A few demos from the orchestral expander module E-mu Proteus/2, among other things famously used by Mark Snow for the whistle sound in the X-Files theme (patch #125 "Whistl'n Joe"), and capable of extremely realistic orchestral emulations, even today, thanks to the excellent Emulator III library samples onboard. (Touch of hall reverb from Roland M-10DX mixer). [controller keyboard: Roland W-30]

The Proteus/2 defined the way children's television music sounded in the 1990s. It was affordable and had high-quality samples; the affordability may explain why it was used by so many composers!

Totally agree, I have just bought a Proteus 2 on EBay and it's on it's way. My Roland U-220 arrived in the post this morning although I have to try and reset it via midi Syssex commands as it's not working properly. I might also buy a Proteus 1 in the not too distant future even though I only want it for a few sounds the Proteus 2 doesn't have. I can't wait to start midi sequencing with my Proteus 2 and U-220.

Correct. Haim Saban and Shuki Levy also used an E-mu Proteus 2 Orchestral for many projects throughout the early 1990s. Original production works such as Mighty Morphin Power Rangers as well as some Anime adaptation dubs of theirs. Jeff Fisher also used an E-mu Proteus 2 for Are You Afraid of the Dark? towards 47 episodes he composed for, as he used patches such as the snare drum assorted sounds from Percussion 1 (Patch 58) and as well as Pizzicato 1 (Patch 17), Xylophone (Patch 54) and certain others.

I recently bought a Proteus 2 and a Roland U-220 so I now have 3 19" rack modules. Even though today we have Kontakt and even amazing free VST instruments like Spitfire Labs, BBCSO Discover and Decent Sampler there is still some magic connecting these old sound modules to a USB midi interface to use in any DAW or midi sequencer.

Exactly what we’re going through in our studio at the moment! It’s so fascinating to see how new tech unlocks potential in all this gear that people basically consider obsolete nowadays. I’ll very rarely open up a VST if I have a shitty old rack unit that does basically the same thing, be it for best or worst 😂

To add to that, modern sound libraries have so much control and tweakability now, that it can often make a chore out of the process of making music. Often, you have to do quite a bit of work to get a usable performance from today's sounds. In contrast, there's nothing quite like taking one of these sound modules from the 90s (by Roland, Korg, Yamaha, E-MU or others), dialling in a ready-to-go sound and hitting the record button. In fact, I'm making a template of purely old-school module sounds for sketching and idea generation because the sounds are quick to load and use - and if an idea sounds good with those old sounds, then putting in the work with newer sound libraries will just make the idea sound even better when you start developing it.

The Proteus 2 was just one of the midi sound modules Bob Singleton used on Barney, I think he also used a Roland Sound Canvas SC-55, I'm pretty sure the drums in the theme tune came from and Alesis drum machine ( possibly an SR-16 ) and Bob Singleton also used a Roland R8. Joseph Phillips did the music for Season 4 in 1997 but as the tracks have been Equed and smoothly mixed it's difficult to hear the tones of many of the instruments but I recognised the marimba and flute from a Proteus 1, clarinet from Proteus 2, Alesis drums and a couple of Roland SC-88 sounds. I also left comments on a couple of Barney videos if your interested. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uUU384Bqij4.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gdz6ISW4n5Q.html

The strings section waves on this thing really dip into the rosin and you hear a rich warm sound that still cannot be emulated by other string libraries. They may not be the best toe to toe against the newer stuff but they are UNIQUE in their signature sound....And if played correctly with a little knowledge of how real players play, man you can fool the best of the best ears out there thinking it was a real ORCHESTRA.....

The irony is that a Heinz advert came up on this video, the one where a man tried to take his supply of Heins baked beans with him abroad but he's not allowed them on the plane so he spends his entire holiday weaping about it, really? They should either bring back the Heinz adverts from 1996 or make modern adverts in that same style but use reuse that same jingle. In fact I think they should go back to using the Emu Proteus/2 on TV adverts because I would jump at the chance to compose music for TV adverts and get paid for it especially as I'm now unemployed.

That's because it IS the sounds from those shows. The composers used an E-mu Proteus 2 Orchestral for those shows. Mighty Morphin Power Rangers also used it as well, as Haim Saban and Shuki Levy used that for many projects throughout the early 90s.

I think Roly Mo Show was either done with real instruments or with a more modern synthesizer of that time. Possibly a Yamaha Motif, the guitar sounds like a typical Yamaha Motif guitar. It may have even been done with VST instruments including Halion as at that time for many producers sound modules were starting to be phased out with with VST instruments. Unless some of the incidental music used Proteus sounds. With more modern TV programs it's not so easy to tell.

Just got the Proteus 2 for my son after he saw your vid. How do you have yours wired up? Do you have it directly hooked up to the keyboard? I'm using a Yamaha YPG-235 with USB to a PC using Reaper. Thanks!
@SynthManiaDotCom
@SynthManiaDotCom 5 лет назад
Rob, you'll just need a simple USB-to-MIDI (usb to din sync MIDI) interface, since the Proteus doesn't have usb but only the older style 5-pin din sync MIDI. Then, plug the USB end of the interface to another USB port on your computer, plug the din sync MIDI Out of the interface to the MIDI In of the Proteus, and plug the MIDI In of the interface to the MIDI Out of the Proteus. In Reaper, choose the YPG-235 USB MIDI as your MIDI In port, and choose the USB-to-MIDI interface as your MIDI Out going to the Proteus

I don't have Reaper at the moment (I used to have it a few years back) but basically, you want to create a new MIDI track in Reaper, and select the Yamaha USB MIDI for Input (or "any/all MIDI input) and the Mio Ioconnect for MIDI Output
@Rob94hawk
@Rob94hawk 5 лет назад
Did that and I still can't play the sounds. I plugged the stereo output to speakers and I can hear the demo just fine. The only thing I can think of is there's a setting on this keyboard that I need to change but my manual doesn't help. If I connect the Yamaha directly to the proteus would it work even though the proteus is analog?

Tikkabilla used a Roland JV or XV sound module. I thought so. The Roland JV and XV sounds were used more in the late 90s and early 2000s. Roly Mo show could well have been done with a Korg Triton, Yamaha Motif or even VST instruments. Or possibly a combination of synthesized and real instruments.

There was another sound module (or expansion card) that had more dissonant and horror-ish orchestral sounds, that also was all over 90s soundtracks, would anybody happen to know which one(s) that could've been? Among many examples, you can hear it in the soundtracks for StarCraft, Dark Reign, Descent 2, Fallout 1/2, Dragon Age: Origins, Quake 2 and I believe it also appears in the Lexx soundtrack. The bands In the Nursery, The Protagonist and Hypocrisy also used it quite a bit. Some of the signature sounds seem to be some really raspy, low brasses, a downwards arpeggiated string sequence with a lot of delay, metallic percussion, haunting mixed choirs, orchestral hits with heavy cymbal use, and a lot of pitch bending low strings, horns and prepared piano kind of stuff. Seemed more oriented towards imitating Penderecki, Ligety or Schönberg kinda stuff than John Williams.

Would the String Sequence You're referring to be this one? - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uC46_T9b3zs.html at 00:51. [Sorry for the horrible Audio quality. Sounds like the Uploader Increased the amplitude...] Because I've been looking for that Sample for years. The Score for this version of Dragon Ball Z was done by Ron Wasserman, of Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers fame, and He told Me that He had used a Proteus 2 on the Soundtrack for It. :) Wasserman's Score for Dragon Ball Z Is super Intense and dark so It could be what You're referring to. There Is also another Sample that I have heard a lot which Is a Flute/Shakuhachi sound. I've heard It In Dragon Ball Z, the Game "Spud!", the Crypt Keeper Cartoon etc. which Is this one... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OGmTnihUvYA.html Been hunting for these Sounds for years but haven't had much luck! Update: Seems like it could've been Peter Siedleczek's "Orchestral Colours" released as an AKAI sample CD by Best Service in 1994. I guess some of the sounds could've made it to some of the Siedleczek ROMs for various romplers as well (though none of the sounds seem to be in E-Mu's 32MB Siedleczek ROM for the Proteus 2000 line, but then 32 MB is extremely limited compared to the upwards of 700 MB you can fit on a CD).

Most of the music in Fun song factory was done with a Roland Sound Canvas. The first Fun song factory video used an SC-55 for most of the music but in one of the nursery rhymes I noticed the flute sounded like an Emu Proteus flute. In Fun Song Factory 2 and the rest of the Fun song factory live shows Liz Kitchen used an SC-88 and also a Roland JV-1080 for sounds like "Flying Waltz" and "Jimmy Dee" not to mention "Dance with me from Party Time was done completely on a Roland JV-1080. Liz Kitchen also did the music for most of the GMTV series but for the episodes composed by Graham Pike I think he used an Alesis keyboard and possibly an SR-16 drum machine but I think he also recorded real guitars and that cup mute trumpet could have also been a real trumpet.

I have a JV-1080 fitted with the Orchestral expansion board and the Proteus 2 which I just bought. I also have a Roland U-220 and a an MC-505 groovebox as part of that stack. The funny thing is before I bought the Orchestral SRJV board I thought the Proteus 2 sounds were from the Roland SRJV Orchestral board. The Proteus 2 has more realistic sounding woodwinds and brighter brass sounds as well as realistic percussion sounds but the Roland JV has nicer, sparkly bell pad sounds and generally sounds like basses, pianos and saxophones sound better on a Roland sound module. I was also going to buy a Proteus 1 or Proteus FX just for the marimba but I managed to create a marimba patch on my Proteus 2.
