Welcome back to Jon's RC!
This is the new E-flite SR-71 Blackbird. We've had this plane for over a month but because of gloomy skies on the weekends I have not been able to fly her. With the all black paint and it's relatively small size, she will be difficult to see and find orientation on gloomy grey skies.
This bird is definitely not a beginner jet. You will need some experience flying other small fast jets already as she is a handful to fly! You will also want the freshest battery you can get preferably a brand new battery as I found out in my maiden flight!
Overall, she is an awesome jet but she does take experience to fly. Like the E-Flite F-14 Tomcat, this bird is very power hungry and really really needs the most powerful and freshest battery you can give her.
This is what we used for this video:

Oooohhh. I was waiting for this one. ;) Someone at my local field maiden one last Saturday. It was as quick as your 2nd flight and distances were probably about the same as yours (around 100-150 yards)? So, maybe it is the battery. He ended up crashing it about two minutes into the flight and I noticed a few times he was losing orientation. Great point on the licensing with Lockheed and the license possibly expiring sometime in a few years.

I’ve never flown a plane where I constantly had to consciously watch orientation. You can’t blink during a turn because your eyes will play tricks on you. This is where you just have to trust your instincts and experience on your sticks and just know that it’s going the right way because you’ve done that maneuver a hundred times before!

Rewatching this and it seems like, so long as you keep it contrasted against the sky, it's fine. Once it's in front of trees and whatever's in the background, it gets hard to see.

I want one, but I also don't want one... 🤔

This plane is an awesome centerpiece on our shelf and family and friends don't believe me when I tell them that she flies. They think it's just a beautiful stationary model. Now that I understand her flight characteristics, she is a relatively easy jet to fly and land!

@@JonsRC Yeah it's beautiful. I just don't know how often I'll actually fly it...

Jon you need to hand launch it buddy. Like the F-14, it is much better without the drag of the gear. Personally, considering the size, I think it flies pretty darn good, but I do like the F-14 better. Nice video.

The license with Lockheed Martin has absolutely nothing to do with how long a model is in the market.

IRL the SR71 is/was an amazing machine. But translating to RC at this scale seems like it would require a lot of compromise. It LOOKS great, I'll give 'em that. But I think planes like this need to be modeled at a larger scale to do them justice. I guess it's a power to weight thing. Gotta hand it to Eflite for at least trying. I mean it does actually fly, so that's something.

100% Agree with you! At a minimum this should have been a twin 64mm or a twin 80mm. I had to maintain 100% throttle the entire flight just to keep it afloat. This really needed more power!

swap a x fly 4s 64mm in there. My freewing f22 64mm was dog 💩 now it can actually maintain flight even when it hits low voltage. Before when it hit low voltage you just had to watch it fall and pray. It also hits 100mph Everytime my highest is 107.8. Did the same with my freewing 70mm f16. Completely different animals. Xfly edfs are just better.
