E46 M3 SMG To Manual Swap Pt1: Disassembly And Bellhousing Modification

In this video, Nick starts the SMG to manual swap on his E46 M3. After he and Wesley remove the transmission and SMG parts, they machine the bellhousing to accept the shifter detents and centering spring. Nick shows a unique way to install the shifter detents that simplifies the machining process, so a milling machine is not required to have a factory style shifter.

Great video. Would have liked to see more details about the SMG pump and line removal, but I feel like it is straight forward enough. I bought an SMG back in September that I was planning to convert using an RTD self centering shifter, but I found a swap kit from a part out guy with a 6MT, pedals, and lines for $1300. Hope your next video comes out soon, as I am itching to convert mine now. Thanks!

Thanks! Yes the SMG pump removal is straight forward you shouldn’t have any issues with that. The next video will be out next week.

What was the orientation of the detent pins? Does the slanted sides on the groove face inboard to eachother so they can contact that bearing? Or do the slants both face downward?

The slanted profile goes towards the bearing.

@@RacingRejects also, did you use any drift pins to install the bushings? My transmission is a stock 6spd and I’m replacing these pins as a precaution. Just dont want the bushing to go too deep into the trans

Why no gear position sensor tapping on the main transmission?

I bypassed the sensor with the wiring. This is the same way the Z4M is wired.

What method did you use to press/tap the bushings in for the 2 detent pins?

It’s been so long since I did it I honestly can’t remember exactly, but I most likely stuck them in the freezer for a minute to shrink them a bit and then used a socket that was slightly smaller than the bushing to tap them in place.

@@RacingRejects Alright thanks; I was thinking about buying one of those tool kits that are used to tap the detent bushings in on ZF 5sp transmissions on E36's and seeing if any of those fit for these, but I will try this if that doesn't work.
