While taxing aft to the waist catapults, an E2C Hawkeye began to slide on the oily flight deck. This was caught on the PLAT (Pilot Landing Aid Television System) camera. I do not know who the guy was pulling the fuel tank that went through the propeller like a banana in a blender, but I know ABH3 Scott Earmest was sitting in the driver’s seat of the tractor when the propeller blades went across the hood. Amazingly there were no injuries.

I was on deck, I was a Plane Captain with VA-35 at the time the E-2 came to rest on the horizontal stabilizers of one of our KA-6D’s. I will never forget the sound of this when it happened, made me sick to my stomach because I was sure someone got hurt. We were all lucky that night. Shit like this is why we always said, “Head on a swivel”.

a buddy of mine was driving the tractor that the E2's blade went across the hood. definitely scary shit. hard to believe this was over 30 years ago, and I was a bright eyed 20 year old kid.

jkaposi that's the only PLAT video I have. All the rest of my videos were taken by my camcorder. So far I have 23 videos uploaded. You'll probably like my AV8 Harrier landings. Wait until I think it's number 7 landing. It comes in way off center directly over me.

Well mike, of all your vids posted , this is at night when I was on deck. I remember this incident rather well. Seeing everyone running around on deck and from what I remember, I can see myself briefly in the vid going inside the hummer to check things out. That was a pretty exciting night to say the least. Even though that was over 25 years ago, something like that kinda sticks in your head. Hope your doing well. Take it easy. Joe.

And Earmest was sitting on that tractor when the prop went across it. I don't remember how long it lasted, but he stopped stuttering for quite a while after that.

Yep, during Desert Storm. I was in VAW-125 when it happened. CAW-17 in the Red Sea. Little to no non-skid on the flight deck by that point.

VAW-125 604, was taxing after when a tomcat on the bow launched, the deck was slick yes, and the jet blast caught the wings just right and kicked it down the flight deck, we had almost the exact same incident on the Sara on the 87' med cruise but that time the prop sliced thru the wing of a C-2A COD from VR-24 and they had to call a NADEP team out to repair the damage so we could fly it off the ship

Thank you for posting that. My brother was on that E-2C and I didn't know the video existed. He complained that the deck was so worn out it made flight ops even more dangerous. Again thanks for posting. AO3 Ed

Hey thanks, i worked it out from your other vids, they are awesome BTW....I'm an Aussie carrier vet (76-82), i love all things naval air to this day. Do you have any other PLAT scenes?
@jkaposi

I have seen them all, and downloaded the best flight ops ones (hope you don't mind), they look great on the big TV.

They showed it several times on our closed circuit TV, so one day I hooked my camcorder up to the TV and copied it. One of my jobs was right below the PLAT calling the spots of the planes to Flight Deck Control.

Any chance for exact date of this accident ? Thanks.
@mikemiller3995
@mikemiller3995 4 года назад
No, I did not keep a journal. But it was after Desert Storm had begun because the non-skid was gone in many places which left a slippery deck. So it was most likely in February 1991.

This is the USS Saratoga CV-60 1990-1991, during the Gulf War. We were stationed in the Red Sea. I don't remember the exact date, but I would say it was in the first part of 1991 when the non-skid on our deck was missing in many spots leaving patches of oily steel.
@dolley70

I was on Sara on the way back from Nam, probably the slickest deck after 9 months of ops BUT... was glad it was when we crossed back and I was Wog crossing the line for the first time. Glad no one was hurt above. To the OP, I too worked in Flight Deck control for the last 3 months of my hitch. Best 3 months of TAD of my enlistment.
