HP Umpire Will Little ejected Cardinals 3B Nolan Arenado and manager Oliver Marmol for arguing strike calls (one correctly and one incorrectly officiated) in the 3rd inning vs Cincinnati. It looked bad from a game management perspective. Report: www.closecallsports.com/2023/...

Made the same call on Contreras in one of the earlier innings. What a horrible ejection, Arenado is walking away and Marmol got tossed almost instantly.
@patcon314
@patcon314 Год назад
The umpire caused both ejections. Arenado said something that didn't get him ejected, then Little engages him causing a reply. That reply from Arenado, CAUSED BY LITTLE, was what got Arenado tossed. Then Marmol comes out to defend his player, which leads to his ejection. Nothing happens if Little doesn't start the confrontation.

Between innings, umpires should be checking the video for borderline calls so they can get relevant feedback. If hockey players can check their shift immediately on an iPad on the bench, there is no reason baseball umpires cannot do the same. Lindsay makes a really good point. I agree that you should never approach the person you are warning because this is what causes people to claim that the umpire "baited" the player into the ejection. I know that wasn't his intention, it just doesn't look good. I think it would have looked better if he took his position behind home plate, and then warn/eject the player if necessary. I don't have an issue with ejecting the player for continued arguing (which was clearly the case here), it's just how it's done matters. This is still a good teachable moment, as future umpires can learn from this. This reminds me of an ejection last year when Lindsay said when a player is at a 10 on the emotional scale, that umpires need to be at a 5 (I think it was a Torey Lovullo). I understand it's not easy. In fact, there is no doubt in my mind that there are things said in these arguments that can't be repeated on television. I think the best thing to do in this situation is take a deep breath and remind yourself as the umpire, you have the final word.

It seemed to me that even if Arenado was commenting on the strike zone, he was talking to the coach/player walking right next to him, when Little approaches him, engages him, and ejects him. I guess I would just question how much is "allowed", such as saying "I disagree" with the call, versus how much you can talk to your teammates. If you're not talking "loudly", but are talking to teammates about the strike zone, such as saying he's calling it low today, is that enough for the Ump to eject him for "whining" about the strike zone? Like you and the commentators said, it seems like Little initiated everything, and at most, Arenado acknowledged Little talking to him, but basically "brushed him off" to keep talking to his teammate.

You're exactly right! I agree with you. But...the big cat and mouse show is actions and hand gestures, not words. As long as you don't show the umpire up, it's just baseball? I understand his frustration but he did show to be the aggressor, walking towards the players, as they showed to be going completely away from him. We can't have that as an example that so many people and kids look up too, and want to umpire like? As hard as it is, you have to let words go, unless it's up close and personal? He's better than that, and I'm sure he'll be harder on himself, and work at that to prevent and handle those type things from escalating, again.
@1969EType
@1969EType Год назад
Seriously...I don't care about the optics. The umpire never left the dirt circle. And further, an umpire can walk around the field however they choose. At this level, players and coaches should be professional enough to realize, "Oh...there's an umpire there...maybe I shouldn't say or do anything ejectionable..." Maybe if Little doesn't close space on Arenado, then Little doesn't hear what Arenado says so, he isn't ejected...I guess? Arenado wasn't ejected for no reason. He absolutely said something to Little about the strike zone, by rule that is ejectionable and he was ejected. We should not be looking for players and coaches to be given the benefit of the doubt or a break. Don't want to get ejected? Stop arguing umpire judgement.
@CommonSense823
@CommonSense823 Год назад
@@1969EType Why are you so quick to give the umpire the benefit of the doubt here. Watch the interaction again. Little walked towards him and never shut up long enough to hear what Nolan said. He was chirping at the player the entire time, until he got the response he was looking for to eject him. No excuse for that from an umpire. It you're going to eject him for something he said, do it. If you're going to argue with him until he says something ejection worthy, that's on the umpire. Little could have deescalated things, he chose to go with escalation.
@1969EType
@1969EType Год назад
@@CommonSense823 The reason I am "so quick" to give the umpire the benefit of the doubt? I have been watching players, coaches, fans and parents for over 40 years now just absolutely abuse umpires. There's the First Amendment but, things have gone beyond civility and decency long ago. They get ejected...and they just keep right on going. Saying whatever they please to the umpires, right? Gotta' get their money's worth, right? And for what? Disagreeing with judgement. Can you imagine if a manager made a pitching change (coach's judgement) and the incoming pitcher gave up the game winning HR and the umpire went into the dugout (his office...) and said, "Coach, that's terrible. I mean...that's eff-ing terrible right there. You just cost your team the game, Coach! You have GOT to be better there...that's unacceptable!" Can you imagine that happening? That umpire would never work in professional ball again. But hey...players and coaches can say WHATEVER they want to the umpires, right? When they get ejected, it's just the umpires making it about them, right? Please...
@CommonSense823
@CommonSense823 Год назад
@@1969EType your first mistake is comparing the competitors on the field to umpires. Players and managers are competing in a game. They will fail by design. Umpires are to be impartial observers and they are supposed to call games fairly and correctly per the rule book. They fail at this often in the MLB. Their failure comes with no consequences for the umpire. They can jaw at managers, jaw at players, miss calls that affect the game, and the worst that could possibly happen to them is they miss a playoff assignment. They can literally call a dog shit game. See Angel Hernandez behind the plate in the Phillies/Brewers game last year. He was missing calls by over 6”. What was his punishment? There was none. He was completely protected by the union and the egregious zone used to score umpires, negotiated by said union. The league announced he scored 96% on his ZE score. If the umpires refuse to hold themselves accountable and are allowed to affect game outcomes, coaches and players will understandably lose their shit as they are held accountable for the results of the game. But umpires don’t want to be accountable. They want control. Many (certainly not all) look for situations to make the game about themselves. They look for reasons to eject a player and/or manager (see this video). They need to be removed from the game and replaced by the many more capable umpires waiting for a shot, rotting in the minors. Everyone knows this. The managers know it. The players know it. MLB knows it. Until that happens, respect for umpires is earned, not a given.

This was absolutely shameful behavior by an umpire. First the second pitch to Arenado was way up, especially after a head hunting pitch. It was clearly out of the zone, and the high pitch is the easiest one to call for an ump. Then the inside pitch. That one was close... however, as an ump, they threw at the batters head, you called a high pitch, you cant give them the inside corner too, but you did. Ok, GIDP... at that point, STFU and wipe the plate off. Why are you going after a player? You know he didn't like the calls, you know he didn't enjoy grounding into a DP. Leave him alone unless he comes over to you and gets in your face. HORRIBLE, and he should be punished for his behavior.

I do not know if you are employed or not (which is why I commented on the screen name) but I will assume at some point if not currently you work / have worked. At any of those jobs would you ever let someone, especially a subordinate (as umps are the bosses of the game) swear at you, bad mouth you to your face, scream, purposely embarrass you? If so I do not know what else to say. But, these guys do not have thin skin. They allow this every player, every at bat. It has to get overboard and then something is done. Also, I AM NOT saying that sometimes umps do not get a little touchy and maybe eject a little quickly. Absolutely happens. BUT WE as the viewer have NO IDEA what usually leads up to these - a cumulative effect. My question to you - why do you hold umps to a different standard of how "thick" their skin should be in comparison to EVERY OTHER JOB that exists? QUICK LAST NOTE: as an ump of over 30 years thru college level, I DO agree that an ump should never walk to a player as they are walking away. You can still eject them if what they are saying is worthy of ejection and is audible from where you are standing at the time! However, do not follow them as it give the optic of trying to hear what they are saying purposely!

The homeschool parenting moniker was for during the Covid lockdown when I was trying to help parents with their newfound responsibility of teaching their children at home. I am retired now after 45 years in public education as a school, counselor/school psychologist, and I started umpiring when I was 15 years old and officiated various sports through the early 2000s the main reason I left officiating was due to officials who had never played any sports or at best had played during Little League. My point is many of these altercations are initiated by umpires, and then escalated, and then when they are all of a sudden offended, they resort to the tactic of ejection. I can tell you it is a whole lot easier to call a pitch than hit a pitch. As far as the language issue swearing is used during normal conversations much less during altercations and then all of a sudden they’re offended? I believe in allowing individuals to experience the consequences of their behavior if a manager or player crosses the line, run them however, don’t resort to the tactic of injections simply because you can also, do you have any idea how I can change my moniker.

That first strike call on Arenado was high and shouldn’t have been called a strike. You can argue whether he “should” have been ejected, but as a player, you can’t put yourself in a position where the umpire has a chance to even THINK about ejecting you from the game. Whether you agree with the strike call or not, you’ve got to put it behind you. A simple “I disagree with that call” would have been fine, but don’t complicate matters by arguing the call further after the inning was over. People will say that umpire shouldn’t eject “star players”, but I also don’t believe they should get “special privileges” over other players when it comes to arguing the strike zone. When you put yourself and your team at the “mercy” of the home plate umpire and force him to “decide” whether or not to throw you out of the game, then you’ve “gone too far”.

On a side note at about 1:28 I heard the announcer "Non eye contact?". When I paused the video it looks like Arenado is looking directly at Little. Just because Arenado's body isn't turned completely towards Little, doesn't mean he wasn't looking at him. In my opinion, the announcer is upset that it was one of the star players who got ejected. Actions have consequences. They shouldn't try and justify unsportsmanlike conduct. When my father played in little league, one of the first things his manager told him is "Do not argue with the umpire. Let me do it. You focus on playing baseball." One thing I will mention is (unless things get personal), umpires usually will take more from a manager than they will from anyone else. I think a part of that is that the manager is supposed to be the "voice" of the team. Most importantly, you cannot argue balls and strikes. I get that the 1-0 pitch was incorrect. That will be reflected in his overall accuracy for the game. That being said, arguing balls and strikes after being warned to stop is pretty much an automatic ejection. To be fair, this does show up as QOCN on Close Call Sports' website.

To be fair, umpires have been pretty trash this year. You can't give him a strike that high and one that low (the low one was a strike by the book). Look at the strike zone graphic on Arenado! lol when he is set in the box ready for the pitch, the box is literally belt high. As he strides it then gets to where is should be! Why does MLB allow these graphics to be put on their product? Ive made this comment before many times! It does nothing but make the game and umps look bad. It also feeds into commentators' seeing what they think is a bad call and then bashing the ump! Why this has not been addressed is an all time MLB blunder and that is saying something!

Arenado ejection was weak. There was no reason to eject unless it was an insult. Even if he said something personal get him to look at you before you give the motion. He was clearly looking other way when he was ejected and umpire was walking toward him. Even though it’s not classic verbal baiting, it is physical baiting which is just as bad, especially in modern era of cameras all over. Also, Marmol ejection was a quick-hook. If he is going out to defend his player you got to have a longer leash and if it’s to argue strike zone, warn him first and tell him to go back to the bench, if he doesn’t then you can eject. There is no reason to rush these arguments, they’re rare occurrences and it’s good for the ratings. Game is already being rushed enough with all these clocks. Besides it’s between innings so it won’t hurt to jaw back and forth a little, Little.

Miss on this one. I agree the walking, although laid back, could be a bad optic. It could also be he was trying to de escalate. He was not chasing after him. AND you don’t know what he said although you think you do by opining the ejection was without merit. One last point: umpires are NOT responsible for players’ behavior. Arenado didn’t like a strike call. Fine. He continued to harp on it passing home plate. Even if Little casually walks towards him Little is supposed to ignore a guy maybe calling him a mf’er from 15 feet away?! Get real.
@CommonSense823
@CommonSense823 Год назад
Don’t believe your lyin’ eyes, right? There’s a lot of “maybe” and “could be” in your defense of the umpire here. Not much calling for the umpire to be responsible for his own behavior. 🤔 Umpire not only followed him, but was chirping back at him, escalating the situation until the player finally said something to get ejected. Classic baiting by the umpire.

@@CommonSense823 “Umpire baiting”, like a player isn’t responsible for his own behavior. Do you know what either of them said? I don’t. What I know is there was an argument over pitches initiated by the player. There’s a reason the rule book states players, coaches, et al cannot argue balls and strikes and there are consequences to doing so.

I disagree wholeheartedly. Umpires OUGHT to walk toward those indulging in childish exposition. It serves to build the status of the position - which as you channel shows daily - has taken huge damage recently. We need to engender some respect for the position of umpire. As it sits now, every player and manager on the field believes their opinion matters - which we all know it doesn't. Bad for the game - makes those folks look like children. Disagreeing with the umpire is pointless. How often has an argument resulted in a changed call? Almost never. The disagreement - especially when done vehemently (histrionic) diminishes both the status of the umpire - and more to the point the game itself. Arguing with umpires ought not be tolerated. An umpire moving toward the fray rather than away only says, "I'm the authority and my decision defines your reality." If players and managers can learn to accept that, they'll have much easier lives.
@CommonSense823

This attitude is exactly the reason people disrespect umpires. Having to swing your dick around to show “you are the authority” is why you deserve no respect and deserve no place on a baseball field. Your ego is your own worst enemy.
