The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

I've known of Earl Grant for almost 60 years as my father would play his eight track constantly driving around in Reno in 1967. He even saw him live at a casino then. I've seen him before and he was great, but this video is the thunderbolt that somehow escaped the American public. He's amazing. We should look back and and think he was one of the best.

Could it be that Earl may possibly have some amphetamines or perhaps cocaine enhancing his rapid-fire rhythm? Or is he just naturally at hyper-speed while adding the animated vocal whooping? Dude is going 110 mph without brakes that's for sure!

Alas, it's something no longer valued in popular music: technical virtuosity. From his Wikipedia page: "Though he would be known later for his keyboards and vocals, Grant also played trumpet and drums. Grant attended four music schools, eventually becoming a music teacher. " All that was before he hit it big in 1957.
