I made a whole soundtrack for a short film in the late eighties with a Proteus and when I listen to it today it's incredible how good it sounded. Thank you.
@@fender1000100 Saying that the Proteus is still the best overall sound module ever made is perhaps not very realistic. The Proteus has no chance whatsoever against the Roland Integra 7 and similar more modern modules. Even a Yamaha MU2000 is far more capable and technically superior than a Proteus in many ways. The Proteus doesn’t have a decent set of build-in effects, not even reverb. All it has is a bit of chorus and that’s it. That alone is pretty sub-standard in terms of sound modules, even for the time when the Proteus was released. I mean, even the Roland MT-32 / D-110 / U-110 (1987/1988) and similar modules that were released during the pre-General MIDI era have reverb built in, but the Proteus 2-series (1990) doesn’t. Still though, the Proteus did sound quite good for its time especially when you started adding a touch of reverb and other effects externally in order to beef up the sound. But today, the Proteus is quite outdated and there are lots of better options out there. Even a Roland JV-1080 from 1994 is far superior when put against a Proteus 1 or 2. So no, the Proteus is not the best sound module ever made. Maybe it was one of the best for a short while back in 1990, but a lot of interesting alternatives started to show up already in the early 90’s, and around 10 years later there was no way anyone could realistically say that the Proteus 1 is still the best thing around.
To this day there hasnt been a greater sound module than the PROTEUS 1. I remember first hearing this in 1989. Knowing all you would need is this a multitimbral controller keyboard and a sequencer. And you could make incredible music. Outstanding PIANO CHOIR STRINGS CLASSICAL GUITAR BASSES DRUMS/PERCUSSION And editable too. Just a magical module. And at the second had prices today. They're a steal...
I can really hear the harpsichord that Super Mario 64 uses. It sounds really good in this module. It's one of my favorite instruments in the game and I'm glad to have finally the chance to hear where some instruments originated from
@@bravedoodle1333 Oh nice on the finding! For a second, I was looking more into the harpsichord instrument and it turns out, it is an acoustic guitar layered with a bite cycle. Seems like the guitar was emulating a harpsichord in its own right
The Baritone Sax patch from this module was used in "Those Without the Will to Live" and "The Epoch - Wings of Time" from Chrono Trigger. It was also used in the main theme of that game.
great demo of a classic module - love the E-mu stuff near the beginning there was some crackling on the right side, sounds like when one of my jacks on older gear needs some De-Oxit :-)
I don't understand why so many people dislike or even hate these Emu Proteus sound modules, you still can buy these modules quite cheaply on EBay if your lucky. These Emu modules are still good as a starter instrument bank and I have heard the sounds are also editable so you can still use it as a pad synth and generally turn any sound into a synth. These Proteus modules also condensed the same samples from the Emulator's disks so these Proteus modules are also good as a more affordable and smaller alternative to an Emulator.
@5:44 sMOOTH rHODES - The rompler sounds on this rack are far better than I expected - I will probably pick one up cheap to add to my rig to layer with a Yamaha Reface DX
Thank you Paulo, it's so wonderful to hear these classic sounds performed! Unfortunately, apart from the occasional ESI-32 sampler, I haven't seen an E-mu on sale in a very long time. So I found the software synthesizer Proteus VX to be an excellent replacement which like the Proteus X2, has excellent sounds, the famous Z-plane filters (from E-mu Morpheus) and awesome programmable effects.
I recognize several patches from the original Mind's Eye soundtrack. :-) This module would have been hot off the assembly line at the time. Not quite a decade later, many of those samples would be in my Sound Blaster AWE32's ROM. Memories...
Ron Wasserman apparently used this when he composed music for MMPR and I can definitely recognize 4:07 (or something similar) being used for one of the many cues playing during Rita Repulsa's segments.
In 2019 I very nearly bought the Proteus/1 Plus Orchestral which is basically a Proteus/1 and 2 in one module. I did consider buying a Proteus/1 in addition to the Proteus/2 but in the end I decided just to stick with the Proteus/2 since I mainly only wanted this module for the marimba sound but it is possible to get a marimba sound very close to the Proteus/1 by editing patch 70 and assigning the xylophone tone to both parts. I also managed to synthesize the bell pad close but for stuff like the pianos basses and saxophone I prefer the Roland U-220.
The Proteus 1 was used extensively for the Goldeneye movie soundtrack. There's another sound on here referred to as Infinite One that is all over that and the N64 game's soundtrack.
This is the same console used by Joe Phillips/Joseph Phillips (JP Productions, inc.) for Seasons 4-6 in Barney & Friends. The instruments are: 1. 000 Acoustic Piano 2. 017 Verb Flute 3. 045 Wide Marimba
Great sounds . I just picked up one of these for $25. I haven't received it yet but I'm excited. Quick question, does it allow you to stack sounds? Thanks
E-MU provided some sample sets as soundfonts for the soundblaster advanced wave effects cards like the AWE32 and the AWE64. they also made a couple of their own PC GM compatible chipsets and used them on both value branded creative cards and their own audiopci series of sound cards, im pretty sure the samples came from the proteus library
It's a killer bass patch for anything from Electro FUNK to techno. My mate used it to do a remake of Mjs wanna be starting something. And Snaps RHYTHM is a dancer. And it sounded amazing. And what makes the proteus really awesome. Is you can edit the sounds quite extensively. So there might be a sound on there that's close to what you want. And with some tweaking you can get it spot on and save it. The proteus to own is the PROTEUS 1 XR. You can save 256 user patches. When I first got it. The first thing I did was edit the drums to make a killer electro KIT. Then that bass patch. I rounded the attack on it. So it's pure moog style electro FUNK. And then I took the orch hit and flattened the sound to get that killer Fairlight type effect as used on Planet rock. Just an amazing module.
i liked the style starting at 1:45 till about 2:20 something(the 2 guitars)...can you reccomend any classic rock pop tunes with that style(or piano)...i just can't find the songs that fit my VST yet(there are millions) BTW it's the Proteus VX...cool but, like I said" millions of sounds in the preset....have a good day!!
This product is going for $39 on ebay. Enough to make me look it up. I have lots of synths but I'm in the market for PORTABLE ones. (bad back). People told me "sound Modules".
Does your PROTEUS/1 have a bad right channel output? Seems to be dropping out and crackling a bit and made me start checking my computer for problems! ;-)
Very attractive sounds? Could you tel me what's the name of the Clean Guitar at 2:09 please ? It sounds like a Stratocaster guitar with echoes... Very nice sound !
I dig mine out every few years in the vain hope I'll discover some magic I'd somehow missed. By far the least capable synth I own - far better ROMples on my cheap Yamaha home keyboard.
Does anyone else experience a low output volume when playing their Proteus? I can't seem to find much about it. Otherwise, great sound and a real bargain.
I have always suspected that preset 040 was utilized in the first three seasons of the X-Files for all of the brooding, yet tense, underscoring. Perhaps you agree?
I don't know, I would have to do some comparison - but I do know for sure (it was on a keyboard magazine interview) that Mark Snow used the Proteus/2 for the whistle: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sfvCuXOyry8.html
@@SynthManiaDotCom Very interesting, thank you! Up until today I was certain that the whistle sound from that particular score was from a DX7. I stand corrected. If I can find a SySex file online, I will attempt to load it to my Proteus/1. Here's to hoping that it is forward compatible...Thank you for proving that even with the most humble of synthesizers, the possibilities are endless, and new sounds may always be discovered...Best regards
I've read that Mark Snow used the popular (especially during the '90) Korg Wavestation synth to build up the X-Files soundtrack. Also David Wise used it in Donkey Kong Country series.
Getting an error message when I use mine . It operates for a little while then an error message pops up. I wonder if it's because I want to use multiple channels for my songs or because I want that as well as use my sampler and drum machine with it? I turn it off and come back. It works fine for a while and stops again? What's the deal? Is it some sort of midi thing? Too much at one time?
My beloved Proteus 3 suddenly darkened the screen and began to emit percussive noises knock knock knock knock, it doesn't smell burning, it was working normally, I turned it off and after uncovering it, I checked it and closed it again, it turned on normally but after a few seconds the error continues, do you know what it will be? some help? Thank you
