This Eagle bus has been off the road for 10 years. We traveled nearly 800 miles to North Carolina, got the bus road ready and then returned it back to its new home in Florida in 75 hours. What a whirl wind trip. A few issues arose but we completed the mission.

I have one of these. 1983 with a 6v92ta Detroit Diesel, tall window concept coach. I'm so happy I didn't know anything about this bus when I bought it because I would have been scared away. Now I love it and when I can afford for you to make it to Chicago I look forward to paying you to teach me everything your videos haven't already.

I was wondering why the RU-vid algorithm recommend you, but now I understand. This video was like a roadkill bus edition. A road trip with good friends, and knowledgeble mechanics is always worth watching.

Even better than roadkill!
@JonBecker81

Roadkill fan here, Scott needs a Finnegan sidekick to help him make really bad decisions. “It’ll buff out”. Scott worries too much about unimportant things like having good tires or making sure gauges work. Do they hold air for an extended period of time? Then they’re good. The water temp gauge doesn’t work? Just keep an eye out for steam pouring out of the radiator.

When I drove for Panhandle Trailways, Amarillo, Texas, I got to drive one of the last, surviving Golden Eagles, many times, on charters. That particular bus, has now been donated to a bus museum. That was definitely a real experience.

You could tell the more he got use to it the better he shifted ! You and I don’t need a tack or speedo to shift by but we both have been driving for many years and it comes with practice , I myself always went by sound and use the speedo to not get tickets ! Lol. It’s surely a nice blank canvas to create a super nice RV !

You're obviosly a first class mechanic but I'm amazed at how well you handle the bumps in the road. I never heard you get stressed when something went wrong and you found solutions based on what the part is supposed to do not on having the exact part. I aspire to be as cool a cookie as you.

Yes, if you can't "roll with the punches" and come up with on the spot solutions or at least work-arounds, you're in the wrong trade. It helps to be relatively young and agile, too! At 778 I now go with factory made motor homes...not that I don't personalize the sorry electrical systems however!

It’s a shame that these majestic beasts are so poorly maintained. Glad you’re bringing them back to life.

WELL, it isn't like you can just go down to an Autozone and ask for an Eagle part. These ARE commercial diesels that require outrageosly priced parts. AND truth be known, 95 per cent of the people that get these things 1)Were going through their 2nd or 3rd childhood 2)Didn't need even a regular RV much less one of these 15 ton plus beasts 3)Can't OR shouldn't even be driving them (I believe you should have a current CDL to even OWN one of these) 4)Don't have room to store one 5)Eventually will grow up and let guys like these have them for a song just to get them OFF the property. DO I love driving them?. SURE. BUT I got the CDL and I do it for PAY! These are commercial vehicles for commercial PURPOSES!
@BusGreaseMonkey
@BusGreaseMonkey 5 лет назад
We bought all the parts at autozone and advanced auto to fix the fuel issues. A lot of Napa stores carry brake parts. Engine parts are available online or in costal city’s. A few things like windshields and stuff are hard but nothing is impossible to find. Rv’s don’t require cdl and these all are titled as rv. A lot of shops won’t touch them mostly because they don’t know them. Or they are to busy to screw with an antique. Unless you are super wealthy owners need to learn how to do the maintenance. And that’s my niche. Helping owners learn how to work on them and removing the stigmatized fear of the great big unknown. Many are car guys so they know the basics but the bigger bus intimidates them
@jamespn
@jamespn 5 лет назад
Bus Grease Monkey great feedback. I think an RV conversion if done right can be a fun build and cost a lot less than a high six figure push RV unless you’re a traveling performer with deep pockets.
@mcbain3949

Ive got a majestic beast James I agree with you but the reason for the poor maintenance is the price of the parts , these days everything is an arm and a leg , and unless you happen to have bus grease monkey as your best friend its not for the faint hearted .

Aesthetically speaking, I've always loved the look of Eagle over all other makes of busses. I toured the Eagle bus plant in Brownsville TX. It was so sad to see them shut down.

Robert G, I've always preferred the look of the 05s over thw model 10s. Back in the early eighties I drove for a charter and tour company located in central MA. The company bought it's 3rd and 4th Eagles and I got lucky enough fly down to Brownsville with my supervisor to bring them home. I was not impressed with the factory. After leaving we stopped somewhere near the La. stater line for a break, and I suggested a walkaround inspection before hitting the highway again. It's a good thing . We found cracks in 4 out of the 5 or 6 bolt holes on the front right axle cap. The coach had gear oil all over that side of the bus. Luckily, I was able to save the bearing with some motor medic, but that was a bitch to get off the side of the bus once I got back home. The company started buying MCI s after that.

When I've looked at this video many a time, I chuckle to myself as a former truck owner with my friend. I learned to drive in an I-H c.o.e. w/ an 8V-71 and a Spicer 10 speed. Many truckers used to wonder why the Trailways Eagles just blew by them like they were stand -ing still.Many thought there were bigger engines in them.No just lighter pushing, instead of pulling!!! HaHa! Good job guys!

Awesome! As a former motor coach driver I have to say thanks for this! Around the corner from my house are 2 coaches, an Eagle and a MCI 9. Both been in the same spot for over 10 years. Not sure what is going on but I winch a little every time I see them. As for shifting, I learned that a tach and speedo are guides. You listen and feel and the more you drive it, the better you get at it (Dad drove a big rig for decades).

When I was a kid, in the 1970s, I was in diesel technology school as part of my junior and senior year of high school. We toured the repair depot for Continental Trailways located on I35 in Dallas, TX. They ran Eagles at the time. I remember seeing two, rebuilt 8V71s on the dyno running full tilt. It is said that they ran all their engines up to temperature and then held them steady for several hours. If they were going to blow they would do it on the stand and not on the road.

I fret over going on trips also because I had a breakdown once and got royally screwed because I had out of state tags. Got back home and the replaced fuel pump failed. Could only hope that karma would prevail. Lesson learned, pay attention to, and address the signals that alert you to potential problems with your vehicle.

Years ago I was hired to drive over the road and they gave me a truck that had been used as a yard jockey. I made it just over 140 miles and it started starving for fuel. Changed the filters 5 times over 70 miles. Finally pulled into a truck stop and pulled the fuel tank, it only had one and dumped over 80 pounds of crap out of the tank. Turns out 3 months later the yard driver stated he found a landscaper dumping grass and leaves in the fuel tank. Bought 5 more fuel filters and engine ran fine after flushing and remounting the tank. This trip you made with that coach reminded me of that trip. 400 Cummings with a 13 speed. The amount of blue smoke I laid down after I left the yard was bad enough traffic came to a halt due to the blue smoke behind me. It finally began to clear up after 3 miles down the road. If he can swing it I highly recommend you introduce him to a 6 speed Allison automatic transmission as he will be happier and you won't have to r and r the tranny because the way he's grinding you just might half to. Cheers!

I've done a coup[le of the 05 Eagles which were factory rebuilt and updated in 1979, and they had a steel tag welded to the frame, just above the rear bumper, and next to the vertical member on the curb side of the engine compartment. The other place I found a serial number (and rebuild date) was in the dash compartment, where the fire extinguisher was kept. For the fuiel problem, I would suggest changing the primary filter, likely full of jelly after sitting that long. As for the 10 speed, I installed one of those in my Flxible, and loved it. finally found the shift adapter could be flipped right to left, and the pattern was correct. Also found that shifting without using the clutch and matching RPM was much smoother. Stuff you learn when you're young and don't have vast finances!

I've enjoyed every minute of this video coz I was a bus driver a few years back. Just a little tips about gearchanging. How about not to follow each gear at low range, but ''jump'' from 1st to 3rd, than from 3rd to 5th. After you hit the High range, than you follow the steps from 6 to 7 to 8 to 9 and 10th. I used to drive a 10 speed Scania like this and it went smooth. Greeting from Penang, Malaysia.

I drove one back in the 90s with Greyhound Pioneer Australia. Built to last with all the stainless steel and the torsilastic suspension was amazing. Ran an Allison automatic which was a bit agricultural shifting. Also the arrangement of the auxiliary drive was a bit unusual. Still got classic looks that I would be proud to drive today. Protip: load up the gearshift before changing so it slips out of gear as soon as the load on the gearbox is released. The accelerator control makes for easier shifting than using the clutch to release the load

You guys are hard core and dedicated! Hope you got that bus cheap, it needs a complete rebuild to go over every part and bring it up to speed. Good video!

We still had a few 05 Eagle's when I drove for Colonial Trailways / Mobile, Ala. back in 1993. It was a 4-speed & with the loooong linkage, it DID require some finesse. Good to see one of the ole classic gals back on-the-road - many memories - Thanks Steve/W5BIB -Mobile, Ala.- (new Subscriber)

I drove Eagles back in the 70s charter bus by I drove 18-wheelers before that guy took me out on a road test he was amazed I got in fourth gear that easy lol takes forever for their RPM to drop down that much you get used to it though no grinding lol RIGHT 😄

@@46lfries Same here Larry,... I'd driven OTR Reefer for years when I went to Trailways. The old 4sp Eagle was just about like driving those old 5sp Macks !!! ya sure couldn't get in a hurry with the shifting !!! (good ol' days...)

I drove commercially for several years...if you lower the seat so your legs are not resting on the front edge it is less fatiguing. you are also closer to the road and feel tossing or swaying less. An old driver taught me this when I started and it really helps on long hauls. We used to run Florida spring break trips straight through out of Canada and northern US.

So nice to see another Silver Eagle 01 brought back to life! I own the very last 01 built and enjoy others that own one and also work on them. I've done everything to mine from the exterior, interior and all of my own mechanical work.

Here is a shitty part of the story that we didn’t tell. I’ve been Vegan for almost 2 years. I was so tired and hungry and the sellers wife made bbq for everyone. It was several miles to town to try and find me food so i threw caution to the wind and just ate the damn bbq. I figure it would have shifty results with my insides and i was correct. Colon flush brought to you by North Carolina bbq

Keep us up-to-date on where you're headed. there's a lot of your fans out here that would be glad to come out and lend a hand or support with local knowledge. I'm in Virginia near Lynchburg. You can stop here anytime you want I have a big yard plenty of space to park a bus and power.

Thanks for the trip down Memory Lane. I cut my teeth in Eagles; 05s with 10 caps and 4 speeds; 10s with 7 speeds; and a 15 auto. Music to my ears. I don't know what it is about Eagles, but I have always preferred their exhaust note to that of the MCIs and Prevost 2 strokes.
