Ealing was one of only three major pre-war studios in Britain to continue production throughout World War II. Michael Balcon's studio turned over virtually all its production - even comedies starring George Formby or Will Hay - to war stories, stressing ordinary heroism and the shared struggle across all communities, classes and regions. Thanks to this 'people's war' agenda, Ealing found itself in tune with the public mood.
In this revealing short film, historian Juliet Gardiner and BFI Senior Curator Mark Duguid take us back to wartime Britain. We explore Ealing's key themes, people and films, and uncover how the studio forged a distinctive style and identity which carried it through the war years and well beyond.

The ship portraying San Demetrio in the film was the San Cipriano. She was completing a refit on the Tyne. My Dad was Third Mate and it is him who rings the engine room telegraph. The film was made to raise morale and show the general population what the Merchant Navy was experiencing. Don't forget the Merchant Navy was a civilian manned service. Dad had already been sunk in two other ships before the film was made, first in the trooper Narkunda and the tanker Empire Norseman. He crossed the bar aged 91 in 2012.

My grandfather was a survivor of the San Demetrio when it was shelled by the German cruiser . I still have all his medals & paperwork including seamans books.

Interesting film but flawed on facts : San Demetrio was hit by a German pocket battleship , not a u-boat as the narrator says. And not all senior officers were absent - they had the chief engineer. Of course, on navigational questions they did rely on juniors; and the vote on which way to go was a classless question.

I love this film, There is vast B&W wartime movie collection on RU-vid. One thing I do wish is there are some films like San Demetria - London that you can only get bits and pieces of. You can’t get it complete from start to finish.

Interesting look at the evolution of propaganda and how the technologies of persuasion were all for collectivism and social solidarity, not anymore of course and in Britain not since at least the early 1970s. Another world perhaps, but one no less shaped by the media than the one we currently inhabit today. Interesting clip thanks BFI.
