OMG! Just installed the double wishbone suspension on my Blackfoot and it is amazing! Just bashing around around the back yard it truly transforms the truck. No more donkey kicks on big bumps, the truck just takes flight. I have three ORV's and was just going to convert one, but now I'm considering the lot!
@AMPROEngineering
@AMPROEngineering 7 лет назад
Glad you like ti Joe. It is not a cheap purchase and it was really important to me that the geometry was all tight. I was actually thinking about only converting this truck and my Frog but I am also considering my Monster beetle and brat.
@joefugate2215

I did think about the cost vs. going out and buying a new modern truck, but even if I did I would of upgraded it too.

Oh I hear that. I just really don't like the modern trucks. They seem a little soulless to me.
@joefugate2215

My truck started life as a Frog. I raced it back in the mid/late 80s in what our local track called unlimited truck class. There were mostly BF, MB ,Midnight Pumpkins and even Kyosho Big Brutes.
@joefugate2215

I have gotten no help from my local hobby store getting the truck back together. I found your RU-vid channel searching for parts. I have to say I really appreciate your videos and have been extremely happy with my prchase of every single one of your products.

Cool jumps! The wall side touching jump is a great shot! And for you Alberto, fixing and improvement of the damaged part is not a big deal!
@AMPROEngineering
@AMPROEngineering 7 лет назад
Yes I loved that shot too! My friend is to thank for all those great videos. When I am there alone, I only have the SoloShot but that can't do those neat closups! Well I think I can replace that part with a nylon but the thickness in places is really pushing the limits of the SLS Nylon. We must visit each other one day so you can do one of your amazing videos with my car! ;)
@SANDSCORCHER

Another splendid vid Mr Ampro. Thanks as always for sharing your RC experiences. It must take up a lot of your precious time filming, editing and posting videos, as often as you manage to do so. I think re the component failure, she'd have failed a lot sooner and more dramatically without your developments and improvements. When I think of the frequency of component failures I suffered back in the day, on stronger cars than the Blackfoot and even in recent years on big ticket cars, it frankly beggars belief. You've done well to develop such a reliable platform for regular use and abuse. Please do keep up the good work for as long as you are willing and able. All of your efforts are greatly appreciated by many people.
@AMPROEngineering
@AMPROEngineering 7 лет назад
I must agree that parts fail much less often for me. I don't know if my suspension upgrade helped it last longer but it is nice to think so. That part was quite bad when I installed it so i think the blame still is mine. I am glad you like the videos and the application is what gets me to spend my lunches and time i should be sleeping, making and editing these videos.

Nice footage! Love that body and the brace! Might have to get it for my Monster Beetle some day if I wanna go jump on tarmac. Never jumped and landed on tarmac like you did without something braking so don't blame 30 year old Tamiya plastic ;-) It was nice to see though that all Ampro parts held up! Thumbs up for your parts and the nice slo-mo jumps!
@AMPROEngineering
@AMPROEngineering 7 лет назад
That nylon is good stuff. Let it be known that I rarely do this to my cars. It was done for testing purposes. I really never like abuse like this but Project Mudblaster is a test mule. I was cringing when I did this to my KingCab but it too did well. This truck was all but perfect here and I may send it right back very soon!

@DeadnCold
@DeadnCold 7 лет назад
Perhaps consider printing the new motor plate in metal like you did for the rear shock mount braces? Or just fab one out of a bit of aluminum plate. I'd be worried the nylon wouldn't hold up to the heat and constant rotational hits when you start, stop and reverse. I could see it ovaling the screw holes quickly.
@AMPROEngineering
@AMPROEngineering 7 лет назад
I totally agree with you on the metal front. Here is my issue: the printed metal has an irregular shrink rate and I have worked hard on trying to determine that. I think that would be amazing as it would transfer the motors heat load to the trans plates. I think the nylon would handle the heat better than the ABS but its like you say about fwd & rev, I don't know about those loads. You would need to torque is down well to prevent the ovaling you describe. I may need to suck it up and test out both versions.

Do you know if they make anything today to widen the wheelbase on the tamiya trucks? My Monster Beetle can flip easily if you turn sharp. I just thought if there was a way to just bring he wheels out a bit, it could remedy this situation. Your thoughts?
@AMPROEngineering
@AMPROEngineering 5 лет назад
Well, wider tires or spacers would help but the main reason your car rolls is how the rear suspension works. It was designed for a buggy and when paired with big wheels, they load exerted on them causes the the suspension to compress in a non-linear and unpredictable fashion causing the roll over. That is why I made a rear double wishbone system for this truck. That problem is gone. You can see it in a video at the race track with good tires.
@classicvwbugs

I never realised a skate park would be such a great place for an RC car. I think it is!
@AMPROEngineering
@AMPROEngineering 7 лет назад
It is for the correct RC car. For something designed with fun in mind like a Hornet or an ORV, it is great. For something faster it will be a catastrophe. These places are all concrete and will destroy RC cars easily.

When you come awful the jump you're supposed to get off the throttle and it will not show up the dog bones or your gears in the gearbox
@AMPROEngineering
@AMPROEngineering 4 года назад
I was off the throttle a bit but with the centrifugal force on the big tires, slowing too much noses the truck down.
@modelnutty6503

oh noez.. (you didn't do it Tamiya did!) they created the frog that was a mechanical nightmare and not such a great performer either, wasn't moving. "oh hey lets put jumbo wheels on it and call it the Blackfoot and Monster Beetle!" causing super gearbox problems, of course. the front end with its aluminum hangers and 4 plastic upper lower arms "stabilized" with the steel rods, what can I say? I hope that guy was fired. the actual space frame red chassis, I LIKE, kind of a shame they didn't make brackets for making use of a FOX gearbox and rear suspension arms/shocks (the whole pod!) and something similar up front. the shared shock on the FOX front end makes it kinda floppy side to side but transfers weight to the rear outer wheel for getting around really good. I'll kinda blame/credit FOX/Falcon for giving birth to the RC10, later the stadium truck blitzer beetle RC10T and the Losi versions... or long story short I'm just not a fan of the Frog or all it's ill conceived babies. the transmission issue could have been near solved with making the side plates from sheet twice as thick, and something entirely different created for its front suspension. serious, maybe 3D printing to put FOX front rear stuff onto a Frog frame would be an awesome kit and "new RC car"? might turn peoples heads who know the old Tamiya stuff.

Sounds like the beginning of project franken Fox...foot?
@AMPROEngineering
@AMPROEngineering 7 лет назад
Hahaha! Yeah you nailed it on the head. This was never supposed to have big tires! The guy who did that was not fired. He went on to design the KingCab diff, the TA series steering system and the strikers front end. ;) I thought about installing another cars rear suspension onto the truck but there was a ton of compromise. My custom design fits the truck with no compromises (well, fundamentally the truck as a whole started life as a compromise...) having to buy different parts from this kit and that kit and it went down a nasty and expensive road. Plus you know me, I hate cutting up cars...this truck even with the new rear end installed can be converted back to stock without any worry. Plus, that MIP diff has solved the trans problem for ever.
@AMPROEngineering
@AMPROEngineering 7 лет назад
Don't even get me started Hahaha!
@modelnutty6503
@modelnutty6503 7 лет назад
yup, agree about not doing much of any real butchering, did it to a hornet's upper battery tray to put in 2x3 cell saddle pack to move the CG back some, actually helped it a lot. that MIP diff is a definite must do for those transmission cases, we JB welded BIG fender washers to the side plates to keep them from blowing out, butcher trimmed spare side plates to do the same thing doubling up. that front end tho, sheesh!

That was great! fun spot .... you never see motor fall out that was weird ...I bet somebody used blue thread lock on the plate bolts or motor screws and it seeped out onto the plastic because if it does that tamiya plastic then cracks apart from it sitting on it it destroys it.
@AMPROEngineering

Yeah I was pretty confused about that...You know, you may be right. There is weird stuff all over that plate but it did show stress cracks all over when it was installed in the first place.

Looks like it is pretty well balanced, landing smoothly most of the time. Edit: I ordered most of your stuff for the ORV including the body mount braces, I was wondering if the cross bar for the body mount is included or did you not release that part yet? My order has not arrived yet but I'm looking forward to building my Blackfoot. The MIP diff is also still at the German customs office, hurry up postman!
@AMPROEngineering
@AMPROEngineering 7 лет назад
I was surprised at how easy it was to control in the air too. It was a joy to run. The cross bar is rather new and that running was part of the final testing. I was going to make it available shortly. The Diff is masterful btw. It changed the truck for me!
@Bulletmachine
@Bulletmachine 7 лет назад
Thanks for the clarification, I also got the rod bag of the re-release Subaru Brat to use the 48mm shaft "MR7" directly under the cross bar to give the chassis additional rigidity. I've seen that the re-release Blackfoot does not come with the MSC mounting plate and instead has 2 metal shafts connecting the chassis in the middle. Since I will be using your central servo mount and the new steering knuckles I can't glue the ESC onto the Servo like the manual suggests. Can I mount the ESC on the flat area behind the spot where the original msc mounting plate would be?
@AMPROEngineering

Nice video! Yeah a skateboard park is a cool place for RC cars but yes, as you said you have to watch out for people at the park! I like to bring my Lunchbox to those. In you experience, how tough are the gears in this type differential? I have a few Frog style chassis and on the Monster Beetle I have the counter gear chipped teeth and the car could be used. Maybe just brittle old plastic? When I saw the title I thought I was going to see a Tamiya Mudblaster with a Subaru body!
@AMPROEngineering
@AMPROEngineering 6 лет назад
A Lunchie is a great car for a skate park! The gears in these cars are tough but without a slipper they are easily destroyed with a hot motor in a hard landing. The counter gear isn't bad but the diff is the trash heap. Burn the one in your car and get the MIP ball diff. All of mine have it and that set up completely changed the ORV's for me. Oh and this is a Mudblaster but I have a Ranger P.C. shell I run on it to prevent damage to the MB body.
@thestuffz
@thestuffz 6 лет назад
seeing as you have both trucks... what do you think the chance of making a stock blackfoot body fit on a king blackfoot chassis? Also, a 3d printed king blackfoot grille would probably sell good. fyi
@AMPROEngineering
@AMPROEngineering 6 лет назад
Hmmmm, that is a good question. I think it should be easy but probably need a body lift or different shock tower. I used to run a SBF shell on my KBF. How the heck did i do that....I may need to look at that. When you say grille, like just the insert or the whole thing?

Ahh that's a relief, could have been much worse! I have an original Boomerang and every time I take it out something seems to break even just running it up and down the street. I thought it was part of a tree? Ill look but I think I am pretty set on printing a stainless one. I plan on throwing a 17 turn brushed motor and I think that would help dissipate the heat a bit. I looked at my two other big wheel orv's and they are all cracked. They are of course rather old so that doesn't help! Haha!

Love it. Great vid. That brace on the body is a great idea for pickup bodies. My Tamiya Toyota Land Cruiser body cracked in the same place that you showed. A brace like that would have saved it (probably). I do a similar thing to you with the body post holes but use some spare lexan (or PET from packaging) stuck on under the body with car number plate (licence plate) double sided tape. It also stops the body rattling around on the posts.
@AMPROEngineering
@AMPROEngineering 7 лет назад
I think it was actually PET in hindsight. The lic. plate is a great idea too! I am planning on some kind of BF front brace as that single post is still an awful idea.
@PeteWylieRC
@PeteWylieRC 7 лет назад
That licence plate tape is ever so useful. I get through rolls of it. On a slightly different subject I wanted to ask if you were able to produce something for the Lunchbox. I've got aluminium body posts and they never break, but what ends up happening is that the little rectangle of chassis that they attach to breaks off. I'm thinking that there could be a bracket above and below the post that spreads the load to a bigger area of the chassis. It could either be held together with a single longer screw and nut where the existing screw is, or have screws and nuts either side with a couple of holes through the chassis. Hard to explain but hopefully you know what I'm getting at. What do you reckon ?
@AMPROEngineering
@AMPROEngineering 7 лет назад
No I totally get it. That is a fantastic idea! I have some light cracking on my old MP chassis that is now on my LB but I did not think twice about that are. I think I will do this!
@PeteWylieRC
@PeteWylieRC 7 лет назад
Be great if you could make something. Does seem to be a weak spot on the chassis once you've upgraded the posts. I'm sure that there must be more people who could use this fix on their LB's and MP's :-)
