Although it sounds like torture to me, I can see it being useful to players that are hired to play other people's music. But... I'm curious as to how many composers of the standards catalog actually went thru ear training (or could pull it off). I would think that most of them were probably focused on creating art instead of training to be able to name the chords/notes by ear in someone else's composition. That being said, I'll be the first to tell you that I have no idea what I'm doing! :)

You would sure need it for certain styles of Jazz. For Exemplar "Time - no changes" Miles Davis "The sorcerer".

On gigs this skill helps a lot. So you can say it’s stupid but move to the states and play some gigs and without this skill you won’t be getting called for very long

I have actually played many gigs in the US and never needed this.

Eh fair enough. I live and play in NYC and make a living playing jazz and it’s come in handy to me many many times. That being said it’s useful to who it’s useful to

@@wolfchapz7669 I spent 7 years playing in tourist bar with a guy who used a huge collection of pop and jazz backing tracks. He wouldn’t even give me a key. After a while I could just find the key, feel and predict the changes. Occasionally traumatic but great training and like you has come in handy many times since.

Learning a tune by ear is way faster than being told the chords and doesn't require somebody writing it down, as long as you've learned how to do it correctly. Sounds like you weren't taught very well though, as teaching ear training should be way more structured than what you described.
