In Episode 37 of Restoring Christine, we repair a hidden section of the cowl at the firewall, making sure that the floor and toe board are water-tight. It's a lot of work to fix something that no one will ever see, but it had to be done!

I just came across your channel today. And I'm glad. I need to work on this exact same problem but on my '69 AMC Rambler. And this is very inspiring and motivational. Thank you for sharing!

Glad to be helpful! I have a lot of content on metal work, but soon we'll get into body and paint, wiring, interior, and much more!

Bill, that inside panel at the very bottom was open to the inside of the car...not sure if you saw that I suppose you can get at it from inside...then seam seal all the welds. Great channel and great job.

At the bottom left? I saw that and am still debating as to whether to plug it with a little piece of metal or seam sealer. There's a few things like that and little pinholes that remain and will need some attention. Thanks for the thumbs up!

Isn’t the back panel going to continue to rust with the patch over it? Great channel. Love the restoration.

It might, but I'm mainly trying to stop water from being able to wet the interior. Once I get all of the metal work done, I'm going to bomb all the hidden spaces with undercoating. Glad you like the channel!

Great repair on the cowl and firewall. I was anxiously waiting for a video and it was worth the wait. You should have a very dry interior and the undercoating adds another level of protection. Your welding and fabrication skills show your attention to detail.

The weld kept spitting and spattering, causing the bead to be more gorilla than it should have been. There must have been too much contamination around where I was welding. I actually thought it should have come out better, even though it's hidden. Thanks for the vote of confidence!

Great work on Christine. I always look forward to your videos. I don't know what I'm going to do once you finish the car. Any thoughts on what your next project might be?

Not a clue! I've had Christine on the "to-do" list for several years now and am finally able to turn my attention to her. If you've not yet seen it, Episode 1 is where I tell my story and the background of how we got here. As for the next project, well... there's ALWAYS a NEXT project!

My brothers nomad was rotted all along the drain trough....and that's when it was only 25 years old....theres not much of your car that doesn't need attention..but it looks like you've got her nailed...don't spare the pebble guard or undercoat...good job

I swear, I honestly (stupidly) thought this was going to be a quick repaint with only small spot repairs. It's 10 times the job I originally envisioned.

It's a good point you never see it. I have to rebuild the same area on my 55 and rebuild the other side of the A piller to the rocker.

It just needs to be functional and water-tight. I watched Fitzee do something similar on a C10 cab, but his was like factory!

Just a thought you could have redirected the water away from the hole in the rocker panel and the bottom of the fender. I also have a 1971 Cutlass convertible for 14 years now in the process of doing some upgrades

A few months ago I saw a picture on Instagram that had a 55 Chevy and a 71 Cutlass next to one another! I thought it was a strange coincidence!

My experience would say that if there is rust in the bottom of the outer cowl and in the lower hinge cover, there is more rust up above in the drain gutter and upper inner vowel area. Debris collects in the water diversion gutter and it plugs. Really need to remove all of the outer cowl to see what you have. Just fixing the lower area is probably not enough

Very sage words! Check out Episode 98. I had to fix exactly that!

Mine has some rust up higher also I'll need to fix. I got free time recovering from surgery to tinker the more I look the more I find.

@@RestoringChristine1956 I've learned something over the years. Your finally done fixing the rust when you don't have piles of rust to sweep up every time you work on the car.
