes to store the bike, have a shower and make yourself look pretty.

The price of maintenance on a bike a few dollars a year for lube, tires, Electricity and brake pads. That would be cheaper. The most expensive part would be the tires.

My commute is about same distance but in Country Australia. On my loaded ECR it takes just under an hour. An ebike would be ok on the way home to help fight fatigue on the 4th ot 5th day. If I drive my 36 year old V8 Land Rover it takes 18 minutes. I ride most days. I would like ebike prices to come down and the limit go up for commuting. For me it would make more sense to buy a motorcycle

@@tobyehillier Wasn't talking about the bit we saw at start but it was how he made a big deal of having to stop at the lights going through town in car making it sound as though it wasn't also a thing that he'd have to do on a bike. I'm fairly sure that during that ride on the EMtB at some point he would have come to at least a few sets of lights but they didn't show them or even if not then the way he was trying to sell the bike over the car using the fact that he'd had to stop a few times at lights in the car was a big negative basically making it sound as if it wasn't a issue for a person on a bike. It just all seemed a bit disingenuous and very pushed to make the bike favourite when it isn't and wasn't needed. Just being totally fair and honest and treating both the same would have still made the point about how and where using a Emtb to commute to work was better and the many benefits and positives. Just in terms of cost, fitness, fun and the environment its hands down better it doesn't need false advertising.

Felt he was biased towards the bike. Took an age to get his ticket and the time jumped from 38 minutes to 50 minutes by time he got to the office - he did state that it was only a 5 minute walk from the car park so I don't know why it took 12 minutes. Also, there was some pretty hairy riding in that and I'm not saying it was dangerous, but certainly not 100% safe (rattling through dark tunnels with no lights with joggers oncoming etc) and he looked to be gunning the bike the whole way. Also the point as made below, he should have had fuel and not had to stop. I think the comparison could have been made had it been fairer; that while the car is going to be a good deal quicker, you'll still get there in reasonable time on the bike (without having an accident). Liked for the entertainment and effort though.

Didnt look like you were commuting at rush hour in the car...looked closer to 11am with the dash clock. Derestrict that ebike and smash the route in and have far more fun. Once a week I ride in, its 22 miles, 35-45mins in the car and 1hr 15min to 1hr 35mins on the bike...but its 90% off road on the bike along the canal tow path, lots of people causing me to slow down.
