Eagles - "The Last Resort" slideshow with lyrics on screen & in description. This song is really a history lesson. I've created this slideshow using images of beautiful American fine art, historic photographs and colorful high quality current scenic photographs.
"The Last Resort" is a song written by Don Henley and Glenn Frey. It was originally released on the Eagles' album Hotel California on December 8. 1976.[1] It was subsequently released as the B-side of "Life in the Fast Lane" single on May 3, 1977.
n a 1978 interview with Rolling Stone, Henley said: "'The Last Resort', on Hotel California, is still one of my favorite songs... That's because I care more about the environment than about writing songs about drugs or love affairs or excesses of any kind. The gist of the song was that when we find something good, we destroy it by our presence - by the very fact that man is the only animal on earth that is capable of destroying his environment. The environment is the reason I got into politics: to try to do something about what I saw as the complete destruction of most of the resources that we have left. We have mortgaged our future for gain and greed." (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)
The song reflects on the Westward Expansion in America, with the hardship, bloodshed, greed and destruction of natural resources and wildlife that came with the settling of the West. Americans felt it was their destiny to claim the land and own the frontier from the Atlantic to the Pacific oceans. California was the last frontier. Ironically, the song says, "We can leave it all behind and sail to Lahaina", which is a town on the Hawaiian Island of Maui. Don Henley wrote the lyrics, which tell the epic story employing sarcasm and criticism.
Lyrics for Eagles, "The Last Resort":
"The Last Resort"
She came from Providence,
the one in Rhode Island
Where the old world shadows hang
heavy in the air
She packed her hopes and dreams
like a refugee
Just as her father came across the sea
She heard about a place people were smilin'
They spoke about the red man's way,
and how they loved the land
And they came from everywhere
to the Great Divide
Seeking a place to stand
or a place to hide
Down in the crowded bars,
out for a good time,
Can't wait to tell you all,
what it's like up there
And they called it paradise
I don't know why
Somebody laid the mountains low
while the town got high
Then the chilly winds blew down
Across the desert
through the canyons of the coast, to
the Malibu
Where the pretty people play,
hungry for power
to light their neon way
and give them things to do
Some rich men came and raped the land,
Nobody caught 'em
Put up a bunch of ugly boxes, and Jesus,
people bought 'em
And they called it paradise
The place to be
They watched the hazy sun, sinking in the sea
You can leave it all behind
and sail to Lahaina
just like the missionaries did, so many years ago
They even brought a neon sign: "Jesus is coming"
Brought the white man's burden down
Brought the white man's reign
Who will provide the grand design?
What is yours and what is mine?
'Cause there is no more new frontier
We have got to make it here
We satisfy our endless needs and
justify our bloody deeds,
in the name of destiny and the name
of God
And you can see them there,
On Sunday morning
They stand up and sing about
what it's like up there
They call it paradise
I don't know why
You call someplace paradise,
kiss it goodbye

At 61 after seeing the Eagles numerous times I still get goosebumps! So much greed pushing a green agenda. So many government officials cashing in big time off of solar and wind but people still litter and electric vehicle components are made and mined in China with coal fired polluting energy. In Canada we have our own oil but instead of developing clean delivery and refining our present government increased shipments of Saudi oil in tankers across the ocean to be refined dirty or push across the border to Americans to refine. People need to get educated and start doing some research instead of following along. It’s just sad that today with environmental studies being taught there is still litter everywhere I go.

The most underrated song of the Eagles, but People knows little about the song. With collaboration with other member of the band, lead vocalist Don Henley expressed his inner heart about the plight of the American Indian, the original and rightful inhabitants of the American west and vast lands of America. The Eagles themselves are direct descendants of the Native American. Though not so popular single record of the Eagles, I find it one the most powerful song record they ever written as part of the record breaking Musical prowess. The song was made in Honor of those American Indian died fought so hard for land of their birth and their ancestor namely: Apache, Geronimo, Sitting Bull Black Elk, Black Hawk, Black Kettle, Blue Jacket, Billy Bowlegs, Joseph Brant, Buckongahelas, Lone Horn, Captain Jack, Mangas Coloradas, Cochise, Cornplanter, Cornstalk, Crazy Horse, Geronimo, Chief Joseph, Chief Logan, Lozen Neolin, Opchanacanough, Osceola, King Philip, Chief Pontiac, Rain-in-the-Face, Red Cloud, Red Jacket, Major Ridge, Sakayengwaraton, Shingas, Chief Seattle, Spotted Elk, Tamanend, Tecumseh, Tenskwatawa Touch the Clouds, Wovoka

@David Broadley There's always one gobshite asshole on most threads, and on this one it's you. Funny, I don't remember being personally responsible for the atrocities committed by white settlers, but if it suits your pathetic little twisted mind to hold me accountable then that's your problem. I shed tears for the Native Americans who were murdered and because the song is poignant and truthful. (you'd do well to check your English grammar)

From the Philippines, i love the song. Its impact is so deep, social, political and identity. I understand the soul of this song like the sufferings of our indigenous people here. The insatiable want of man, causes havoc to the rightful owner , and it seems people dont understand despite their indignation against violation of their human rights. Ah, the time of reckoning is coming yet, people insist that it is destiny that God granted them. But it is social injustice that man committed against the rightful owner! LRP
