excellent tutorial. maybe slightly above average weekend mechanic here that only works on my 330i zhp myself if i feel confident i can complete the repair without too much issue. only have basic tools. followed this step by step and was finished in 2 hours. i did not remove the fan but still got it done. def could have used the space that removal wouldve provicded but it isnt necessary. had a big issue with the tank not coming straight out - it didnt want to come off the mount it sits on and the mount did not want to release. really took a bit more strength than i was comfortable applying, feeling like i was being a bit rough. tank came out but the mount stayed in. new tank pushed onto the seated mount without issue. thanks so much, subscribed.

3'rd time this tank bursts on me, all cases were during summer with the AC at the max. so clearly these are related. what i don't understand is why that cap does not release the pressure as it's supposed to do before the whole tank blows up (new cap every time)

Make sure to use OEM parts and bleed the system properly. I would probably test the coolant for a head gasket leak, which could cause the pressure to increase. I've never had a tank burst in 17 years of owning this car. Something isn't right.

BTW: if anyone has trouble with leaks at the base after fitting, just make sure the connectors are VERY clean of any old dirty material, and you do have to use quite a bit of force to fully seal and lock in those plugs, I was pushing down with about half my weight repeatedly until it fully sealed. These things are old, be patient.

I’m not sure if I followed up but should you drain the coolant from the radiator first before removing the expansion tank?

You don't have to, but more coolant will come out when you disconnect the reservoir if you don't.

I installed a new tank but it’s leaking from the bottom where it mounts and I fitted everything the way it was supposed to what could this be?

Those hoses are finicky. They have to be pushed in 100% completely or they will leak. Happened to me once too with a different hose but that's the first thing I'd check.

How did you get the bottom piece at 5:50 to come out with the expansion tank? Mine stayed on and now the new tank doesn't sit properly, leaks from that small connector that doesn't have a metal clip

Mine always come out that way. I've seen some e46 with a slightly different cooling system design but I'm only familiar with the design on my car. You'll have to take a close look and find a way to get that sealed. Sorry I can't help from here.

My 2006 X3 manual trans expansion tank would NOT come out easy. Forgot to remove the big clip on the bottom. I have no idea what i broke getting it out but it came out

Make sure the connection is clean. The silicone grease goes a long way.

It appears to be part of the "expansion tank retainer". Part Number 17111436250 (for manual transmission vehicles)

damn this is the wrong way to DIY.. even the way the hoses are connected.. very wrong!! you push the clips first and then connect the hose, you'll hear a click which means that the connection is secure.. obviously no idea what he's doing with a BMW..
