Great video and it is making me think about my set up I am about to install, LG C9 and denon avr-x3600h. I was considering the eARC option. As the denon does not support HDMI 2.1, connecting a PS5 to the denon I guess does not make sense. Based on this video I could connect it to the LG (as it has HDMI 2.1) and use the eARC back to the denon. Does it matter that the Denon is not HDMI 2.1? Do I loose anything with this set-up? I would still have most other sources connected directly to the amp i.e. Sat...

We have an older Denon Receiver (AVR2113CI), and are using only for sound (everything is connected to the TV). If we set the TV to eARC (which we have) will it work if the receiver doesn't say eARC? We are using a high speed HDMI cable. Do we need to get a cable that has ethernet? I was a little confused there.

For this setup to work, is it mandatory that the AVR/soundbar also have a EARC port? Or will this work with TV (EARC) and Sound System (ARC) combination as well?

I just got my 2019 OLED and a new Denon AVR, and ran into this same issue. I haven't confirmed all sound settings/encodings work yet, but I finally realized I needed to change the settings on both the TV and DVR. Ah man, thanks so much for this video! I've been putting off buying a 4K TV for years because it just seemed wrong that it meant replacing my 10+ years-old but perfectly fine Denon AVR-3808ci receiver. I consulted the "experts" from Best Buy, PC Richards, and a local Home AV to give advice on exactly this subject, and they just said I'd have to buy a new AVR from them. When I told them I wanted them to first try hooking up all my devices to the TV and then send the audio to the AVR, the look they gave me said it all. So I never hired any of them, and decided I'd just have trudge through it on my own. Just yesterday I finally ordered an 2019 LG C9 from Amazon (I decided against the newer 2020 CX model because of the DTS downgrade, and also because they couldn't guarantee delivery for at least 3 weeks, ha) So when it arrives, I'll be following your advice step-by-step! 👣

Hi dowmck! I had that same AVR!! I sold it in 2016. I am pretty sure it doesn’t support ARC. You should be able to pipe the audio from the TV via Optical to the AVR.

Techno Dad, I am currently facing some issues with my Denon AVR X3500H with ARC. Whenever I switch to TV audio it works fine. But then when I switch to HDMI, i directly goes to cabl/sat and it takes a couple of presses to switch the audio and video to say for eg bluray. Any reason why that happens? Is there a way it can go directly to bluray rather than default to cabl/sat

Great insights. I've connected my LG OLED to my NAD T757 AVR. Though the ARC works, I notice that the sound output is lower than, lets say, a regular RCA analog input. Is this normal? Have to crank up the volume to near -30 dB for decent sound levels. It's the same 'low' output level with optical as well. What could be the reason?

Need a little bit of help....my Samsung Q60T Soundbar is connected to my Samsung Q60R TV HDMI ARC > HDMI ARC and I'm able to get Dolby Digital through the tv but it switches by itself to PCM when I use my google chromecast. When I use my Xbox Series X it works with Dolby Digital but there is an audio delay (half second). Here's the weird thing...this whole time on my tv settings it would say AV Samsung Q60T Soundbar but last night it said Receiver (HDMI) and all my sources worked with Dolby Digital with NO audio sync issues. Now I can't get back to that working. Am I doing something wrong? Thanks!

@gibbonlaunch1516
@gibbonlaunch1516 4 года назад
In respect to Earc: Is this working for all hdmi ports of the LGC9? As only 1 port (hdmi2) is explicitly defined as having just normal arc? Let’s say you use the hdmi2 port as input to the receiver and a new console (ps5 or xbox series x) directly on another hdmi port to exclusively send the audio to the receiver. This will work without any issue?

Great tip of using the TV as the hub via eARC to avoid upgrading the AV Processor with each technology change. Likewise I’ve done something similar but in my case upgrade is now needed - good to know that I can focus on eARC support as a main criteria.
@TechnoDad
@TechnoDad 4 года назад
Yup! It's kind of a game changer as we can keep our AVRs just a "little bit" longer when tech changes. Like, I can upgrade my TV and not be 'required' to upgrade my AVR.

What if I don’t have anything but the LG tv and the Receiver? I’m just using the apps(Netflix,Disney,appletv) on the tv. My issue has been if I hit info on my receiver I only see DD+, UNKNOWN and unknown again but it lower case letters. I know my receiver has Dolby Atmos and Vision. Also I only have 5.1 setup. Do I actually need to use extra speakers in the height audio ports on the back of the receiver for it to show up or can i still get Dolby atmos using 5.1 setup?

I'm a bit confused so if you could clarify please... I have an LG C9 65" OLED and Denon AVR-X6400H. When I connect my Oppo Bluray player to my HDMI in port on the C9, it passes the audio from my Atmos bluray disc as TrueHD (on the Denon) and when I run the Netflix app for a Atmos enabled movie, the Denon displays Dolby Digital +. Are you saying this is normal and it won't ever show Atmos on the Denon? I get Atmos showing on the Denon when I play the same movie on my Apple TV 4K. This is where I'm confused. Also, the Denon VR app also shows Dolby Digital + for the input and the output too, never Atmos. I hope you see this and can send reply. cheers.

Using ARC or eARC - is it normal to experience audio delay issues when sending Bitstream audio from a console (console to TV HDMI and TV arc to Soundbar arc)? I find both the DTS and Dolby settings cause these delays on a compatible soundbar (a 3.1 that can decode both). Bypass audio is set on the TV itself and no sync adjustments make it any better. Is this normal? Any suggestions?

So I have an interesting one Techno dad. If I leave eArc on then my TV defaults back to internal speakers whenever I take it out of standby. Now, I am using the new Marantz 7015 with the LG 65 inch GX. I found a solution and that was to turn off eArc on the TV, while leaving all the other settings the same (bitstream etc). HDMI control and Arc is enabled on the Marantz. Even by turning off the TV's eArc I get Atmos showing up on the Marantz and I can stream the higher bandwidth codecs. I am confused as to why this is working? what is the point of the eArc on the TV if it works regardless of being on or off? I am sure I have missed something here...

the lg 2020 tv only has the Earc text over 1 hdmi 2.1 port so how does that work if u want to passthrough lossless audio from i.e ps5 to my avr? Since im thinking of connecting the ps5 to the tv and then the earc port goes to the avr but wont it then be lossy audio since the ps5 is in a non Earc port? How does that work? Can the tv receive lossless audio from a non earc port as long as its 2.1 hdmi and then send the audio to the earc port which then goes to the avr? same question if i have a nvidia shield pro, can i connect it to the tv or must it be connected to the avr to get lossless audio?

Does yr tv have an hdmi labeled ARC ?.. take a look at the hdmi connectors on yr tv and see..it will say HDMI - ARC if it has. If Your TV doesn't have to Arc or eArc.. just put your source content ..blu ray, netflix ...what ever into your reciever then send the video to the tv via hdmi 2.0 Cable wise hdmi 2.1 48Gb/s is only needed if yr 4k gaming at 120hz / fps..hdmi 2.0 18Gb/s for lossy Atmos plus is pleanty... And I think it's ok also for the non lossy Dolby HD Atmos content ud get from Blu-ray only... But if you're worried just buy a 2.1 cable... Then your future proofed.. and they ain't that much money.

The problem is that i can not passthrough PCM 5.1, 7,1 audio from pc ( GTX 1080 TI ) from the tv to soundbar , I can only choose DOlby atmos from the windows sound menu , when connecting the pc to soundbar directly i get pcm option in the windows without any problems , if i use 2 cables from the pc to the tv and sound bar to bypass earc i get sound sync problem , if I use the soundbar own hdmi port to passthrough image to tv i lose 120 hz capability , i have bitstream and passthrough on TV settings in hdmi options , i tried different types of cables with no use , i really appreciate your help .

Sorry if it’s been asked, but does the LG OLED C9 have an update for hdcp 2.3 and will that be a factor for the new PS5 and XBOX systems?

Question... I have a 5.1 surround set up. In the Q90T qled tv sound options where you can choose between pcm, auto or pass-through I have it set to auto. When I play a dolby atmos movie it shows exactly that on the receiver but as I said I'm not set up for atmos (I'm doing 5.1) if I put the option to pass-through instead the receiver shows the sound now coming out in Dolby true Hd. I'm curious what you guys with a 5.1 surround sound have your tv sound option set at? Would it be better on pass through to get Dolby true hd? Or leave it on auto and get dolby atmos even though I have no ceiling speakers...it sounds like it should be pass-through?
@TechnoDad
@TechnoDad 4 года назад
Dan. Dolby Atmos is based off of Dolby TrueHD. So that makes perfect sense to me that if you have an Atmos signal going to an AVR that is only setup for 5.1, you should see it display Dolby TrueHD. That's what happens to me when I turn off my height channels. Pass-through is the better way to go.

I have a Lg c9 , Samsung HW q-950t soundbar and a 2013 Sony 3d BLU-Ray Player BDP-S490 . I connected blu-ray player straight to TV and then used earc to pass audio . I put earc to on and selected passthrough in digital output option. Now when i play a blu-ray , the centre channel seems to not work properly or i think does not work at all. The info button on lg app says PCM . However when i select Auto instead of passthrough in the sound settings ,the centre seems to work fine. With passthrough selected in LG sound earc settings , i believe Blu-ray player does not decode audio and passes straight to soundbar , but the soundbar's centre channel mutes doing so . I think this seems to some PCM issue on the soundbar . However selecting to auto instad of passthrough , get's the centre channel working. Any thoughts or suggestion , why this is happening.

Why do i need to set mine to auto instead of passthrough to get it to work? Its weird because when I set it to pcm, the receiver gets pcm, but when i put it on pass through i get no audio. Then i put it on auto and my yamaha shows Atmos/pcm.

Hi there. Can I buy a last gen AV like the Marantz 7013 and hook up an X series X into the HDMI 2.1 port on the TV, then run a HDMI from the other eARC HDMI on the TV back to the Marantz receiver? This would be instead of running the Xbox through the amp to the TV. Would that work? Thanks!

Happy new year and big thx for your videos... I have questions regarding digital sound out on LG TV. You said that Auto is for ARC and pass through is for eARC. I've a budget LG tv (UN7300) with a standard HDMI ARC but I've have both options (auto/pass through) 1/ what's the point of having pass through option since my tv don't support eARC? 2/ what's the difference between both options (I mean what auto really do and what pass through do)? 3/ I have the JBL Bar 5.1 (with real surround speakers which support PCM/LPCM, AC3 and DTS) I know that my tv don't support DTS as all LG TVs of 2020 and ARC pass through don't support LPCM so the only option I've is Dolby digital and am wondering if auto is the right choice rather than using passthrough!? PS: I can detect a difference between both options; when auto is selected surround speakers are a bit louder when pass through is selected the front speakers (from soundbar) are a bit louder and surround speakers are less louder. Plz help auto or passthrough which is the most accurate in my case and what's the difference between both.

If I plug all my components into the tv and then run earc to the receiver will the stereo turn on automatically when I turn the tv on? Techno dad I have my LG OLED set up with E-ARC 2.1 cable into my Denon X4700H into the E-arc port and I have my audio set to Arc on pass through. When I play Tidal app from LG it recognizes the Dolby atmos only through the internal tv audio and not through the Denon. I also tried playing direct from tidal app on iPhone and it will stream to Denon via Airplay but when checking the “AVR info” on Denon smart phone app remote it lists “pcm” and only shows for input that my SFL and SFR are active. I’m going manic over this lol, do I need a different streaming device or will HEOS sync up the Atmos? I’m struggling hard and really appreciate your help.

I just ordered a Sony X900h, it has eARC, my AVR only has ARC. Can I only send audio over hdmi, to the receiver to still get Dolby Atmos from a 4k player? 4k Player/PS5 > TV > AVR [ Dolby Atmos ] I'm plan to go this route, seeing that the AVR doesn't have any HDMI 2.1 ports.

ONE2THR Yes, I am in the same boat as you at the moment. I just had my Sony X900H (85” baby) delivered two days ago. My Onkyo TX-SR353 only supports ARC. I connected an HDMI cable from HDMI 3 (ARC) to my receiver’s output / ARC HDMI port. I then had to enable ARC on my receiver. It works, but I saw on another RU-vid channel that if you are doing Dolby Atmos or anything above 5.1 that the audio is not lossless, it is compressed. So I will update my receiver next year probably if there are more 2.1 HDMI channels than 1 that the Denon has now.
