The Cretaceous saw the diversification of many Squamate groups, but none were more impressive than the Mosasaurs, which transitioned from terrestrial monitor lizard-like ancestors into fully marine, sometimes very large, apex predators.

Crazy to think that mosasaurs are related to snakes and lizards

So many extinct reptiles get inaccurately called lizards, yet Mosasaurs actually were just that.

I know like the Tyrannosaurus Rex! Tyrant Lizard King would be a more fitting name for mega varanid Megalania (varanis priscus). But then again we have a whale called the Emperor Lizard so...

Hey Dr. Polaris, why don't you think about making a suggestion and creating a RU-vid Videos that's all about the evolution of the and the history of the Prehistoric Marine Reptiles called the Ichthyosauria, such as Ichthyosauridae (Ichthyosaurs) in the next couple of weeks to think about that one coming up next?!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️👍👍👍👍👍

Hey Dr. Polaris, right after the evolution and the history of the Euornithine Avians and the Ornithurine Avians, why don't you get to think of a suggestion and creating a RU-vid Videos all about the about the evolution and the history of the Prehistoric Marine Reptiles called the Palaeophiidae (Palaeophis), the Extinct Marine Serpentes (Snakes) that are the relatives to the Extant File Snakes, such as Archaeophis, Palaeophis, and Pterosphenus, in the next couple of weeks to think about that one coming up next?!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️👍👍👍👍👍

8:37 That diver is probably rethinking a lot of life decisions right now. It's always been funny to me how mosasaurs are the one instance where calling something from the Age of Dinosaurs a giant lizard is actually a correct statement.

I grew up in Nebraska, which during the Cretaceous period, was submerged by the Niobrara Sea (in fact, the Niobrara River runs near my birthplace); Nebraska was lacking in proper dinosaur fossils, but we did indeed have mosasaurs (I recall seeing a display in Lincoln's Morrill Hall). Thanks, as always, Dr. Polaris!

I live in Croatia,where the aigialosaurids were found,so I'm really interested in the evolution of mosasaurs. I'm currently studying geology and paleontology in college,and I really hope to one day graduate and study aigialosaurids.

Some 100 million years ago, there was a small extinction event than, among other stuff, took out Ichthyosaurs and Pliosaurs, allow mosasaurs to quickly fill the niches of large marine predators.
@IanPendleton-gh6ox
@IanPendleton-gh6ox 7 месяцев назад
I know that event. That was the Cenomanian-Turonian Boundary Event, which occurred around 93.9 million years ago and resulted in significant faunal turnover across the planet. Ichthyosaurs and Spinosaurid dinosaurs were apparently completely wiped out because of it, while Carcharodontosaurid theropods, Rebbachisaurid sauropods, Anhanguerid pterosaurs, and Pliosaurids all held out for another few million years, but in greatly decreased diversity, with their very last members dying out around 89 million years ago.

Mosasaurus and Mosasaurs are one of the few prehistoric reptile groups where the “saurus/saur” in the name make perfect sense.

Can the future descendants of modern extant lizards and monitors evolve to be similar to the Mosasuars? It's sad that there's only a few marine reptile species today.

Seems unlikely as they'd be competing with whales, in particular orcas, unless something were to happen to remove them from the picture

When you think about it, mosasaurs were the true "terrible lizards". Probably the only time in history when lizards ruled the world via the oceans.

Never did understand why the varanids never reradiated to the sea after the KT extinction event. Certainly there was a niche.

true, especially when one considers that many monitor lizards are at home in the water both fresh and salt water. komodo dragons can dive upto 10 feet to hunt for fish and have crossed islands by swimming across. they could have.

That study reinstating Tetrapodophis as a 'snake' in 2023 (4:05) must have been Zaher et al's paper on Sanajeh. They are still using a bad, old data matrix, so I wouldn't worry about it.

If you do a video about snake evolution (and please do!) it would be awesome if you would consider a collab with Clint's Reptiles, he does great content about snakes and other reptiles, not only their care and behavior, but also their phylogeny and fossil record and such.

Could you do a video on thalattosaurs and their possible phylogenetic closeness to ichtyosaurs? They were pretty significant competitors to early sauropterygians during the early and middle triassic, yet they seem to be very overlooked.

Looking at birdosaurs brings up a pre-occupation I've had since my first properly scientific encyclopedia of animals explained the taxonomic tree (as it was known in the early 70s). In which order is the world's next order gestating? Are cephalopods on the cusp of evolving beyond Mollusca or are bats going to leave us terrestrial mammals in their dust?

I would rather have a straightforward, somewhat shorter vid chock full of info, rather than a fluffed and padded vid with sparse info. I like how condensed and factual his vids are regardless of the length. Go make your own vids if you don’t like his….
