E39 M5 - Rear Main Seal Leak

Routine Maintenance like oil changes are a great time to inspect your car. Unfortunately that means you may find things you don't like. Today I found that my e39 M5 was leaking oil and appears to be from the Rear Main Seal. The car has 77,000 miles.

See the exhaust brackets at 1:53? the ones that make two half-circles with 13mm bolts just before the transmission crossmember? My M5's looked like they came off the Titanic. I recommend removing those, having them sandblasted and painted/powdercoated to preserve them. Or buying new ones. I had to do the latter.

Time to start doing some of the bigger jobs yourself! The parts for the rear main seal are cheap, so instead of paying somebody $1000 for labor, either rent a lift for the day or do it on jack stands and buy a Harbor Freight transmission jack for like $200 to make the job easier. That's pretty much how I became a BMW mechanic- I was always way too cheap (and broke) to pay somebody to fix my cars, so I learned how to do it all myself.

Honestly I just don't have the time. I do the basics on my cars but there's some jobs I just can't spare 2 days to do myself. I'll hand this one over while I do brakes and track prep on the m3 haha

Why did you use 5W30 over 10W60?

2 reasons. One it is the specified oil for 01-03 m5 since they changed the piston rings from the 2000 design. 2, the car has always been using it and changing oil has a knack for causing new issues (if it ain't broke don't fix it)

Why are yall so worried about the smallest leaks. The entire bottom half of my car is covered in grease, dirt, and oil. Its just a BMW thing

hello, why are you pouring 5w30 oil into s-62, at least 10w50, 10w60 standard, you will spoil the engine, I’ll only pour a standard in my m5 and for 8 years now they don’t rattle

what year is your M5? 2001-2003 specify 5w30. 2000 specify 10w60. Some use it in later cars as well if they want but not required. BMW changed the specification of the piston rings for the 01-03 S65 allowing them to use a thinner oil. Also if its temperatures you're worried about, the m5 runs incredibly cool (especially compared to my M3 which I use 10w60). Anyway def appreciate the input. 80k miles strong here!

The plan is replace the entire cooling system since its nearly 20 years old at this point

I need to do the rear main seal.... crap... how much does the real main seal job cost?

Turns out this was the replaced valve cover gasket not seated properly. We went in and replaced them again and used rtv to make sure they sealed

@@TedwardDrives Ah, nice! I did the valve covers, and double checked them with a snake camera, so I WISH this was my case. So you said about $1k for the rear main seal? who did the work?

Wile Motorsport did it wayyy back when he was part time working out of the garage of a house he rented haha. Best to plan to replace the clutch while the transmission is out as well. I don’t recall the cost but any shop would be able to quote that pretty accurately
