E46 Post Cat Oxygen Sensor Replacement DIY

I have officially begun my engine rebuild project. During the exhaust removal I realized that I wanted to remove the post-cat o2 sensors so I decided to put that in a separate video so that people could it find more easily in the future when they search my video library.

Excellent video. (As usual.) One trick… don’t mess with the line and it constantly spinning back on you as you try to get it off. Cut them! :-) They are going into the trash anyway. Cut right above the sensor. Nice thing is that you can now slip a 22mm flexible head ratcheting wrench over the top.

That is true that’s probably what im going to do when i replace mine but hes not replacing his just removing them for whatever reason he needs to then hes reinstalling them

Great video, thanks for the assistance ! Bank 2, sensor 2 failed in mine but i did both sensor 2 for banks 1 & 2 whilst i was under there. Bank 1, sensor 2 was easy enough to get to but bank 2 sensor 2 wouldnt come out at all, torch heat, penatrating fluid, engine on exhaust heat…..nothing….i ended up smashing/snapping sensor 2 off bank 2s exhaust, and putting a 22mm socket over it with adaptors to remove. got there in the end. 125.000 miles and in the Uk, rust, salt and all sorts…

Thank you for taking the time to share this information. I recently had the ignition coils replaced and ever since I keep getting an error about bank 2 sensor 2 O2 sensor heater being bad. I suspect the mechanic may have accidentally messed with the connectors and I now need to locate them so I can check. Thanks to your video I now know the location of the harness and connectors.

it should be *bank 2, sensor 1, heater circuit,* that's what I'm getting on my OBD2 scanner. unless both downstream sensors are both heaters?! weird.

2000 328ci 184k oe sensors... god damn it lol just spent hours heating, soaking, loosening milimeter by mm. they came off with the threads lmao fml such a brilliant spot to put 02 sensors on... thanks ya guys!

A few tips that have worked for me with O2 sensor removal in the past...sometimes if you tighten the sensor a bit first it will break free easier to aid in removal, also running the engine to get the exhaust warm can help with removal of the O2 as well.

Here is a tip , get the car and exhaust hot then break them loose and come back after its cooled down for removal .

Just incase you guys end up buying a 17 year old 325ci like i did recently make sure you prepare yourself for a seized O2 sensor. We used heat to help un seize which usually works with various nuts and bolts. the wire/ wires were broken beyond repair. Anyway we ended up snapping the post cat sensor bank1. Had to weld blank plug in old hole. Drill new hole and used a 02 sensor weld in bung. Ended up relocating the sensor. If not for the luck of having a bung and welding gear the job would not of been done in 1 afternoon. Moral of the story, o2 sensors are week, especially when heated. Im glad i didn't have to take the engine out as i would not of liked that at all.

You should be able to reach bank 1 sensor 2 from the top you just need a long extensions and the 22mm open socket

hey man nice video again!. also since you're doing a rebuild, why not try going with cat less headers. since you have a preface lift you have the ecu MS43 which allows the tuning from cars in Europe and you can increase power with the headers and the tune as well as canceling out the post 02 sensors

how many O2 sensors in total - 2 in the exhaust, and two near the engine? Are ALL the same type?

Shoot. My 02 sensor bung weld semi rotted away and broke. I'm not putting anti seize in I'm putting thread lock in my new one and calling it a day

Drop a wire from the top, hook it to the sensor and pull it back up. Simple, even a shade tree mechanic knows that.

One of my post-cat sensors is throwing a (non-CEL) P-1155 - should I replace both? The voltage is not varying with engine revs; just starts around 0.8 V and then dies off after a few minutes. Car is 82k miles.

Can this be the reason why my car shakes. I turn on the car and it's good no shake. I give it gas slowly and it runs good. I try to step on it and on my screen a warning comes out saying I could damage the catalytic converter to not give to much gas?????????? Help

No. You need to look at your fuel trims and figure out if you've got a lean condition and what type of lean condition it is. Watch my fuel trims video.

hello jason. I have started to see 0430 error code on my 330ci which seems to indicate bank 2 sensor or cat is going out. There is an idle dip on deceleration but no other misfire and no other codes. Economy is ok as well. I suspect its the cat. Following is some data logged from bmw logger, free software for windows and mac which i use for this: Code,Error Frequency,Logistic Counter,RPM Of Occurrence,Description DME,DME Number:xx Current: 3800.2h Last Cleared: 3780.3h 234,3,40,2176,Catalytic Converter Overall Efficiency Bank 2 233,4,40,1984,Catalytic Converter Overall Efficiency Bank 1 90,0,0,0,Exhaust Temperature Pre Cat Conv - Bank 1 91,0,0,0,Exhaust Temperature Pre Cat Conv - Bank 2 93,0,0,0,Exhaust Temperature Post Cat Conv - Bank 2 133,0,0,0,CAN Signal ASC - Timeout The above all occurred after sustained highway driving for several hours and a short trip immediately after engine off. so not a true indicator; however the catalytic issue persists. I thought to try replacing the post cat sensors first before diving into a catalytic replacement. what are your thoughts?

Check your fuel trims to see if they are normal. It's possible to have a false P0430 but very unlikely. If your trims are normal, you simply need a new cat. If they are not, correct whatever condition is making them rich or lean and then see if the P0430 comes back.

thanks. on a similar theme, ngk also make oxygen sensors i think both post and pre cat. can you see any issue with using those assuming they would be oem manufactured as alternative to bosch and are not as expensive? the analysis showed temperature was incorrect. can you comment about whether that may mean the sensors are damaged or the exhaust is too rich/lean?

hello jason .here is some data from torque. I ran the car for about 30 miles, did not turn engine off in city and some highway driving. No codes. all seems to check out although id did not loo at the fuel trims specifically, looking for some app to do that and record the data. But from what i can see including emission readiness all went through at least 1 drive cycle and no obvious issues. also from what i can see there are no pending codes either. Like your videos!! Question i had a code P0188 and P0189 and I tough it might be upstream sensors and changed it but car won’t run. Before i turn car off in front of my house i was loosing power and rpm just droped couple of times on the highway so I checked I learned these codes. Is it possible that i need new downstream o2 sensors? Or maybe fuel pressure regulator or fuel filter? I mean what could cause my car cranking and not starting......

After replacing my spark plugs and tightening them to specified torque 30nm 3 came loose and seems to have took out O2 sensor bank 2 sensor 2 out with it because now I'm getting errors. Would loose plugs do that?

I watch the video on how to keep your check engine light off by putting defouler on your downstream O2 sensors now my car is still getting lean cuz I changed all my boots I checked my disa valve I pretty much checked through everything that a smoke test everything seems fine what does the defowler's give me a lean code

Good day friend. I would like to see if you can help me with the following problem. Buy an E46 2001 330i in 2019/09. Since I bought it, it shows me the following error code. 25 (P0030-P0031-P0032) 55 (P0050-P0051-P0052) 61 (P0056-P0057-P0058) 79 (P0036-P0037-P0038). Is it possible that the 4 oxygen sensors are damaged at the same time? Or what could be the problem? I would appreciate your help.

I really enjoy your videos. I have done some repairs thanks to them. I just replaced my spark plugs only to find a couple wet, burnt looking ones. They were also mixed brand, single strap deals. The piston top that I could see looked pretty gunked. Any suggestions on a cleaner? Thanks again for the work with your helpful videos.

Mmm... I'm not a huge fan of cleaning something that is very gunked like that. You risk a large piece of the debris flaking off and getting stuck on a valve seat or something. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Gonna change my sensors but I realized on my 04 330i the sensors with the cylinder connection is pre-cat and the square one is post cat on the exhaust. Is this correct for 04 or did the shop put the sensors on the wrong spots?

I’m having trouble disconnecting the electrical conections for my o2 sencers Im guessing they have never been replaced over 20000 miles and the heat has caused the plastic to fuse together. Have you had to deal with this? Do you have a solution?

You removing the O2 sensor does not mean is a defective one only showing to all lolololo mechanics and all of them going to replace 2 sensors. What was the reason to replace this sensor?

I know replacing downstreams isn't as important because it just reads emissions, but what is the worst that could happen if they fail? You just get a 'check engine' light? Anything more serious possible?

Hey man , ok so my 2002 e46 is man I wanna give up but I'm 18 n me n my dad work on it but was wondering bc you know so much abt e46s if u lived in same state as me would it be as possible for u to come n just help ? Mean so much but if not same state I need a lot of help bc it's leaking anti freeze and I change radiator , fan clutch , water pump , fan bc it was over heating and now it has a couple new parts but everytime I fix it I can't drive it more then a day without something wrong

the leak is probably coming from some hose that lines the engine directly under the intake manifold. Remove the intake manifold assembly and inspect those hoses and temp sensor while you're at it.

How can I get rid of these code's on my e46, they are p0174 and p1085. Also what are the part numbers for the o2 sensors need to replace them. Could the o2 sensor's play part in the code that I have got?.

Yes. If you have only bank 2 codes like that, it *could* be a bad o2 sensor. If you also have P0171, the problem is likely a vacuum leak. I would encourage you to watch my "Common Vacuum Leaks" video as well as my "How to Diagnose Engine Problems Using Fuel Trims" video for further help/learning on this subject.

I hooked my scanner up to my car to read my 02 sensor voltages. Three read .925 (-/+ .02) and one alone reads .865, in ur opinion is that .865 a bad sensor or maybe just a dirty sensor?

For the rear O2s that is ok, you're looking for them to remain slightly rich while the engine is warmed up.

50sKid dude you I would have never guessed what my problem was. There a little fuse box inside that box under the hood by the brake booster. I call it the brains and there was a fuse in there I seen in another video relating to the throttle body that I just wanted to check for shits and giggles. Checked them out and they all light with the tester but on one, one side was dim. Took me about 15 minutes to get the fuse box out and about 20 minutes to open it. If you know about this already I'm wasting my time lol but if you don't you'll find out. Checked the one that was dim, sure enough it was fried. Changed it and started racing hondas! Search for a spark plug socket set on Amazon. There are lots of different ones

MAN I'm trying to figure out my p0137 Bank 1 sensor 2 and p0157 bank 2 sensor 2 both popping up after header replacement. Before it was just Catalyst system efficiency below threshold bank 1 and 2. The bank 2 catalytic converter was disintegrated cause you could hear the catalyst when shaking it. Possible my o2 sensors were destroyed both downstream because of this? oh. I know this video is old and I'm possibly not going to get a response but worth a try :P

Well if you installed headers then you no longer have downstream o2s (sensor 2) right? So now you’ll always have codes.

@@50sKid I installed headers and catalytic converters. But of course they aren’t OEM so yeah.. the O2s probably do not like the catalyst 😂 it’s saying o2 circuit low no activity. Guess I destroyed them somehow. Was a tough job getting the old ones off.

@@rufiorufioo Nah it's not that they "don't like" the catalyst, it's that the electrical circuit is no longer working. Meaning you damaged the wiring somehow during the replacement. You should inspect and find the problem and either fix the wiring or just replace the sensors if that is easier.

@@50sKid alright. Well yesterday driving home from work the check engine light turned off.. and it’s staying off.. man I enjoy the BMW but they are temperamental things.😆 like you said preventative maintenance is key.

🤔Next time just cut the O2 sensor wire off. That's what I do ...theyr no good anyways.😉

my car has more oxides from exaust when idle. but when it runs rpm, its normal. do i need to replace this? or its just the exaust sensor?

i dont remember. i bribed the guy so i get 2 year visa on my car on that service. he said when car is idle, the o2 is way way up. and when he accelerates, it said its normal. so im guessing its the 2 upper sensors?

That's not enough (or even the proper) information to determine what is wrong. Need to look at fuel trims and o2 sensor output to see what's going on.

I was there. It was just going up way out of normal. So far I changed the camshaft sensor, spark plugs and induction coils. So that leaves the o2 sensors and exaust sensor. The car is running rough when idle. Ty!

E46 rear O2 sensors are Bosch 15109.

Pls help. My Secondary air pump is not ready under MIL, so I can’t smog it. I recorded a video of my o2 sensors and st and lt fuel trims as my sensors might be defective.
